Don't ever, even partially, base your educational decision on a man. No matter how long you've been with them. It's not a good idea. I'm super happy to be here, in this city, and to be going to this particular school, but I'm still annoyed at myself for letting him play a part in my decision making process. He's such a douche. Even thinking about him makes me mad.

I left the leasing office after dropping off my keys. I was in such a hurry to leave that fucking room and distance myself from those witches, that I forgot about the letter that my dad had addressed to me, which I had taken from the mail box with me, and put it on the table in her office. 10 minutes later, I realized what I had forgotten and went back for it, but the envelope was gone. I'm pretty sure she threw it in the shredder because she hated my guts, and later telling me that she hadn't seen it, and that even though it was only 10 minutes, someone probably picked it up by accident. I was on my motorcycle, so I know I didn't have it in my hand when I left.

fun facts about this god forsaken apartment complex, which happens to have been an even bigger pain in the ass than my previous apartment, which had a small drug ring, convicts, people living on welfare, various maintenance issues that the landlord refused to acknowledge (you get the idea). but this one, despite looking like a higher up neighborhood ...

  1. had a neanderthal downstairs neighbor constantly punching on his ceiling because I walked around and made the floor creak. not only that, but reported me for noise violation, while the leasing manager took his side, telling me he has a longer contract with the apartment than I do. (I peed in his cactus pot on the patio before I left)
  2. got my tires slashed by some bitch for parking in a reserved spot overnight. then it got towed by the leasing manager. no foul play was intended by me, but this really pissed me off.
  3. no maintenance work orders are ever met with any kind of response.
  4. I hate to go on an endless drivel, but basically, the leasing managers are two faced bitches. except for one, who I think isn't a bad person, but I feel sorry for her for having to deal with them and follow asinine orders in order to keep her job.

moral of the story, Do your due diligence and see the shades beneath the facade.

OR

rent from sensible people, like a house or something, and do away with any 100 page contract with fine prints and legal bullshit.

I came here to reiterate my annoyance with some visiting students...esp. when they are not occupied enough in lab, and thus hover over me and ask questions constantly about what I'm doing. I'm glad you're curious, but I've got shit to do! We are, apparently, running a "demonstration lab."

My credit card got stolen the week before I have to move into my new apartment, set up utilities, and buy new appliances. On top of that, one of my pets is about to pass away and I will have more vet bills from the other pets having unexpected mites. Hopefully, I get my new card within the next week, because I don't get my fellowship for another 3 weeks, and I don't know how much all of this is going to cost me.

Unless you are a full grown adult and have been with the same person for years....

...otherwise those in their early 20s do not understand the mistake they are about to make.  Yeah, puppy love is awesome.

THE WORST. I'm happy to demonstrate once, even twice, but if you're still not getting it, do some independent research and come back when you can contribute something (labor, ideas, analysis). This ain't a frickin' charity.

Edit: Also, take some goddamn notes! And not on your cell phone. Pen and paper in the lab, buster.

uh.. I feel like 8 years is like a length of time that's way more than enough for people to decide to stay together/get married, or break up.

Hah, tell that to my ex! Clearly, he disagrees.

Buckyball, with each post I think I want you as my labmate more and more!  B)

Sigh, today it was intervening with basic safety protocol. Wear at LEAST a lab coat if you approach me at the hood -- I'm in full gear, isn't that a visual cue I'm working with something hazardous?

don't you get chewed out for no safety glasses, closed toe shoes, or long pants more than lab coats? I've never had to work with anything so hazardous that would require a lab coat, just carcinogenic, but wth can you do about that.

What's that you say, grad housing office? You mean the waitlist times to get an apartment were wildly inaccurate and I'm stuck scrambling for housing for a month because no one wants to move out of the cheapest housing in a 5 mile radius and you just didn't see that coming? Yeah, screw you too.

So much to vent about. Housing is crazy. I finally found a place after three trips. I am tired. I just finished my M.A. thesis about a month ago. My kids might have trouble with the adjustment of moving 3 1/2 hours away. And, after I move in at 2 PM on September 1, I start all day meetings for three days straight on September 3.

Great advice! I based my decision on a man choosing my university in undergrad and we broke up first semester. But almost 20 years later I'm so grateful things did not work out between us. Edited by Threeboysmom

somebody agreed to "take care of" drawing a hazardous waste sample from the process, to ship it off for analysis.

Today I just got news that the jackass who took the sample did not label it as hazardous, or even what it was. all that was written on the bottle was an obscure waste code, to which the handler of the chemical were totally clueless. so instead of packing it in ice and shipping, it was OPENED outside the fumehood, and out comes 18 ppm of hydrogen cyanide. and to top it off, the guy who said he would "take care of it" has been on vacation since Tuesday...

I mean just what the f*?

Oh lord, this a really tough decision for me right now and I have no idea what to do and I just read this right in the middle of a rough few days with my fiance. His company is thinking of giving him a huge promotion where we live but our plan is and has been to move for my phd program since before we were engaged, 8 months ago. He doesnt know for sure yet whether the promotion will go through but if it does and he takes it then he has to committ to this area for a few years. I dont want to stay here!!! I grew up here and i want to get out and I cannot live near his very needy, controlling family any longer than possible. Also, my PI and masters department are amazing but my school isnt very prestigous and I need to go somewhere else for my phd. His career means a ton to him to so I could never ask him to give up the big promotion but at the same time, we have strategically chosen the phd programs that I will applying to because they are great for me AND have lots of job opportunities for him so its not like he would be moving somewhere without opportunities.

I dont know what to do... apply like normal and just leave if he wont come? He is a really high anxiety person so turning down a promotion before he gets another job lined up would stress him out really bad. Alternatively, I was thinking that he could go ahead and start applying to jobs in some of the cities that have a large concentration of schools that are great for me. That way if he turns down the promotion, he is doing it for another great job and doesnt have uncertainty. Then I would be stuck applying in one city only but it would be a city with multiple schools that I would have applied to anyway. Any thoughts from all of your people above who went through this?

My PI got pretty annoyed at her because of all the Q's she asked (Qs that can be answered easily). I got really offended because she would ask me a question and I gave her an intellectual answer, then she would go around and ask other grad students the EXACT same question and compare the answers...I was like, "sketchy much?" now I can see why she doesn't get along with other female students and people DONT like her in general, two-faced xxxxx

finally complained to my PI about this chick today, hallelujah my PI was like, "keep in mind that she is not an official member of this group"

Dear faculty: Please do not tell me what the new students need when they arrive. Half of what you tell them is wrong. I know the school/government requirements.* I know how to get them registered. I know what they need to set up their housing. Beyond all that I know that they're sometimes lonely and scared. I know that sometimes they just need to spend an hour in my office talking about whatever is on their mind.

*Also, don't complain to me about the rules. There is no special trick to change the immigration and/or SSN rule you don't like.

work flow process, permits for everything short of walking around, risk mitigations, environmental health/safety approvals, office politics, and a handful of other bullshit I'm forgetting.

put me in a lab, and let me get shit done. or.. just quietly take me out to the back alley and shoot me.
