Resurrecting this old thread because I was wondering about the viability of living in Fairfax sans car + with a bike. I grew up nearby, but I'm not sure what the local scene is like for bikes. Are there accessible/actually useful trails or bike lanes?

Fairfax city recently implemented public electric scooters you can rent on an app. Not much people using it these days due to stay-at-home orders but I used to see some Mason students renting them and using them to go from downtown Fairfax to campus. Mason shuttle is a good way to get around. It's free and stops at downtown and also takes you to the other GMU campuses. Local cue bus is also free with Mason ID and that takes you even farther. You can use it to go to the mall, Trader Joe's and Walmart. Both Mason shuttle and cue bus can take you to the Vienna metro station. If you prefer to walk, there's a Giant and a 2-dollar movie theater across the street.
