Phew, nearly gave me a heart attack there. ;)

Sorry about that! I had one thing in my memory, but when I rechecked the email, it was a little different...

Well, if the following results post is to be believed...

...then that other result might be legit, and the rest of us might be hooped.

14 out of 550 suggests an expected yield of 7 or 8, which seems low...but is also in line with a lot of programs this cycle. It also means (in pure statistical terms) that we all had a 2.5% chance of acceptance. I guess I can't be too sad about an implied rejection when the odds are that long...

lol never mind then, I almost certainly am not that lucky

Sounds naive, I had no idea the odds had gotten that steep! I thought most schools were at 350ish these days

Not naive at all! It's easy to forget how long the odds are for acceptances, which is even one is a huge relief and a major luxury! And humbling...very, very humbling.

Does that mean they expect a cohort of less than 18? Or are they moving towards only sending as many invites as they have spots like other programs?

No, that part I got right the first time: OSU anticipates a final cohort of 18 (9 to each track). I don't know how many offers were made to get to that number, however.

that's fair! perhaps she was speaking more to the specific english/women's studies program, as that is the actual program she is the coordinator of?? she didn't seem to have much knowledge about other areas of the department, really.

The joint programs involve coordination between two departments; if you were in English and Gender Studies or English and Education (which is even further removed from the English Department than E&GS is), you'd have a different DGS than English Language and Literature. They're very much joint degrees. In fact, people in the joint program tend to spend more time in GS or Ed than in English. The non-English department structures your coursework and coordinates your teaching, so it makes sense that things would shake out this way. E&GS students also have a GS faculty member on their review committees (and E&E has a different procedure altogether). So if you're hearing conflicting things, that's because things vary very much depending on which program you're in. Within L&L, there's no differentiation between subfield.

Looks like Miami University is alerting Literature-- just got my rejection! Pretty bummed (understatement -- some awesome people with similar research interests!), but at least I now know 100% where I'm going. :)

Anyone hear positive news from MU yet?

Does anyone know why those Penn acceptances are missing on the results board?

I can see the acceptances and rejections still just by searching "English" and scrolling down.

Ok, whomever posted the Trump University acceptance--you win today! Literally laughing & made me so happy when I normally have so much anxiety looking at that survey page! :-P

Hahaha loved it.

Too good - needed that today.

Do we know if Yale is done notifying their lucky applicants?

Probably, although I'm retaining a (tiny) bit of hope because I applied to one of the joint programs (Renaissance studies) which I'm fantasizing may take longer because the apps have to clear two committees.

Today has been rather slow...

I am caught in the situation that according to gradcafe, my remaining schools do not notify until Late February / Early March. There's a big gap between my early acceptances and the later ones, and I need to restrain myself from making impulsive decisions.

It's funny -- I've been in a couple PMs with other GCers and we've all said the exact same thing: it's hard not to just commit to one program (even if we only have one and are waitlisted elsewhere...) and be done with it.

But as I always say...it's best to respect the process and just wait it out. It's more vexing, but it makes the most sense.

I got an email from UBC yesterday, saying that the GC has offered me an admission. My first acceptance, hooray! Though I'm still waiting for other result turnouts, I've started to consider accepting this offer. (Only if the costs were not so intimidating!)

Congrats!

Congrats! I'm the other UBC acceptance a few days ago, and I've started to consider it too! The costs, while still more than I'd prefer, are honestly less than I expected. Probably because I have American private tuition as a benchmark in my head since I did my undergrad somewhere that was like $24k per semester (if I hadn't had crazy scholarships and grants) and UBC is still less than half that per year. It's also pretty much the best fit for my research interest given the Oecologies group, so I'm pretty stoked about it.
