hopefulwoolfian 7
I haven't heard anything. I didn't even realize they were taking MA students again. Was last year just a one-year moratorium? From what I've seen on the web-site/heard from a friend in the MLIS program, UMD is overhauling the MA program to make it an MAPhD (like Vanderbilt's program is structured). I just got accepted to the MA program! But it came through the automated system and I've heard nothing from the department. I'll be calling tomorrow, but I'm assuming that probably means the terminal MA without funding rather than the MA/PhD, given that I've heard nothing from the department and wasn't invited to the visiting weekend. Anyone get something similar or have any information about Maryland's MA?

Finding an acceptance buried beneath a bunch of links was certainly a new experience. I think the expression on my face went from expected disappointment to pleasant surprise to dampened enthusiasm. Still nice, though

Nice to be accepted, but knowing I'm not going because it's unfunded makes me kind of sad. -sigh-
Tybalt 174
Just got back from the UMD visit weekend. I'm completely in love with this program and the campus. It was a little awkward being there as a wait-lister (particularly since I got a chance to hang out with the admitted folks in my sub-field--I don't WANT them to go somewhere else. They were cool as hell. I want to go to the program with them. It was a strange dynamic). The English building was absolutely beautiful, and just about every professor I spoke with was unbelievably intelligent and friendly (the DGS really sets the tone, and she's extremely upbeat and pleasant). The current grad students were really cool as well, and they put on a very nice graduate conference today. They had a nice selection of papers, and a fantastic keynote speaker (even if the speaker had a problem or two with the technology). I'm really hoping that there was a 3rd Renaissance scholar who didn't attend the weekend due to having acceptances from Harvard, Princeton and James Franco Universities, as I would love to get in off the waitlist while still getting a chance to work with the folks I met this weekend. augustquail 13
Congratulations! I know you must be ecstatic; it's such a great place, and I'm more than a little jealous! Yes--ecstatic is just the word! I had really given up hope, and I didn't have any other offers (just another waitlist). That was the best phone call ever! jtractatus 0
WOWOWOW!! HUGE CONGRATS!! Congratulations on getting in, August. If there are any other waitlisters biting their nails on this, I was notified by Sangeeta today that the final slot was offered to me--HOWEVER, I had already declared somewhere else and informed him of this like ten minutes ago. Hopefully this great offer trickles down to one of the other waitlisters. The details were 4 years, health insurance, 18k-20k stipend, no teaching first year, then 2, then 3, then 2. Good luck everyone, James

Good luck everyone, James I hope it does, but I'm starting to lose hope on Maryland. I e-mailed Dr. Ray for an update on Tuesday, and have not yet heard back. She's been really good about returning previous e-mails (ie- within 6 or 7 hours). Plus, if you were offered the last spot, I think that means they've met their quota for early modernists (you're in post-modern lit, right?). Fingers still crossed and gut still clenched, but hope sadly dwindling.

Fingers still crossed and gut still clenched, but hope sadly dwindling. Yeah, you're right. I'm more just pretty much anything after 1950 plus a bunch of weird psychological/ disability studies things. But perhaps that doesn't mean anything. I'll pray for you! She--I feel bad I kept referring to her as a "he" (I'm an idiot)--was working from home today, so perhaps she didn't have time to reconvene with the adcomm to determine who would come next. I really don't know, but wish everyone the best. I hope we all just get in somewhere and never have to develop hypertension through this agonizing process again. J
lyonessrampant 457
Hey Tybalt! Don't give up hope! I think an early modern spot may yet open up at Maryland. I think one of the early modernists is leaning another direction. Best of luck!!!

I think one of the early modernists is leaning another direction. Best of luck!!! Hope is not totally gone, but it is dwindling. I still haven't heard anything (and I e-mailed Dr. Ray a week ago). That, plus the fact that she offered "the last spot" to a modernist has me a little more than worried. The fact that we're down to the last week and I have yet to hear from any of my three waitlists has me a bit freaked out (and on top of THAT stress, I defend my MA thesis on Thursday). This week is going to kill me!

Tybalt 174
Anyone else still waiting on Maryland can stop waiting. I got a response from Dr. Ray--their roster is full. She's sending out the e-mail to the rest of the wait list tomorrow.
hopefulwoolfian 7
Any modernists who might still be waiting on UMD- I got offered a surprise MA/PhD funded spot today (considering they told me I only got the unfunded MA, it was quite the shock), but I'm already committed to Tufts, so I'll be turning it down tomorrow. I hope it goes to a GCer!
