Hi All:

I am curious about the culture of on-campus graduate dorms and apartments at Yale. I would like to be able to socialize, study, and do some light cooking. I am considering applying to Helen Hadley Hall and HGS. Have any other GSAS students submitted their housing applications? Which dorm or apartment complex did you select and why?

Hi all! I have just recieved green lights to accept the offer form Yale! Quite Exited! I'll be there just for a year for the Environmental Management Master Program, so I am looking for a year housing. Based on posts I read I understand East Rock is the best place to look arround for a place. However, I wont be able to arrive unitl August. Can anyone indicate places to look for appartments from abroad?

Thanks!

I would also appreciate it if someone can answer Greenarg's question.

Hi all, going to Yale for my PhD in the fall. I'm currently thinking about accommodation -- I want to live off-campus in a shared house with other students and/or professionals (no grad dorm). I'm overseas but do know New Haven fairly well, so that's good. Any good ideas where to look for postings, besides craigslist and padmapper? Ideally, I would like to "join" a house, rather than starting a new one with other incoming students.

There was a communal household that recently advertised in Craigslist. Looks really nice. Lovely East Rock home with several rooms, shared cooking, cooperative gardens out back. http://newhaven.craigslist.org/apa/3715247402.html

I want to second the mention of the Yale Off-Campus Housing listings... this is a fantastic resource and it is how I found an amazing place in East Rock that had not been advertised elsewhere (my landlord wanted Yale graduate students as renters)!

In spite of having a couple New Haven friends visit apartments on my behalf, I have still had no luck finding an affordable 1BR apartment, 500 square feet or slightly larger, in Wooster Square, West Chapel district or East Rock that is fit to live in. My friend's wife thought the entrance to my initial top-choice apartment was too dark and dangerous (though in East Rock) due to its configuration, and the other two apartments I liked ended up having some serious structural issues; e.g., bad plumbing, water damage, etc. I didn't think apartment hunting would be this difficult, not even from afar.

What is everyone looking for? I could keep an eye out and post leads. Who is willing to share? I come across great apartments all time that would be perfectly affordable for a couple of students splitting the rent. I, myself, prefer to live alone; I have too much stuff and a daughter who will visit me during the summers.

My SO and I are looking for a 1-BR or large studio. Pet-friendly (two cats). Preferably as many utilities included as possible. Max. $1200 for the rent itself. Sq. footage: again, bigger is better. 450 and up, I suppose. Dwight, Downtown areas preferred. Basically as close to main campus as possible, really. We're in NYC so we are hoping to shortlist apartments and do a visit.

When are you looking to move? I'll PM you if I come across anything.

Swagato,

Have you visited Pike International's web site? They have a couple 1BR (500 sqft+) apartments at 25 Lynwood Place, which is close to everything and includes on-street, residential permit parking (only $20 dollars annually). Rent runs approximately $1195/mo and includes heat and hot water, and maybe even cooking gas.

That's a fantastic resource, thanks so much. To be honest, we've only barely begun looking since it's not even April 15th. I figure the real searching will get underway around the end of this month onward. Mainly, we've been browsing through the listings Yale's own off-campus service offers. I will definitely look into Pike Intn'l. Do please keep me posted should anything else come by you! I'd be happy to reciprocate, but it looks like you're not that interested in the downtown area..?

A forewarning, many August 1st apartments come available in April. Also, I've been searching since February, and have noticed rents increasing each month; what I could get for $950 in Feb. is now listed for upwards of $1100. Relative to other places, Elm Campus is expensive, and personally I didn't find any of their apartments aesthetically to my liking. But that's me and a purely subjective matter. Chelsea Co. (http://www.chelseaco.com/) has a good deal going on at 80 Howe street, but their 1 bedrooms were just too small for my needs (only 400 square feet). You might want to check them out as well, though. They may still have a few apartments left for August 1st. There was a nice one also available August 15th.

110 or 106 Dwight street is decent. Do a Craigslist search for those addresses and contact Everlena. It's a few blocks from Arts/Architecture part of campus, but a 20 minute walk from where I needed to be, so I passed that one up as well. Nice 1BR with studio available for $1065, including heat and hot water. On-street, residential parking is also available in that area on Dwight.

  • 2 weeks later...

We are visiting this Friday to see about a dozen places. Fortunately, several are located within the same buildings, so we won't be hopping all over the city. Definitely some good places to be had along Howe, Dwight, and Edgewood. Hopefully we will close something by mid-May or shortly afterward.

Whereabouts did you land yours? East Rock? I'm unfamiliar with socio, so I don't know if you'd be frequenting the science part of campus more or the central campus.

Also, if you don't mind, what's your deal like (rent+/- utilities, sq footage, etc.)?

Found a 575 square feet 1BR in East Rock on Whitney for $800/mo (I cover utilities). It's in a gorgeous early 20th century neocolonial home with off-street parking and a shuttle stop right out front. The rent, especially for the square footage, was better than anything I'd found previously. It's in excellent condition and just the right size for me. Thrilled.

Socio is on the 400 block of College, but workshops are held in a place off Prospect.

That's really good, based on what we've seen so far. $800+utils for 575 sqft is very impressive. Our hope is for a 2BR on Dwight that's going for $1100 (includes heat and hot water). We're unsure as to sqft, but will find out. The space seems a good deal given the asking price. Is your place managed privately, or by one of the real estate firms operating in the area?

It's managed privately by a nice couple who own several properties in the East Rock area. Is the 2BR you mention located at 110 Dwight Street or thereabouts?
