  1. congratulations to all that were accepted.  I only sent in 3 applications this year, it was sort of last minute, and received 2 interviews.  Unfortunately I did not receive an offer.  I have pretty decent academic record, especially my last 2 years, have been 2nd or third author on three pubs, and I have lab experience.  Though to be honest I am well removed from lab activities.  I am currently project coordinator at a CRO, preparing  gen tox reports for regulatory agencies and Sponsors.  Going back to the lab is not really an option.  After my interviews, for neuroscience programs, I realized that I really want this.  I was disappointed that I didn't get accepted, that being said I do plan on applying next year.  My question is "what can I do to improve my chance for acceptance next year?"

  2. It's normal for someone to apply to a given program twice, but I might disagree with reapplying to a program that rejected you post interview if there were issues with your fit in the program. I'm not sure if that's your case but I'd hesitate to call anything my outright top choice until visiting and seeing what they're all about in person.

Forgive me if this is an incorrect assumption, but the way you worded your post sounds like you have offers from other programs. If you decline an offer, you should not reapply to that program. I think it's irresponsible decline your offers for a chance to reapply for one program, even though that's the dream. You wouldn't have applied to 2nd, 3rd, etc choices if you didn't think you might attend them, right?

I did have an onsite interview, I think that's what makes it worse.  I figured reapplying would be daft but I wanted to get the consensus of the people.  And your assumption was rightish, had other interviews haven't an offer yet on those.  And I would take one in heartbeat if it meant that I can continue my passion.

  3. So after doing the interview weekends, I have sent thank you note to the different interviewers and others that I have met.  I try to personalize each one, in hopes that it doesn't look as if I am using a template.  Anyway, when they email back it's a really short message.  Should I be concerned?

  4. A question I hope someone can answer.  I replied to an invite a couple days ago and I had the choice between the weekend of Feb. 6 and Feb. 13.  I decided on Feb. 13 do to work stuff.  However, another school I applied also gave me an invite (today) for the same weekend and it's the only weekend they do it.  I emailed the Prof and asked him if I could switch weekends from Feb 13 to Feb 6, so I can go to both places.  I told him that I have a conlict in my schedule but I would still make it the original weekend if things couldn't change.  Did I do the right thing? I honestly sent the email before I even thought about, I was excited.  I just don't want to leave a bad taste in their mouth.  Any advice or words of wisdom is welcomed

Research Experience: 3+ years directed and volunteer research on presymptomatic HD neurotransmitter release and reuptake at home institution that included several presentations (national and local) a couple abstracts and just recently a co-author on a publication.  Also was introduced and became efficient in cell and tissue culturing, biological assays, microdialysis, tissue sectioning, stereotaxic surgery, and rodent behavior analysis and animal handling.  Aided in the study design and data collection, as well as co-authored, two studies on altruism (psychology).  One involving smoking behavior and the other on the differences of between religion and political affiliation on altruism.  After graduating and relocating for my job, I have volunteered at the local uni's neuroscience program.  The first project I worked on involved using CORT to stimulate the physiological responses involved with stress and see if forced exercise would ameliorate the effects that CORT has on BDNF.  Unfortunately this project didn't go anywhere.  After months of work the grad student kinda flaked.  The samples are still in the freezer.  The next project involving the differential effects on the sensitization of amphetamine with concurrent exposure to restraint stress in rats.  Results from this research were presented at local conferences.  Was supposed to go to D.C. and present it at the national conference. But couldn't make it out there.  Possible future publication after ELIZA assays are performed.  Plus, there is interest from other labs on the effectiveness of our variable restraint paradigm that we instituted for this project.

applying was a last minute thing.  Got motivated to pursue a grad degree after a colleague of mine finished her Ph.d. a couple months ago.  I already know my GRE's are shit but I was hoping my research and work experience might make up for that.  Anyway, tell me what you think.

  6. For me the GRE is like the girl you've always had a crush on.  From a distance you're fine, nothings wrong, you're smooth.  But when she starts to talk to you, you turn into an idiot.  As my test date (2nd time) I can feel the tension building.  I know the info but it's not there when I need it.  Last night studying, I couldn't remember anything from before, especially the quant.  Does anybody have any advice, tips, tricks, or anything.  Three weeks and counting.

  7. Thank you both for your reply.  I have already contacted a couple labs to see if they were taking students next fall.  And that damn GRE, grrr.  I already took it need to take it again though.  I do appreciate the reassurance.  Sometimes I just need a reminder.  If you guys have any other suggestions about the grad school application process, do tell.

    again thank you

  8. Hello everyone,

I would like to go to grad school.  I suppose that is easier said than done.  My concern (fear) is that i'm won't be able to get in.  Long story short, I did not have the best regard for school after I graduated high school.  I worked two jobs and the classes that I were taking at a community college didn't mean that much to me.  Sad story I know.  So I received some incompletes and overall it was a shit show.  A few years later I moved and started university full time.  I'm not sure but I fell into neuroscience.  I love it.  For the 3 years I was at uni, I did well.  I received 3.52 gpa, on several posters and abstracts, I learned several bench tops, wrote a research proposal, and attended conferences.  I basically immersed myself while I was there.  I ended up helping a lot of my peers in the program with a lot of the upper level classes.  Additionally, I also received a degree in psychology and was fortunate to be co-author on two published articles in peer reviewed journals.  Anyway I graduated and now work at a CRO as coordinator.  I still would like to attend graduate school for neuroscience but I fear the discretion's in my earlier life will prevent that.  Also, I fear that I might be a little late to party as well.  I'm nearing 30.  Does anyone have there own story that may be similar? hints? tricks? or anything at all?

    Thank you
