  1. Some info regarding the dissertation fellowship, received this by calling in and simply asking about my status: So I was previously an alternate, not sure how they categorize or partition fields, but I'm in physics. There were basically two slots for my field and both of those that were offered accepted, so no luck for me! However, I did ask regarding the alternate status, and if it should be placed on your CV. They said they would certainly put "Ford Dissertation Fellowship: Alternate Status, Honorable Mention 2014" as opposed to simply "Honorable Mention" since it is supposed to be a higher honor. Anyway, just wanted to chime in on that since I think it's been a topic of discussion here and in other forums! Cheers--
  2. Hi all, well heard that I didn't get an offer for Japan, oh well! To those that will go, please enjoy! As per the NZ folks, I spoke with my friend Peter from my cohort last year and he will represent our class. He was in Auckland with me, and we lived together as well for about the first 2 weeks. If you haven't started looking for housing, I recommend getting in touch with your hosts and seeing if they have plans for you. If not, should look at the "flat mates wanted" section of trademe.co.nz. For the most part you can find temp housing that way. Also I purchased a bicycle on that site while I was down there. It's pretty much the most legit place to buy anything second hand in NZ.
  3. @areichar, For things like that you might want to discuss with your host. In many cases last year some went well out of their way to make sure you were all set up to do what you needed to do (i.e. secure transport, etc) but in other cases some hosts were completely hands off. So best bet is to just discuss this with your host once you're all set.
  4. Hi all, I can verify from last year it took some time for them to return emails after I replied. In fact, in 5 days, since I'm so paranoid, I emailed asking and they politely asked me to calm down, that they received it . Also the offers were "tentative" even after the DC trip. I don't remember exactly when they were official, but I do know the trip was coming up really really soon (like a week) and I was getting nervous. So moral of the story is, I think, if you get a tentative offer and you accept it, count it as set. I'm rather sure they set it as "tentative" if the entire EAPSI program loses funding or something, which probably means we all have bigger problems lol.
  5. Hi all, Good luck to everyone applying this year. I applied last year and was part of the NZ cohort at the University of Auckland. Later next year when we know the results of who got the fellowship I can give some practical info for those staying in Auckland (such as living, finding a place, blah blah) which some hosts frankly don't care to help with! I also applied for Japan this year, so I'll join the waiting game with you all. Last year I also picked only one host, for me it was with him or nothing and luckily it turned up well. My project was very specific, and as Pauli pointed out, I believe that's important. I took the same approach this year. Cheers, Richard
  6. Thanks a lot for that idea, I started one for the NZ people as well!
  7. Also Pauli gets a beer from me also! I would love to meet everyone from this forum and I'm interested in any events you all plan for a meetup.
  8. Hi everyone, Sorry I'm late to give the news, but I will also be arriving at 2:30pm at Raegan National (DCA). Also since the first day is rather free, I was interested in sight seeing also. If anyone wants to join, would be great. The main thing I want to see was the Air and Space museum at the Smithsonian. I could pretty much spend the whole day seeing all the smithsonians, but if anyone is interested in seeing something else I'm cool with that also!
  9. NZ applicants: just got an email for a tentative offer . I guess they're starting to go out!
  10. Hi, I also applied for NZ and have yet to hear back. I called Dr Kimsley twice this week and left a voicemail the first time. They haven't gotten back to me either so they must be swamped, at least that was my assumption as well.
