  1. Hi Vt--

I understand the "moving" pains. Like you, I'm ready to dive into the Fall semester. I arrived in DE a couple of weeks ago and am slowly building a routine. Fall books are arriving slowly in the mail.

Have you settled into life in Philadelphia yet? What does your Fall schedule look like?

  2. From what I've researched, most schools want SOPs somewhere between 1 - 3 pages.

I was wondering how many words / what percentage of this people are dedicating to illuminating various aspects of one's application. For example:

    Personal background, history (general)

    Academic history and (previous) scholarship

    Prospective research projects

    Foreign language experience

    Work experience

    What else am I missing?

    Hi KDavid ---

    I sent you a PM.

  3. Guys,

I have just learnt that I recieve a 3-year funding package from Santa Barbara. However, I do not know what "3-year" means, in other words what will happer after 3 years. Will I run out of money for the coming years? Could you please enlighten me about this "3-year funding package"?

From what I understand, you will need to explore additional forms of funding opportunities, both internal and external from the department. They may still give you the option to TA after the end of your third year, though these slots for TAing may be competitive. I suggest contacting the DGS and ask how students support themselves after their third year. Also, try to get in touch with current grad students and ask them about their experiences in obtaining additional funding.

  4. Has anyone heard from Georgetown, George Washington, Maryland, George Mason or Notre Dame?

    Hi phdhope...

Like you, I still have heard nothing from Georgetown...no email, no rejection letter waiting for me when I log into their app site. I've contacted the department's grad coordinator for more info and she is looking into it. She indicated that all students should have received notification by now. (maybe a glitch in their system??)

I expect to receive a rejection letter in the next few days because, as hanlin pointed out, all admitted students received notification in February. If you don't hear back from them soon, perhaps give them a call to check on the status of your app.

  5. Exactly what caromd said. I also got 16.5k stipend, and same preferences for housing, please.

From what I gathered so far: don't leave in apartments, leave in houses, and more on the west side of the town?

Also, how convenient would it be to live, for example, in Wilmington, and just commute in with public transport?

Hello. I'm also considering moving to Newark over the summer (from Lakewood, CA). I've emailed back and forth with a few students. They have indicated that a Wilmington commute is very doable. I've looked into grad housing at the university, but haven't been able to really see floor plans, etc. for grad-specific housing. Apartments seem to be in the 700-900 range, but the student who provided that info did not specify whether it was a one or two-bedroom apartment.

Can we keep this thread going?  Especially, information related to Housing Search, living situations, and other F13 applicants who are dealing with this.  When are people planning to house hunt, etc?

I am going to visit Newark next week to meet with faculty and students but also to check out the area and see which neighborhoods look nice and affordable. I agree that it's a good idea to keep the thread active. I'll repost after my visit next week if I learn anything new about the housing situation in Newark.

  6. Hi all. I discovered this site somewhat late in process, and I've been hovering on it ever since.

I applied to Temple as well, should I assume at this point that no news is bad news?

    just pm'd you...

  7. CarrieLe5 and vtstevie, did your unofficial emails have funding info included? I'm waiting on Temple info myself!

CoffeeKofenya, hopefully you will hear from Temple soon! I just received an "official" email from the DGS about ten or so minutes ago. Unfortunately, the DGS still had no news on funding.

  8. After being transferred 5 different times, I got the good news that UConn accepted me for their MA program. The POI there is really great and I hope I can attend.

    Congrats, History Time!!

  9. yeah, I've been able to with two schools so far since i know people who have gotten unofficial emails (in which case i ask if not having received one means I should not expect one), but the waiting is killing me on my other schools and I just want to get this over with...problem is, I can't figure a good way to ask outside of just, "hey I'm impatient, can you just tell me if I'm in already?!"

    I just PM'd you. :)

  10. and this was recently I take it?

be sure to post in here when you get your acceptance so I can know whether or not to get my hopes up!

Yep. I emailed him yesterday and he replied this morning. I'll submit the news when I receive official word. In the meantime, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!!

  11. hey carrie, i see you crossed Temple off of your list and got an unofficial acceptance - did you contact them or they you? i haven't heard anything and am wondering what that means

Hi Vtstevie - I contacted the DGS via email. He replied saying that I would receive an official notice in the next week or two.

  12. CarrieLe5 - I received an e-mail with instructions to check the website, and the link to my decision letter was there (somewhere in the bottom of the status page). Did you get any e-mail of this sort?

Thanks, Heulwen. I haven't received an email directing me to the website yet, but I'll keep an eye out for it.

Congrats on CUNY, by the way. I love NYC and hope you'll enjoy it there.  :)

  13. Georgetown is off my list too. I thought it was a great fit but what do I know right ?

Since I'm only left with Harvard and NYU, and they are presumed rejections, CUNY is my destination. Would anyone mind giving me any tips about living in such a big and expensive city? I can't say I'm not used to urban life (I live in a city with a population of 12 million) but that doesn't keep me from being slightly frightened by the idea of moving to the NYC, especially because I'm an international student - never lived or been in the States before.

.. and oh, I almost forgot, I'm also waiting to hear from Arizona.

Sorry to hear about Georgetown. I was wondering, what was their method of contact? I assume I've been rejected, but I've logged into my GU account and there is no new status update.

  14. Has anyone heard anything about when William & Mary might send out their notices? It looks like they typically send them out near the end of February, but I wanted to check and see if anyone had news.

Also, hugs to those who have received bad news from U of Chicago today. Hang in there!

  15. It was Cornell - you called it!

I really wonder what the situation is with Harvard. A lot of people seem to have heard, but Safferz and telkanuru disagree as to whether the decisions have been finalized...

    Congrats on Cornell!
