I would definitely prefer attending uoft because I’m from Toronto and I think they offer a great range of collaborative options to integrate into your program. I actually applied to this program last year, and was waitlisted and ended up with a rejection. This year... the GRE is definitely an obstacle for me... I didn’t do well on quant. Hoping for the best! 

But UAlberta has a very good MPH program as well. They were the first MPH program in Canada to become accredited. But I think their specialization option in epidemiology is not that well known? They offer an MSc as well!

I also applied for the MPH program at SFU and was worried that my "Application Status" tab was blank. However, when I clicked the "Continue Application" tab under STEP 1, it came up as my application was submitted. Hope this is helpful!

I see that as well - thank-you. I just figured that might differ from a "Submitted" under the "Application Status" tab with a green dot like someone mentioned earlier in this thread. Either way, I'm sure as long as we see the "submitted" as you are explaining it, we should be fine so thank-you. Best of luck to you and everyone

Ahh I see! Yeah, Epi at UofT is the only program I've applied to... so see how that goes! I might apply to another program later on, but the application is due in June, so I'll probably wait to see if I've gotten into Epidemiology first! I seems like a pretty neat program and interests me since I like the math and analytical side to it! 

But oh yes, I've heard is a pretty tough program to get into with them accepting about 1 in 8 people, as I've heard! If you don't mind me asking, is there anything you did to improve your application from last year? I'm keeping my options open to see how I can become a stronger candidate if I don't get in this year. Looking into getting some more public health experience, since I lack relevant experience. 

Oh the GRE! I decided quite late that I was going to write it, so only ended up having like 3-4 days to study for it! I was more worried about Verbal Reasoning, but I ended up doing worse in Quant than I expected- which was a bummer! 

Ahh well, we just have to wait a couple months now- not a fan of this waiting game!

Yeah the candidate net that they attract has become more and more expansive over the years... just like anything I guess. Is it the IMS program that you are looking into? 

I didn’t have any direct public health experience when I applied last year. But I’m not a top notch academic... so take this with a grain of salt. This year, I’m hoping that my clinical epi experience gets me a second look. Unless they like you and decide to give you an offer from their first round (around end of April from last year), we will be waiting for quite the while! Good luck!

Sure I'll share mine. I'll go through the 5 categories that they claim to use to access applications. 

1. Academic grades
The average of my last 10 senior level courses is a high 80, although my cumulative for my entire undergrad is much lower. 

2. Social science background
I come from a social science and social work background.

3. A statement of intent outlining your vision of health promotion and your reasons for wishing to enter the program
I think that my statement was decent. I really made an effort to look up what they were looking for and talk about how my experience fit that. (For example, talk about how I my work involves social determinants of health.)
I'm also hoping to do the health research route, so I spoke specifically about my vision for public health and the kind of research I want to do. 

4. Experience in paid or volunteer capacities, addressing determinants of health (e.g., social justice and health inequities)
As I mentioned above, I'm in social work, so it's quite easy to relate my work to social justice and health inequities. 
I work full-time at a mental health treatment centre. I've worked one year working with high school students in low-income neighbourhoods -- this was case management, helping them use education to break out of poverty. Also have 1.5 years volunteering at homeless shelters, community centres, schools for children with special needs, etc. 
I'm also currently working on publishing my first journal article in the field of public health. 

5. Two letters of reference from persons familiar with applicants’ academic and/or paid/volunteer work performance
I honestly think this was the best part of my application. I had 1 academic, and 1 work reference. Great relationships with both of them. 

All in all, I'm leaning towards accepting an offer for my masters of social work anyways. But I'm still looking forward to seeing the result of my application.

Hi! I got admission into McGill's MScPH program but still waiting for the UBC MPH result. But I really have no idea which program is better because as an international applicant I couldn't make it to their info sessions. UBC seems to rank higher and have more networking and connection opportunities? McGill seems to emphasize the epidemiology training, which might help in launching a job? So I was wondering if anyone could compare these two programs or could you share something about the two programs? Thanks a lot!

Hi! I just heard back from U. de Montreal, not sure if anybody else applied to this program since it's all french. I got accepted! Received rejection from McGill today as well (not surprising since my quant wasnt as strong as they want). I have also applied to guelph, lakehead, UofT, Waterloo, McMaster and UVictoria ... my application is still under review for all those schools!

I have also applied to this program. My background is in general health sciences. I have 5+ years of RA work experience in the field of health inequities, with two publications and having presented at 5 conferences, including my most recent one at Harvard. My GPA is okay, A- average, it's not outstanding but i'm hoping it's still competitive.  I also have 2 years experience working with marginalized populations in Vancouver's downtown east side, where I have done harm reduction outreach providing HIV/Hep C testing and information sessions. I am a member of CPHA. With Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA) I sit on their Climate Change working group and I am a technical reviewer.  I believe my references were quite strong - two leading researchers in the field of public health at top Canadian Universities. I have also been working on a health campaign called "stop marketing to kids", where I have developed a toolkit for youth to mobilize against food advertising.

I can't speak for Montreal but I can speak for Vancouver.

My coworker graduated from the UBC MPH program. As a fellow UBC student, I've been told  that the program is a little underfunded. In comparison to eastern schools, it is a consensus among UBC graduate students that the university doesn't prioritize it's graduate students and it is relatively difficult to receive funding. I was going to apply at UBC but my professor argued against academic suicide by pursuing your masters at the same school and also mentioned that funding may be a problem. The epidemiology program is a little less quantitative in comparison to McGill, but we do have some stellar researchers on board. I've spoken to the admissions head and she spoke highly of the quality of education. 

I would also take into consideration the cost of living. UBC is a BEAUTIFUL campus. I may be biased because I studied and currently work there, but we  have the mountains, the ocean and the city all within reach. It is, sadly, an expensive place to live. $1000 might warrant a sub-par basement a few kilometers off of campus. Transit can be pain to use especially in the winter months because Vancouver doesn't know how to handle snow, and nightlife here attracts an older crowd.

Hey, I applied October 12th and my status changed to "Under review" like only 2 weeks ago. I wouldn't worry too much but you can e-mail them via the application portal just to make sure! Good luck
