Is a PhD in Journalism/Mass Comm unnecessary?

Hey all,

 

I'll be wrapping up my Master's in Journalism at NYU this December and have been kicking around looking for a PhD in the field. However, before I do, I wanted to reach out and make sure it's not superfluous.

 

I enjoy long-form journalism and hope to write for a niche men's interest publication, but I've always been told that I'd make a great professor. Would a PhD put me too much into the teaching category or would it also let me pursue my interests of writing for a magazine or web publication?
