  1. I got a rejection in January from them.
  2. I'm still waiting to hear from 4 schools I applied to. A few the application deadline was January 15 so it has not been 8 weeks yet. For two of my applications, though, it has been 8 weeks (well over for NYU but I'm assuming that is a rejection). As I would like to start moving towards a decision for the fall (with the schools I have heard from) I am planning on following up on some of my applications. I have noticed people mentioning they have done this on here. Should I email the graduate admissions office or the graduate director of my program?
  3. As an undergraduate I sold all of my chemistry textbooks after my classes ended for some reason, not thinking that I would actually find them useful in the long run. Now that I'm gearing up for grad school I would like to start reviewing for the placement exams many schools require incoming students to take. What are your favorite inorganic/organic/physical chem textbooks you used in undergrad? How much of a difference does the edition make? For example, the Miessler Inorganic 5th edition (2013) is $95 used on Amazon but I found the 2nd edition (1998) for $20. How much would I miss out on by buying an almost 20 year old textbook?
  4. I got my first acceptance offer for a PhD program last week. In their email they invited me for their open house at the end of next month. Unfortunately, there was no mention of potential funding for a visit, which I know other schools offer. I called the department office on Friday afternoon and was told that this is something they do offer if appropriate, and I should email the director of the graduate program. Sunday afternoon, I sent him an email explaining the program was my first choice and I am not currently able to afford a plane ticket to visit (as a reply to the email informing me of my acceptance). It's been 3 days now, and I haven't gotten a reply. In this situation, what would everyone suggest for followup? I work in academia now and know how fine the line is between coming off as irritating and conscientious. Should I send another email? Call? I work full-time and the nature of my job, especially over the next two days, doesn't allow me time to call during working hours tomorrow so I would have to leave a voicemail.
