Oh for fuck's sake, math123, welcome to life. These things are a crap shoot in the first place, a. And b, all of them are looking for *something that makes you different.* For math123, that might have happened to be race. But if your didn't get one, it's on both the random aspect and the fact that *you* didn't make your application interesting enough.

Only one more for my discipline....for a total of seven. Ouch. HM, here, but I'm pretty pleased, actually--my reviews are quite positive on the whole; definitely better than last year. Congrats everyone!

mew. this is taking so long it hurts.
-
This is just about exactly how I feel. Higgins, good luck. Good luck everyone.

Thank god for Jon Stewart, to distract me when the site goes down tonight. (Yes, I totally get my news from the daily show and NPR. What?)
-
Higgins, this is evil, evil I say.

Okay, but clearly you're not expected to support yourself on that--either the school expects you to go into debt to complete the program (which some do, and if that's your case, my sympathy) or you have some other source of funding. And yes, dudeblight I do need to get into a cushier field. Trust me, after a year of working to support a baby on these salaries (at a school that DOES NOT GIVE INSURANCE TO DEPENDENT OFFSPRING), my husband and I are concerned, and both praying I get this. Sounds like you're in one of those hateable fields where they pay grad students as much as my major prof (a tenure track professor) makes now. Wow, this makes me sound bitter. I swear I'm not, I'm just trying desperately to stop imagining how sweet it would be if I got a grant so that I don't waste half a day if I'm not among the lucky winners of this crazy thing.

Seriously. Double my salary, and I'm not gonna be worried about refreshing anything.
-
I haven't gotten a chance to look at your message, unfortunately; sorry. Too much TA-ing in addition to class in addition to trying to figure out a dissertation and having a 10 month old...really wish I had an NSF right now, lol, to take out that TA-ing.
-
Yeah, I would just love someone to say, consistently, publicly, "Not before Tuesday" or something like that. If it came out sooner, no biggy, we'd all be psyched. When the day came around they could update it to "Not before" some other day, and then I could pause the incessant refreshing of "did i get one did i get one did i get one" in my head until said date.

Hahah, I missed all the python quoting! Can we go back to that instead of depressing guessing about numbers? I now have always look on the bright side of life stuck in my head. At least 42 is an excellent guess, denidzo.

Not for cultural anthropologists, it isn't. This is one of the reasons biological anthro people and cultural anthro people are so confused by being in the same department.
-
What are you trying to do?
-
Me too--this year there were six, same as last year.
-
Remind me again--was that additional or total?

The Anxio-tron 3000 continuously monitors your status on any one of a number of pending data points such as grant applications, admissions decisions, qualifying exam results, and paper submissions, constantly refreshing its knowledge of concrete measures of your value to the Academy at large, so you don't have to. Worst robotics invention *ever*
-
Oh gosh, don't get my hopes up. So sick of waiting. (man, keep saying the same thing over and over again. I swear I'm not some kind of robot, guys.)
-
No! Thou shalt not tempt the trolls.
-
oh, boo, what happened to it?
-
I keep doing this horrible thing to myself where I oscillate back and forth between being sure that I'm going to win one and being sure I'm not. Right now I think I might get one....in twenty minutes I will remember that funding for monkeys kinda sucks.
-
Hahah, I have *way* too many research goals. This is one of.......many.
-
I actually know someone who was told by their major professor *not* to waste their time applying. Ouch. I'm with you, liatris & denidzo. Departments should instill early on the idea that funding attracts more funding, and that even the effort to apply is something to be respected. My major professor made it pretty clear that not applying was not a good option for his students, heh. Onto happier topics: Summer research. I'm going to collect domestic dog genetic samples from seven countries this summer, so woohoo!

Yeah, there are only so many ways to optimize search algorithms. What will really blow your mind is how well stuff like diffusion of chemicals inside organism cells scales up to diffusion of animals across a landscape. Biology+Math=awesome.

I'm looking at Leakey and a ton of other little biology and primatology grants--I'll probably apply to W-G, but it's a stretch unless they like my argument that primate foraging is relevant to human foraging evolution.

NSF: Proving there's a reason they became scientists and not novelists since 2009. PS: If you guys really want to terrify yourselves, consider the fact that I've been waiting on NSF so long I've started looking at Dissertation Improvement Grants. I'm not even joking.
