Accredited online sociology program for prereqs?

Recommended Posts

Hey folks, I was wondering if you could help me out here? Since I did not major in sociology during my undergrad, I'm obviously missing some classes from my repertoire. The university I plan to attend in the fall have asked me to take sociological theory before classes start in September. There are so many online programs that it's overwhelming to try to weed through which programs are legitimate and which ones are not, especially since I have never taken an online course before. I was wondering if any of you could recommend any online sociology programs? I only need to take sociological theory. Any help would be appreciated!

I went to a small state university in MA where I started to major in Soc., and a lot of the classes were offered online, in addition to in-class. I'm not sure if you'd still pay out of state tuition or not, since it's online, but I can tell you it's definitely an accredited, legitimate school and that I really enjoyed the Soc. classes there. You're welcome to PM me for more details, if you're interested.

I am considering it, but their theory course has prereqs as well and I'm not sure if I meet them (I'm calling on Monday to find out). I am hoping to find some backups just in case. Never hurts to play it safe.

Do you actually need it for the credit? or can you audit it?

What do you mean by audit it?

I don't need it for credit. I just need to prove that I've taken it before starting their program in the fall.

You ask the professor if you can "audit." Essentially you sit in the class, participate and do the assignments but you don't get a grade.

Ohhh. Yeah, I think I can do that.

I was an anthropology major, sociology minor. I fell in love with sociology a bit too late and didn't want to spend an extra year in undergrad to double major. Ah well.

Have they asked you to take a class, or asked you to just brush of on material? I have never heard of a program "asking you to take a class" of a subject before you even start, but I have heard of programs asking you to review and brush up a bit on things. Could you just listen to iTunes U. lectures online? I love them. Been listening to them all year long and honestly, they are probably the only real sociology courses I've actually done since I'm coming in from another discipline.

I teach theory, and it's not so difficult to pick up a good textbook and study it--I can recommend a few for you to choose from. If you are required to take a course in theory, I would recommend attending on site. After all, if you are going to spend the money on the course, you should just go ahead and have the whole enrolled experience.

The M.A. program that I got in asked me to take theory as well. It was going to be a huge deal, as I didn't meet the prereqs at my local university either. Luckily, a professor at my alma mater offered to teach an independent study for me and waive any prereqs I didn't meet. Now that I have a Ph.D. offer, I don't have to take the class at all. Maybe you could work out an independent study? Auditing is a really great idea as well.
