I like the Verbal Flashcards from Magoosh available for smart phones. I just use it whenever and where ever I want. I'm yet to take the GRE. So dont know how effective it is. But it did help me score a little better when I took practice test.

These free resources are awesome! Thanks for sharing them all here. This must be so timely. I badly need some sources right now since I'm still starting out. This thread is an extensive research. Due credit should be given to the authors too! I will read them starting today until I take the test. I hope I can pass in time! Crossing my fingers. I'm starting to get some butterflies in my stomach due to test anxiety.

I can point to two resources which just became available in 2014, which I've found useful:

  1. BenchPrep's FREE GRE Playbook (100+ pages in PDF format): https://benchprep.com/gre-ebook
  2. The 20 Most-Difficult GRE Practice Questions (also in PDF; they're pretty hard but you can see how the test-makers think): https://benchprep.com/hardest-gre-questions

Magoosh also has a lot of free eBooks.

The 20 most difficult GRE practice questions has either a mistake in the question or they came up with the wrong answer (no wonder so many people messed up!) in Question 11. That really irks me. It's still useful, but know that the correct answer that you're supposed to get with what they give you is counted as wrong.

I got the most bang for my buck (i.e. NO bucks) from http://www.greenlighttestprep.com. It's all video lessons and practice questions, with an awesome study guide. The quality of instruction is higher than anything else I found.

I'm a math guy, so I needed help with the verbal stuff. I focussed on the free analytical writing materials here: http://greenlighttestprep.com/module/gre-analytical-writing then expanded to RC, TC and SE.

I watched all of the free videos (there are many, in every module), and eventually paid the full price for the verbal modules when they had a sale.

Math is my Kryptonite.  :( That said, I'm - FINALLY - making headway with the guys at Greenlight. I started with the quantitative comparison section, all of which are free video lessons: http://greenlighttestprep.com/module/gre-quantitative-comparison For a hundred bucks (on a sale) I bought all of the rest of the math sections (stats, probability, geometry, etc.).

I am also making positive use of the Greenlight website resource for my study improvement. It is embarrased to say that I did understand the analytical writing assessment video lessons to be free (!!!) but they are free http://greenlighttestprep.com/module/gre-analytical-writing I purchased the math and verbal package, and I am happy.

Sincerely,

JP

The ETS published two books( practice question books), I have taken a cursory look at the quant book:one thing I have noticed is that some of the questions are a little tasking and different than questions on Manhattan and older Ets materials

For folks that have taken the test recently, how different was the quant from the powerprep? or is the quant getting more complex? thanks

VOCABULARY help... Very funny (and helpful) series of cartoons called "Extreme Words" at this Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Greenlight-Test-Prep/423643471046484

Obviously you have to have a FB account to be able to see it. But who doesn't?  :)

There is discussion on Magoosh over whether Quant has gotten harder.  A lot of posters say it has (on Magoosh) and Magoosh points to a recent (August 2014) publication from ETS of a new Quant prep book that, according to Magoosh, has practice problems that are harder than what ETS has previously published. Magoosh also speculates that a change in Quant has come about because too many people are scoring high and that if they want the test to remain relevant more people need to score lower (look here on gradcafe, we have film, english, and history majors who claim to have scored 170 on Quant).  There is also speculation that ETS is trying to position the GRE to take over the GMAT, at least with some schools.  For those who are not aware, the GMAT is tougher than the GRE; so if schools want to buy into the GRE ETS needs to up their game with Quant.

I took the GRE in 2011 (like two weeks after they changed to the new format), 2013, and a few months ago.  The math seemed harder the last time but my scores were the same when compared to 2013.  My highest Quant score was from 2011, and that was with zero study/prep.

Thanks a lot. I am taking the test in 3 weeks

This recommendation comes under the heading of "almost free": I see today that Greenlight Test Prep has dropped their fee from a hundred bucks to $30.

http://greenlighttestprep.com/prices

I paid the full price a few months ago, but I don't feel ripped off. I got more than 500 videos on math and verbal. Big deal.

Black Friday sale? Looks like they just dropped the price hugely to capture the market. Fair enough.

I also found the free Magoosh GRE Vocabulary phone app to be hugely helpful for studying for the verbal section (my score was 166/96th percentile). It's very convenient to use on lunch breaks or at the checkout line. I had a good vocabulary going in, but I found that memorizing exact dictionary definitions with the app helped me breeze confidently through the verbal section.

Recently, I found a new site,  gre170.com   that is offering one free simulation for trial and a package with 10 full lenght simulations. Also all the above are very good practice materials.

Hiii guys,

thanks to you all for the amazing resources. I have a question about GRE prep : is it better to finish one task like Math for ex. and then move to the next one or do them simultaneously ?

Hi Guys,

I would like to also post our website. It is for GRE vocabulary. It will ask questions based on how familiar you are with the word. It will ask questions in many different form including listening, filling in sentences, matching pairs. As you get more and more familiar, it will ask more challenging questions.

Now supports many different languages. So if you want to study GRE verbal part in your own language please have a look.

http://www.fatlingo.com/

For example, if you speak Chinese and you want to study vocabulary then visit the following link.

http://www.fatlingo.com/overview.php?lang=chi&set_id=0

And press take a quiz button!

It will immediately start the quiz. Hope this helps your study!!

And for Decaf, from my personal experience, I liked studying one thing in specific time of the day.

Thanks!
