PhD. in Continental Philosophy in Leiter Dept.
anon530 replied to objectivityofcontradiction's topic in Philosophy
The programs you have listed are certainly some of the best for German Idealism, and a couple of them for Critical Theory. I think you should probably be aware, however, that this is a very ambitious list of programs. Even though they are all quite receptive to students proposing to study in your AOI, if, as you say, your background is primarily in Continental Philosophy (does this mean you have not taken many courses in metaphysics, epistemology, mind, value etc.?), then you will be up against some very steep competition. For example, I have known several people (with very strong MAs in Continental Philosophy) who have applied to a very similar list to yours their first time around and have been shut out. Generally this has meant applying a little more broadly the next time around, i.e. to more of the programs listed in the pluralist guide. While the programs you mentioned are all top-notch, I think that DePaul, Emory, Kentucky, Memphis, BU, Warwick (UK) and the list goes on, are in most cases as good (and in some better) for your AOI. From looking at your list, it seems that you have let the Leiter rankings fully determine your picks. I would say this is very unwise, but that is just my opinion. Good Luck! -
Just out of interest, do you think he was suggesting that there is no available funding for entering Ph.D. students at the moment?
-
if you don't mind me asking, was your wait-list email solicited or unsolicited?
-
a good one at that. would you mind sharing your AOI again? and maybe any details from the offer?
-
figured that was you because it mentioned a publication
-
it was a mistake. the grad secretary accidentally sent rejection notices to part of the wait list.
-
my sense is that the acceptance was legit and the first round of offers have been made, but the wait list has yet to be finalized. i can't say for sure though.
-
oh, no sorry, i meant Nova.
-
Apparently the department was having its final adcom meeting today and we should know of their decisions in 'the next couple of weeks'. ugh
-
any info on the villanova acceptance?
-
in order to be vanderbilted everybody else that applied would have to be on the 'second-tier' wait list along with you. sounds like you might actually have been wait listed.
-
would the recent Memphis admits care to share any info on their acceptances/other offers?
-
would any of the Penn State acceptances care to share any other offers they have gotten?
-
where is your other acceptance from, if you don't mind?
-
antiquated indeed. most of what i find exciting in philosophy at the moment resists any classification according to the categories analytic/continental.
-
congrats on the offer! you said this is your first good news, have you had any 'bad' news i.e. rejections, so far?
-
would either of you consider attending if you were accepted to the MA program?
-
hahahaha, awesome. i think that should become standard terminology for posting on TGC. Other - Vanderbilt'd.
-
if you don't mind, where did you come by this information?
-
if you don't mind me asking, what is your AOI? have you applied anywhere else?
-
sorry, where do you get 17?
-
About the Vanderbilt stuff: the issue seems to be that nobody that has applied has received an official rejection; which would imply that this 'larger unofficial waitlist' would include the entire applicant pool. it seems that everybody that has posted on grad cafe (save one person, as far as I can tell) got the same assurance that 'they had not been rejected.' i am wondering whether it could be that they don't intend on going any deeper than the 7 person wait list; and whether this comment is more about making people wait for their official notices of rejection.

anybody want to claim the Oregon admits?
-
magog, i noticed your post from last year. your list was virtually identical to what mine is now (I dropped a couple of the more competitive programs for ones where i thought i had a slightly better chance). would you mind if i asked which programs you managed to get into and what sort of application you had? (by which I mean GPA, GRE, MA or not etc.)
