  1. Hey dmh: Primarily Maurine Greenwald; maybe also Richard Oestricher. (I do late 19th/early 20th c. US history, with an interest in women's history.) Any info you have about them would of course be great!
  2. Got an email acceptance from Pitt this morning! They were kind of my safety school (not as many people in my field, but well-placed geographically, and I *heart* Pgh), but it's still nice to hear that people are interested. (Actually, I would consider myself very lucky to be able to pick up a position on faculty there someday...but that's a long, long time ahead in the future. )
  3. Wow. That's interesting. I've also heard that Ann Arbor is a nice town -- wonder if maybe he's just burnt out with undergrad shenanigans right now? I like the idea of being somewhere like my undergrad, which is also a big college town in the middle of nowhere. But it can get a little oppressive when everyone is 18-22 and "feeling their oats" as the Victorians might say. For my part, I asked him about whether a car would be needed and he said "Well, there are two answers. Yes and no."
  4. Thanks, nomadism. My field is Gilded Age/Progressive Era American history. I hope that you hear soon and that it's good news! BTW, AMC and Amanda: were you able to login to the official "friends of UMich" page to see your decision? Mine doesn't have anything different on it...
  5. Yeah...while I wasn't impolite at first when I picked up and didn't know who it was, my tone definitely changed when he said where he was calling from. I'm sure this will give you sweet dreams!
  6. Ditto! I saw a missed call at 2:30 this afternoon from a number I didn't recognize, and didn't put two and two together until I got a call at 10PM tonight saying that I was in at UMich! (I will admit that I was totally flabbergasted and unprepared, LOL.) Anyway, congrats AMC and Amanda and I hope more people begin to hear as well.
  7. FYI, I too was rejected from Yale. It may sound sour grapes-y, but I'm really not that bummed. I'm going to figure that if I'm doing good work *somewhere*, people will be interested. That place doesn't have to be Yale or any other Ivy. The fact that they made a choice about me means that I didn't have to make a choice about them -- and now I don't have to negotiate New Haven's real estate prices! That being said, major 'grats to those who were accepted -- hold your head up high!
  8. Eeeee! I am so happy for you! Congratulations, EL. I'm glad that your patience was awesomely rewarded.
  9. I got the email from Wendy Gamber, but I was interested in Judith Allen, Ellen Dwyer, and Michael McGerr's work too. And a big thanks to el217 for the kind words, too.
  10. Just wanted to let people know that I received a letter from a professor at at Indiana University (Bloomington) with whom I had corresponded earlier in the process, telling me that I had been accepted to their MA/Ph.D program, with 5-year funding. No word on what sources exactly or how much though. FYI, I'm into Gilded Age and Progressive Era American history, with a social/cultural bent and an interest in women's history. Also, I'm impressed as anything by all the Russianists, Latin American studies, Chinese history, etc that I see on these boards! It's awesome to know that there are so many brilliant people going through this process with me. This is my first acceptance, so it's nice to know that at least one school wants me for sure. Good luck to everyone else watching and waiting, and I hope that everyone else gets good news ASAP!

    French

Hello French speakers, This might be somewhat irregular, but I'm actually posting here because I don't speak French... I'm working on an honors BA thesis on domestic feminism and cooperative housekeeping in the later 19th and early 20th centuries. I've found a French academic who seems to have written a number of articles on this topic -- of course, they're all in French, which I don't speak! My Spanish is sufficiently similar that I can see that some of this might be very useful for my thesis, but obviously I wouldn't want to venture a translation for my thesis using Babelfish or something. So here's my question: would anyone on here be looking for a spot of translation work? Most of the articles are something like 14 or 15 pages, and for some I may just need a page or two translated. I put out a request through my advisor for anyone local who would be interested, and I got an offer to translate for $2/page. While this is eminently reasonable for skilled labor...I simply don't have the funds to drop $30 or $40 out-of-pocket on a translation right now. (You all have been applying to grad schools -- you know the financial toll that takes!) I know that I'm basically asking for charity, but I could probably offer about $10 or $15 -- and of course credit for the translation in my citation. The thesis will be "published" in my university's library and available through inter-library loan. If anyone is interested, please reply or private-message me. Also, if this message is too far off-topic or against forum rules, I apologize to the mod and members and will delete it immediately. I just thought that this might be the best place to come for understanding people with great skills! Good luck to everyone waiting on their applications, and I hope that you all get into your first choices, with ample funding!
  12. It was in late December, from one of the Rutgers history dept's chairs for graduate education, giving me more information about some of the people who I said I was most interested in working with, and encouraging me to get in touch with them. Also, information about open houses, common sources of funding, and basically saying that it was a really nice department and that I should email him back if I had more questions. Again though -- DON'T PANIC. It was a nice letter, but I still don't have a decision, according to their website! I figure it's all gonna be the blitz of March. Just relax and enjoy this time before you have to make a decision, you know? Schroedinger's Cat is still in the box.
  13. Hi there eahistory -- I'm also planning to do work in the American Gilded Age and Progressive Era! You've got the technology aspect though, while I'm more interested in social/cultural and women's history. I've applied to UNC, Duke, University of Maryland, Pitt, Indiana, Michigan, Rutgers, Harvard and Yale. So far the only one I've heard from is Rutgers -- nothing official, but a nice letter saying that they're interested.
