From the websites I've seen, you're correct that you (the principle visa holder) can study on a part-time basis only. You may be able to qualify for part-time PhD studies based on the number of credits for which you register. As far as I know, though, you aren't able to hold two visa statuses...you have to give up one. You should talk to the International Students' Graduate Department at the university as they are likely to have a better idea...

I was accepted into the Social Work PhD program and will be heading to PSU for September. Is anyone else headed that way?

Just wondering if anyone knows how/when applicants are notified of decisions. I received an email from Portland State at the end of February (with a letter to follow), but am still waiting to hear from the University of Washington and UC Berkeley. With the latter two, it looks as if you only can check the status of your application online (whether it was submitted), but cannot view any decision/outcome about your application. Am I missing something?

I received an email that said the official letter would follow in the post. At first, I thought the email was generic, so was pleasantly surprised to see it was personalised and mentioned my research interest! When I checked the results page on the forum, someone else was accepted last week. You have to remember that their deadline for admissions was the beginning of January, so it hasn`t been very long. Waiting is awful, but I think there`s still hope! Good luck!

Well, I have a bit of an update...I was accepted to Portland State! I'm still waiting to hear from University of Washington and UC Berkeley. Just so you know, my GRE math scores really sucked...to the point my brother asked if I have learning difficulties! I did do well on the verbal and written portions of the GRE, though. I think having a very strong personal statement, a defined and focused area of study, and good letters of reference makes a huge difference.

Well, I've only just finished submitting my applications. Unfortunately, my math score on the GRE was abysmal, but I'm hoping my decent verbal and written scores and a very strong statement will offset that. I did apply to the University of Washington, Portland State, and UC Berkeley. I've already resigned myself to not getting accepted (due in large part to my GRE scores), though. I don't anticipate getting my rejection letters/emails until March or April, so can't provide an update at this stage.

Yes, I think that is why I am leaning toward the PhD (despite my deficiency in math!). I'm not in any way confident that I will get accepted into any of the three schools, but I'm willing to try! For those of you who are waiting for confirmation (or rejection) this year, can you give me some indication of your GRE scores? Thanks.

I am going to apply for my PhD for 2010 admission. Right now, I still waiver between a PhD or a DSW, though. I'm trying to get motivated to study for the GRE, but knowing my ineptness at math, this is proving a difficult task. I've narrowed the universities I will apply to based on geography first and "fit" second. I'm not prepared to spend 4-6 years of my life in a city I don't like! I'm considering (and will apply to) the University of Washington, Portland State, and UC Berkeley.
