  1. okay stop feeling sorry for yourselves.......start reapplying or improving your apps. The only real solace can be found in a few areas... 1)These schools have dwindling number of places to appoint you, so they arent in the business of producing unemployable Phds. 2) they desperately need women and minority applicants! Even with heavy emphasis on recruiting underrepresented groups into the fields, it isnt working and women aren't getting tenure and minorities aren't applying to the programs. Great article about Princeton's grad school's lack of diversity: http://prince-web1.princeton.edu/archiv ... 9741.shtml 3) Your field is dead. They are falling all over themselves to recruit into certain "fields of the future" and have no interest in Russian history (largely), standard British and French history, military history, ancient Rome. If you do Gay and Lesbian slave diaries in antebellum Texas--maybe they can find a place for you. As an undergrad at one of the top (graduate) history programs I remember sitting through graduation and hearing the PhDs theses' titles---I almost fell over laughing...... From a top notch faculty member at another program: whoever is working for min wage...you are nuts. You had to have gone to a top school---go get a consulting job or go teach high school history in the inner city (at least you'll get benefits). Life doesn't end at grad school admissions.
  2. For some solace: ---Now emeritus professor of History at a Big Bad Top 10 program
  3. well---exactly---that may be then how did someone already get rejected? last years admits all knew by 2/26 so theres a lot of time in front of us....
  4. Modern Europe is closed----there was 1 admit
  5. I was puzzled by the reject on the board and called the Dept---the secretary seemed puzzled that any rejections had been notified and totally unsure about decisions.....maybe the reject isnt real...if so....i apologize but the front office secretary seemed genuinely confused that anyone had been told they WERE NOT admitted
  6. stanford most decisions have been made "it really depends on the field"
  7. well hope springs eternal I wish you good luck---I realize you guys are all freaking out too so I understand your tone but my understanding was different than "most"
  8. well of course, but also its true that the decisions were made already so the conjecture on this thread and others about that forthcoming acceptances are coming is wrong. im sorry for that and sit in dread about my other decisions
  9. No one---conjecture about decisions at berkeley is over-----if you didnt hear, you're not in.
  10. if you havent heard you've probably been rejected. all decisions (acceptances) have been made and rejection letters are forth coming....sorry to be the bearer of bad news
  11. "The department receives 350 to 400 applications and selects a class of around 26 students each year. " I'd say they have a 50% yield at least so no more than 50 applicants are accepted.....but if you dont know or werent paying attention Berkeley had alot of recent turnover--retirees and departure so they may not "yield" alot of top applicants who dont want to work with junior faculty or may not want to overload their junior faculty with grad students so early--so it may fluctuate wildly.
  12. trickling in? how many berkeley accepts have been issued? ive only seen one and its an international student and maybe be a super informal prof letter.......
  13. I am getting so neurotic right now---wasting time at work reading these forums----I have such an unrealistic sense of the turmoil of the next weeks...maybe I'm terribly competent and qualified and I'll be accepted everywhere---or maybe I'm out of my league and will be in nowhere---Peace Corps anyone? Those who've been rejected for a whole cycle before...can you offer some advice? what did you do by mid march when it was clear you wouldnt be in grad school in the fall.....Did you plow into a career? get lost in a bottle? something wacky?
