Maryland Acceptance

Recommended Posts

To those on the wait list and going to the visit weekend--have you gotten any details about the plan for the day? I emailed Dr. Ray but haven't heard back yet, so naturally I'm assuming my delay in accepting the invitation means I'm no longer on the wait list. (It's crazy what this process will do to your ability for rational thinking!)

haha don't worry. I responded to the email on Tuesday and haven't heard back yet either. :)

I replied, and she said that she'd send the itinerary soon. I haven't received it yet, but I'm sure they'll send it in good time. They are probably still ironing out the details of the schedule. While it's awesome that they are coordinating the visit day with their graduate conference, I'm sure it's a scheduling nightmare. Don't panic--they will send out the info when it's finalized (honestly, I wouldn't even bug them about it unless we get into the first few days of March without word). I look forward to meeting you guys, and I know of some good places to hit in DC if y'all want to take a Metro ride (I know of an awesome sushi place a block away from the Folger library).

it will be fun to meet everyone. I'll probably arrive a day early to get some hangtime in with my DC friends so I don't have to worry about possibly missing anything on Friday or Saturday. I actually lived in DC for a month while I was a trainer at a restaurant, so it will be quite bizarre returning with the possibility of living there again (I've visited since then).

Thanks for easing my (ridiculous) worries! I'll be staying in DC with friends as well, so it promises to be a fun, if insanely busy, weekend.

Dr. Ray told me (and I may not have this all completely right) that we would all get together and have lunch Friday somewhere, then some kind of poetry reading and seeing the campus, and then dinner. Next day is obviously the conference.

I'm going in on thursday too... this way if I have some sort of traveling catastrophe it will not affect friday plans...

Any word from Dr. Ray about when MA applicants will be notified?

I haven't heard anything. I didn't even realize they were taking MA students again. Was last year just a one-year moratorium? From what I've seen on the web-site/heard from a friend in the MLIS program, UMD is overhauling the MA program to make it an MAPhD (like Vanderbilt's program is structured).

Has anyone on the wait list received information about next weekend? It's been a week since I emailed, and I haven't gotten a response. I don't want to be that annoying applicant, but I also need to make travel plans--I know there are things happening on Friday, but since I live in driving distance, I'd like to know more so I can decide which day to arrive. I thought it would see if I was the only one still waiting for an itinerary before I contacted the department, since it's possible they're still organizing things. (It's also possible I'm over-thinking, because I am an obsessive planner and an obsessive emailer.) If I haven't heard anything by the end of tomorrow, I'm going to have to contact them, but if somehow my email was missed when everyone else was contacted, I'd like to go ahead and email them as soon as possible.

Neurotic? Completely. But I'd like to blame this whole application process for that.

I'm still waiting to hear as well. I did sent Dr. Ray a quick email on Monday just to let her know I would be attending for sure, as I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to when I first replied. I hope we get the details soon!

I haven't heard anything yet. I was going to give it until Monday or Tuesday before e-mailing. I'm also driving down (I'm about 6 hours north, in western NY state). The important info for me is what time things are happening on Friday. I'd prefer not to miss my Thursday night Shakespeare seminar (since I'm already going to miss it two weeks later for the CEA conference), but even if I leave right after class, I wouldn't get to MD until 4am. If there are events planned in the morning/early afternoon on Friday, I doubt I would give a good impression on no sleep.

I'm in a similar position as you. I'd like to be at my best, and most lucid, Friday, but I'm also planning to stay with friends who have 8-5 jobs, and don't want to impose more than I need to. At least I'm learning some patience! If no one posts any updates by Friday, I'm going to email, and I'll let y'all know the result.

Had an email when I woke up to check my asf for decision. Rejected...as I knew was coming. Maybe they updated all asf???

I just received an e-mail from Dr. Ray with a pdf of the itinerary. I'm assuming everyone else got it as well.

I also received it. Looks like a busy schedule, but I'm looking forward to it. I'm assuming we're meeting on Friday in the English department building?

Is anyone aware of Maryland's history of accepting PhDs. to the MA program? I checked the results board and didn't see any soft of confirming info one way or the other.

that's what I'm assuming as well - I was just going to find the main English office and ask where to meet.

How formal is everyone dressing for this weekend? Since I'm wait listed and not formally admitted, I don't want to be too casual, but I don't want to be the overly formal rube, either (plus, depending on how quickly this coming storm develops, it might pour down rain on Friday).

I think you can never go wrong with business casual (khakis, Oxford-type button down, or sweater and dressy shoes). I'd avoid jeans, personally.

The variety of outfits I'm packing is somewhat ridiculous, but I'm dressing as I would for a conference: dress or skirt and tights, flats, nothing too "business-y" (so cardigans instead of button-ups). I tend to err on the side of dressier in my daily life, however, so this is what I'm most confortable wearing. I definitely wouldn't go to the suit extreme, but I'm also not going to be in jeans or casual tops, either.

i'm wearing a dress + cardigan one day, skirt + tshirt & scarf + cardigan the other day. they're both everyday outfits for me though, so they're definitely not overly formal or anything.

Hm. I'm a grown man with a lineman's build. I don't think I could pull off that look (though I'm sure it would make an impression on the adcomm!)

hahaha. it's true that knowing what I'll be wearing won't help you. I wonder what they'll think of my tattoos - trying to minimize how many show, but two pretty much just show all the time.

If the intent is to stand out, you definitely would (although I don't know if they sell tights for lineman builds!). I think guys can never go wrong in khakis and a more casual button up, and I kind of envy the ease of that as a fallback outfit for all occasions.
