ETH ESOP 2015

Recommended Posts

@mikibene, the professor who inteviewed me (I applied for Physics MSc) was not part of the admission comitee, so he didn't know exact dates. However, he estimated that all the decisions will be made in 1-2 weeks (starting from today)

I am anxious because of the lack of information (regarding their internal deadlines) :)

Maybe for Mech Eng they have different deadlines, idk

Yeah, I guess its always difficult to know about internal deadlines but hopefully we won't have to wait much longer  :), anyway good luck about the ESOP!

Just to echo what tudor said, the professor who interviewed me (MSc Computer Science) was not part of the admission committee either and he did not mention any kind of deadline for a decision. Judging by last year's responses that were posted here in the forum it shouldn't take more than 1-2 weeks for the decisions to come out.

I have noticed that different MSc programs have different response times, Computer Science seems to have been one of the first. I guess that if acceptances for Mechanical Engineering had been sent already someone would have posted a result here. We are still more than two weeks away from the official deadline, so don't worry, you can manage the wait with a bit of patience. Good luck!  :)

Hi everyone.

I was accepted for the MSc Management, Technology & Economics, but haven't heard anything about the ESOP yet. At this time, is there any chance left to get an interview? Does anyone who applied for MSc MTEC have more information? :)

The decision frame for the schoolarship is the following week.

Is your source of information trustworthy? It would be nice to know how much we still have to wait!

I've been checking my e-mail 100 times a day since the interview :). I know it's useless but still, I can't help it.

Good luck!

I feel you Tudor, I am on the same boat.

Regarding the decision frame, my only references are last year's decisions, which were communicated on the 5th of March if I am not mistaken.

Funny, kcmw_2014's posts are our only source of information :).

Yes, 5h of March. However, her interview was a week earlier than mine and she received the official e-mail of acceptance a week after mine - this could imply that I will receive an answer regarding the scholarship 2 weeks later than her, i.e. 19th of March. This would be too long and unfortunately I cannot concentrate on writing my thesis.

Below you have my 'milestones'. It would be nice if you (plural) could share yours - for us, this year and also for the applicants next year.

I am aware that her interview was quite earlier than ours, but I am still hopeful that we will know of the results this week. I am not sure but I guess that the deadline for acceptances/rejections by ETH was also by the 15th of March last year, so I expect some consistency.

Milestones are a good idea for present and future reference, yes!

The question was mainly directed at you, I do not know if there is anyone else here who got an interview.

There's no problem then, we just gotta have a bit more patience :)

I got an interview too. I hope this will be the decision week.

The milestones idea is pretty good, so here are mine for future reference.

Hello @camilo, now we are 3 people suffering together here.

I see you applied for Physics MSc., what will your specialization be and who interviewed you?

Does anybody know, if you're rejected for an ESOP do you still get an e-mail stating you are rejected?

I do not know for sure, but it is likely that they do not inform you if you are rejected. There are no comments addressing rejections from the ESOP in last year's thread and in the results page.

Then it's time to check this thread a million times a day if anyone else got accepted!

Hello @tudor, I had the exact same question for you. The professor who interviewed me is Matthias Troyer. I am probably gonna specialise on quantum information/computation. How about you? Who interviewed you and what will your specialisation be?

I really hope the decision will arrive early this week. And just like @nonkreon and @jmlribeiro pointed out, I guess we will have to check this thread constantly.

I'm going to study theoretical condensed matter; my pre-proposal was on topological superconductors so I guess I will study this field further if I go to ETH (i.e. only if I get the scholarship). It is rather close to quantum computation, as the main application of topological phases would be in quantum computation. I was interviewed by Manfred Sigrist, who is leading a research group exactly in this field (of my pre-proposal).

I am already checking this thread each hour (at least :) ). Nice to meet you all and good luck!

Later edit: I have a feeling that they do not inform people about rejections. If I don't get a response regarding the ESOP until Thursday, I will address this question to the scholarships office.

I see we're all pretty anxious!

I actually did some research on quantum computation last year and found it to be really interesting (from a theoretical computer science perspective, obviously  ;) ). Although my pre-proposal has nothing "quantum" on it, quantum computation is deeply related to my interests (Cryptography and Computational Complexity), so it's always nice to meet people who also study things related to quantum computation!

Off-topic, sorry.

I completed ages ago an online course on quantum computation and I saw how it works in cryptography, specifically how one can factorize large numbers exponentially faster than clasically. Very cool! Good luck. Probably there are other much cooler things in cryptography, but this is actually all I know on this matter.

I hope you get the ESOP.

Also, I am keeping my fingers crossed for anybody who has worked their way up to these standards.

It is really nice to meet you all. I hope we all get the ESOP. It would be great to meet you in person once we are at ETH.

I am aware of the application of topological phases in quantum computation. That was one of my possible research topics for my Bachelor's final year's research topic and I did some research on it. It is really interesting. Sounds great to hear about the theoretical computer science's perspective on quantum computation.

I do think I read somewhere that we would only be contacted if we were granted the scholarship but I am not sure, however it seems so on the search page though.

Good luck to you all! I hope you get the scholarship! being shortlisted for it alone means that your pre-proposals were indeed really good.

Some of us still don't know the admissions results, I guess only a little bit more patience, and this week is finally the deadline.
