Does anyone know how strict they are about the 450 hour? I have been offered a part time non-university job and would be bring my total worked hours to around 100 more than the max for the year... please let me know
-
really... well this almost makes me question what is even the point of applying for scholarships if your funding is going to be roughly the same as if you just went with the funding package :/
-
can universities reduce internal funding if you received a CGS-M? My funding letter said the internal funding (TA-ship and a merit-based entrance scholarship) will be "adjusted" if I receive a CGS-M. I feel this is kind of fishy ... thoughts?

I received a cgs. Am i allowed to change my topic if my interests change? thanks

Canadian Universities MSW. The waiting game 2015 admissions
cheesecake replied to smpalesh's topic in Social Workers Forum
oh dear - I am not equating oppression with currency. I am saying that there are barriers for marginalized peoples within the social work profession. This is important when you consider the damage the profession has done and continues to do (overrepresentation of Native and Black kids in child welfare, institutionalization of disabled people) – social workers were and continue to be complicit in this. The key word in social work is SOCIAL, not clinical, or psychological, or medical. If the people from communities impacted by social issues are not adequately represented in the profession and in schools, this means that a lot of important knowledge that could inform clinical practice is being excluded. These issues will also impact your experiences as a grad student as well. PS while males are underrepresented in social work, take a wild guess about what the gender and colour of those in upper level management are in social work? -

Yes - tokenism and discomfort would characterize McMaster as well. Homophobia and heterosexism is prevalent - there is support for the LGBTQ community which is great - however, when I was there, it was still a pretty white group and I am not certain if students from QTPOC communities felt included. I think it's important to consider these issues because it would play out in your grad school experience. In research, it can impact how you are supported by the school. I was involved in a major research project as part of my BSW and I certainly saw differential support and opportunities provided by faculty between white and racialized students and I did not feel safe to bring them up. I'm not saying they are awful people but from my experiences, there's sometimes a lack of reflection on certain practices. 50 white students in a school of 60 is still 'mostly white' -

I did my BSW at McMaster. Everyone speaks highly of the program but the elephant in the room is that it is 90 % white bougie white kids. Most importantly, there's not a lot of support for racialized students. The expert on anti-oppression is a straight white able-bodied british man who is worshiped like a god there and i just found this odd. Another important note is that Mac MSW does not have a placement and is thesis based. -

I got this email too. It sounds extremely positive - but still, vague. In the case this is an acceptance, can anyone help me decide between Ryerson and York be (1 year program)? They both are critical perspectives, I know. -

Yes - it's very frustrating and is part of the reason why I applied for an MSW this year. I would be happy to work and get a lot of experience - however, it seems that everyone wants an MSW just to get into a decent job. I've been juggling part time and relief work and I really gotta question whether a graduate of a 2 year MSW program is more qualified than someone with 4 year BSW. -

Hi All, I just got an offer of acceptance from York - still waiting to hear from Ryerson though. Anyone know when Ryerson will make a decision? Good luck to everyone ! -
Hey everyone - I am in Canada and I just had a question about undergraduate transcripts and applying for MSW program. I am currently finishing up a BSW. Here's some background information: I enrolled in an online course (not for social work) thinking that I could transfer it to meet an elective. I didn't get a letter of permission because it was pre-approved and so I simply registered with the online university. I found it very difficult to keep up with the course (on-line is just my way of learning) and it is past the drop deadline, meaning that if I withdraw, I would receive a fail. I am not sure if it's worth continuing as the deadline to submit the course work and complete exams is nearing and I am wondering, if failing by withdrawing from this course will hurt any future grad school endeavours? Thank you in advance for your help! cheesecake

Hi Citychild; that sounds rough and I understand why you would want to go to a different school. The city my school is in is more diverse than the program. I experienced racist comments from my professors and my peers and though I tried to address it in the past, I found it extremely draining as people always denied it and somehow made it my fault that i was upset. Do you know where you would like to go for graduate school?

Hello all, This is my first time posting here. I'm currently in a BSW program in Canada and I am interested in applying for my MSW in a couple of years. Through my BSW journey, I realized that diversity (gender, race, ability etc) in faculty and student body is really important for me but lacking in my current program. It's pretty white, hetero, middle-class. I sometimes find this frustrating as I find myself thinking that my program does not practice what it preaches nor does it make any seriouse commitments to systemic changes. I was wondering... What kind of anti-oppression initiatives exist within your programs? What programs have most *diversity* in their faculty/students? Anything else?
