man double the salary? You have gotta get into a cushier field
-
or they could just schedule maintenance every night this week. in case its ready to go up.

I judge people based on grammar, syntax, and haircut.

I would encourage students to support a cause that they believe in, and make a difference where they can. I wouldn't advocate setting it up so all your incoming grad students get set up in the same outreach program. Thats just highschool all over again, where no one actually cares about waht they are doing, they are just going through the motions. Finding outreach projects that fit my goals and interest me has been pretty rewarding. Encourage students to do it, yes. Encourage ALL grad students to apply for the NSF GRFP, yes. Give them prepackaged broader impacts activities? Hell no.

Most people will admit the decision process is a mess. Some applicants are outstanding must-funds, but most people are qualified and put together a decent proposal. Hence the emphasis on broader impacts. Speaking of broader impacts, I'm curious if anyone goes to a "feeder" school where they set you up with a charity activity etc and you dont really have a choice. How did you feel about the whole process? All is fair, and all, and its great that they get everyone volunteering, but how valuable is the experience with what they set you up with?

wow guys. I dream about space monsters and zombies and fun stuff. At least dream about flying, or showing up to lab naked.

FY 2010: actually starts on October 1, 2009, approx when NSFGRFP funding starts. Go ahead skygazers and cloudworshippers.
-
We've just got nothing to talk about. the two week notice thing isn't even new
-
So the FY2009 budget appropriation may or may not include the GRFP? ARRA?
-
man I am relieved to be a second year, means I'm not eligible for this god forsaken fellowship next year
-
go us young people. Anyone care to elaborate on the spacerace thing?
-
The nonsense is if none of the additional funding is going to the GRFP why are they dragging this out? If it's a trivial number of additional awards, why not just award them and work it out later?
-
translation: that bs about installments and disciplines has nothing to do with the honorable mentions/extra awards
-
Damn voodoo, better pray to the ad hoc gods. that is a real bummer.
-
My take was "2 weeks" ie two additional weeks from when they put that message up, so around the 27th. The above poster has a different take on it, but I think by the end of today is not what they mean
-
yes. New timeframe is ~2 weeks (http://www.nsfgrfp.org/) but I'm not sure when that ~2 weeks starts, I would guess beginning of this week, meaning new deadline (that they have no obligation to keep) is 24th/27th?
-
Assuming that none o the extra 3 billion goes to GRFP, an additional 700 fellows is a nice number.
-
She does sound very discouraging. I'll be amused if they don't make any additional awards after this hahah. Time frame? I guess early May. (oh please don't be early May).

I emailed info@nsfgradfellows.org. Don't expect a response tonight. But after having it looming in my mind all weekend (i can't believe it's only been that long), I want to rule out NSF's inconsistent emails.... It's a tough question as to how many of the HM's are being considered for fellowships. Some posters seem to think that there is a definitive line between honorable mention and funded. In particular, the amusing post about how funding honorable mentions is bad for the US economy because these are not viable graduate students. Glad to know all the real science is done only by the very top group of scientists as determined by highly random groups of panelists. The point is, however blurred that line is between honorable mention and award, factored in with available funds, will determine the amt of additional awards. That would make it far worse for them to release a partial honorable mention list. If you arent on that list, and you don't get a fellowship but a second round HM, think of how close you would have been! Additionally, it shows how many of their honorable mentions were seriously considered for funding. "based on field of study and other factors." Oh those other factors...
-
Ouch, sorry to hear that. You've scared me into emailing them myself.

He probably just plugs his comments into a victorian age babblefish
