  1. BU BME acceptances coming in. Y'all think these will be the only round of acceptances?

on CC someone called BU BME and they said "The adm com is still meeting every week. There is no estimate of when all invites will done being sent out." and if you look at results it does seem like they are sending acceptances intermittently.

  2. Hi All! Just thought I'd throw in my two cents.

    UGrad GPa: 3.8

    GRE: 166 Q, 162 V

Research: Almost two years in tissue engineering lab, one published poster and presentation. Two summer REU's

Applying to BME PhD programs at:

Duke, Upenn, WashU, Carnegie, RPI, Cornell, Case, UVA, UMich,

So far I've been accepted to Carnegie, WashU, RPI

    Interviews: Duke

    Rejections: None (so far)

I'm really interested in Upenn and was wondering if anyone has heard anything back yet? I've read it should be around now otherwise not at all, so I'm starting to get a little nervous!

Thanks and good luck to all!

I got an email from UPenn today.

They're really upfront about which professors are open to accepting grad students for next year. I'm not sure yet if I will go to the interview because a lot of the faculty I was interested in aren't recruiting... Lots of neuroengineering and radiology faculty are recruiting, though, if you're interested in that.

  3. for those of you who like admissions statistics... some enterprising person on college confidential found a lot of detailed stats for particular schools.

i'll just link a couple that are relevant to a lot of people here but original thread is here.

university of washington: for each graduate program, it lists average gpa/gre for rejects, admits, and enrollees, # of applicants/admits (and international admits), and more.

ut austin: GRE and admission/yield rates for each department

  4. What do you mean pre-interview screening? I emailed a professor at Duke myself, and he said he'd email me back after reviewing my application if he had any questions.

Like sassypants said, they call people whose applications interest them, to try to get a feel for whether you would be a good fit for them. Then if they like you, you'll get an invite for a visit. The admissions process at Duke BioE is pretty centered on individual faculty rather than a centralized committee, as I understand it.

  5. Has anyone heard from University of Washington, Stanford, Duke, Harvard, or the joint UCB/UCSF bioengineering programs, whether that be rejection, interviews, or acceptances? Not a peep for me.

I know two friends who have heard from professors at duke, for pre-interview screening. And I'm pretty sure ucb/ucsf and uw haven't started sending anything yet. Don't know about Stanford or Harvard though.

  6. Where are you getting your information? Here's what I pulled from the Programs page at the MIT Department of Biological Engineering (http://web.mit.edu/be/programs/grad_application.shtml):

"We require interviews of our applicants during our Interview Weekend March 8 & 9, 2013. Interviews are by invitation only; notification of selection takes place in mid/late February and will be posted on your online account. An invitation to interview thus signals that your application has reached an advanced stage of consideration, but does not guarantee admission. Candidates will be notified of interview selection until the end of March. In some cases where international travel can be problematic, faculty telephone interviews will be arranged with international applicants."

Based on that information, it would be suprising if any decisions have been made. Can you say how the admission decision was received? I have checked my online account and can see no indication of a field, link, or section where the decisions may be posted.

You can search the "results search" part of this website to see whenever anyone reports they've heard from MIT BE.

Also, I can vouch personally that at least a few interview invites have been sent out. They probably didn't send out all the invites at once, and I'm sure more will come out mid/late Feb, like they say on the website.

As for the rest of the information on that website, the interview date is definitely March 8/9. However, I was notified of my interview by email; I don't see anything on my online application.

  7. Congratulations, I got my UG degree in that particular BE department. It's a very forward thinking program and depending on what you want to do, some of the professors are just outstanding. I'm fairly close with a number of the faculty there so if you, or anyone else, have any questions, I can try to answer them to give recommendations to fit your interests.

Thanks! Yeah, the department does seem very forward-thinking, and I'm definitely looking forward to my visit. I don't have questions yet, but I'm sure I will as the visit gets closer.

    @banksy, @flat_rhino

I'm going to be at northwestern ibis feb 11/12!

  8. So you got an interview at UW? I got my rejection from Immunology on the 20th. My GPA and general GRE weren't as strong as yours, though. I also didn't take the subject test.

I'm glad all of your are as crazy about checking out the results of others as me. If you guys didn't exist, I would think I was completely nuts to be so nervous.

yeah i did, i got the phone call last week.

  9. cheers everyone! time for me to stop lurking, i guess.

Undergrad Institution: top large public research university
    Major(s): bioengineering
    Minor(s): maybe math
    GPA in Major: 3.80
    Overall GPA: 3.89
Position in Class: fairly close to the top, not sure
    Type of Student: domestic female

    GRE Scores (revised/old version):
    Q: 169 (98%)
    V: 170 (99%)
    W: 4.5 (73%)
Biochem: let's just say... not good.

Research Experience: a little over 2 years in a school lab and one summer research program, doing research related to my interests. no publications, a couple poster sessions

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's List every quarter, Phi Beta Kappa, Tau Beta Pi, bioengineering departmental scholarship, other school scholarships, study abroad scholarship

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: student mentor, self-employed math tutor

Any Miscellaneous Accomplishments that Might Help: demonstrated interest/activities in service and social issues, including a couple activities related to engineering/science.

Special Bonus Points: i'm a girl but that will probably only matter for the engineering programs, if at all.

Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: taken extra computer science and other technical classes. i think my recommendations were all strong, and i'm happy with the SOPs i submitted, but who knows.

    Applying to Where:

Northwestern University, Interdepartmental Biological Sciences (IBiS)

University of Washington, Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB)
University of Texas at Austin, Cellular and Molecular Biology (CMB)

    Rockefeller University

    UC Berkeley, Bioengineering

    Boston University, Biomedical Engineering

    MIT, Biological Engineering

    University of Pennsylvania, Bioengineering

i'm interested in systems and synthetic biology, computational biology, genomics, bioinformatics, evolution, and microbiology/infectious disease. might seem a little random but i think i made it work in my SOP and it was specific enough for me to narrow down my initially ginormous list of schools (though as i read different forums i discover new grad programs that sound interesting. maybe if i don't get in anywhere this round i'll look them up, haha. let's hope not).

things have been going good for me so far, i was relieved to get a couple interview invites. i made a couple mistakes on my apps, including one i was sure was going to sink me for UW, but they didn't seem to hurt me too much after all. if anyone is feeling bad about their bio/biochem subject test score i'm sure i could make you feel better (PM me if you want).

i hope i get more good news and i'll be disappointed if i don't, but i can't wait for the interviews i do have! i alternate between imagining how fun they'll be and obsessively checking forums and results for news about the programs i haven't heard back from.

good luck everyone, this next month will be nuts.
