PhD Applicants: Fall 2020

Recommended Posts

Just got my acceptance to UCI Public Health PhD. Had to decline as I already accepted funding to another school. Anyone else have a crazy time with funding? Was told last week by the school I am attending that they were pulling all financial aid if I didn't sign that day due to coronavirus so I had to commit on the spot. Crazy times.

Congratulations! Also, are universities allowed to put you on the spot like that? Lol

That is crazy! Did you ask them if you could ask for an extension due to Covid-19? I feel like most places should be accommodating. If you don't mind me asking, where did you accept over UCI?

Hi there! I’m going to be starting my masters in epidemiology and I’m interested in pursuing a PhD afterwards, what is the difference between a PhD and drph? Also when should I start looking for supervisors?
thanks in advance!

The main difference is that PhD is more research driven and DrPH is for current professionals and more field orientated. DrPH usually has prerequisites for a certain number of years of professional experiences. Good luck!

Hi, all -

I'm considering applying to epi phd programs for fall 2021 and am curious on what those who have already gone through the application process think about my chances at admission.

Undergrad institution: top liberal arts college
Undergrad GPA: 3.01/4.0
Undergraduate major(s): Mathematics, Hispanic Studies
Graduate institution: Large state school
Graduate GPA: 3.8/4.0
Graduate degree: MS Biomathematics
Research experience: 2 semesters undergraduate research assistant, MS thesis independent research, 4 years as research specialist at prestigious ecology research institute, working on a project at the intersection of disease ecology and public health
Publications: 2 first author, 3 3rd - 5th author
LOR: I assume will be strong. My MS advisor always indicated that he wished the university had PhD programs so he could keep me there, and I believe my current supervisor has been impressed with my performance.
GRE: 166 (Q): 162 (V): 5.5 (AW)
Conferences: 1 conference presentation during MS
Volunteer: 1 summer volunteer at local state college to write Python code to assist in ecology research
Other: 1 semester study abroad experience
Demographics: First generation, domestic, female

Other info: I have very focused research interests related to my work experience as a research specialists and my publications. I also have selected institutions where there is strong overlap between my interests and faculty research. I'm very motivated, but concerned about my fairly low undergraduate GPA. I, essentially, was not in the right major. I'm much more interested in applied math, however, all of my undergrad math courses were theoretical proof based classes.

Do you think I have a shot at Phd admissions?

Thank you for the feedback!!

Hello,

Anyone accepted to the University of Texas Health Science Center Houston PhD Epidemiology program for Fall 2020 yet? If yes, how long it took from app submission to acceptance to this program? TIA for response.
