Indiana University-Bloomington

Recommended Posts

Just waiting to hear from IU-Bloomington... I think they usually make their move on calling admits the last week of February (I was told I would know something by the end of the month anyway). Anyone else in the hot house with me this weekend?

So, all of a sudden there is a M.A. rejection from IU on the results list (whoever posted it, sorry to hear that). I guess this means the folks in Bloomington are ready to start contacting folks. *keeping fingers crossed...

They sent out decisions today. I don't know if they put them online, or if they would be up yet. Not sure if this includes email/phone calls.

Did you call them and ask? Or do you know your result yet? What is your field? MA or PhD?

I talked to the department secretary on the phone. It is possible that I may have misheard. I'm applying for an MA and I don't know my result yet. Do you know if they post the results to OneStart? I asked, and I wasn't sure if she said "no" or "not yet."

Sorry, I'm not familiar with OneStart. I checked my online application for admission and there was no result there. I'm a PhD applicant, so I hope they have all the results ready. I guess we'll just have to wait this one out! It is good to know that things are ready to move forward, though, no matter the outcome. According to the results search, in years past they have called their PhD admits, so hearing that letters are already out makes me squirm in my chair a little. Thanks for the news! Good luck to you!

I was the one who added the result of the MA application. I got a response from the department secretary in response to my email asking her how long the decisions would take. I then mailed a professor in the department asking about about my application and how I could strengthen it. He said my qualifications were great but the department only accepted one MA applicant out of the total 129 MA&PhD applications it recieved this year. Apparently they have a policy of offering admission to only those people who they can fund and they didn't really have any money this year because of the whole economic crisis.

Oh and the change doesn't reflect on the OneStart thing. It hasn't yet for me anyway.

I had to ask though, do MA applications always receive responses after PhD applicants? Why the delay and how much is it usually?

It's my understanding that PhD spots are usually far fewer and more fully funded. Logistically, it makes sense to fill those first and then round out the department with the funding and resources allotted for the MA Program, which in some places may only be partially funded or not at all. The delay varies from dept to dept.

So, about the 1 Master's applicant thing: For serious? That would explain a lot, but also sounds shady. Anyway, the letter I received from the dept reflects the same reasons: many applicants and, especially, a lack of funding.

Well one MA is what the prof I was most interested in working with told me. I suppose it's understandable as well because the financial aid section on their website says they offer funding to 4-5 new MA and PhD students every year. So they probably took 4 or 5 PhDs and one MA because the latter is not so of a priority particularly because its going to cost the department and won't bring in any money for the university.

He quoted the precise number of applicants as well so I'll take his word for it. He said the religion department had faced severe funding cuts from the university's side and then on top of that their policy about not taking anyone they don't offer funding to.

That does make sense, especially given how tough the PhD environment is right now. I suspect every PhD applicant they offered  spot to would have taken it. At any rate, thank you for the info.

I applied to the PhD program at Indiana but got waitlisted on the MA program. Anybody have any idea what's going on there? Is it one of those programs where all are admitted as MA students and must reapply after second year? I double checked my application and sure enough I applied to the PhD...

Thought I'd bring this to the top and ask if anybody has heard back from IUB this year. Nothing on the results page for 2013 yet. The department secretary confirmed that decisions would be made by March 1st.

I called the dept. secretary yesterday and she told me to contact the graduate coordinator, who hasn't gotten back to me yet.

I just heard back from the graduate coordinator, not admitted. I'm not surprised. It was a fairly pleasant email. I'm definitely going to CU Boulder!

Brakke is at Ohio State now, in the history department, as is someone else from IU. Maybe check that out, especially if you want to work with him. We also have Kristina Sessa, who is up and coming, but brilliant.

IU is a mess right now--they lost a SIGNIFICANT amount of funding, and have had people leaving the dept in droves. I applied for the MA program, and actually just withdrew my appllication last night, as I've chosen HDS for the MTS, and figured either they would want to offer an acceptance to someone else (I still hadn't heard an answer...) and would have rather gone to a different program.
