  1. Not sure how recently you lived there, but I think it's gotten worse. WMATA is horribly underfunded, and it shows. Unbearable crowding on almost every line; trains incredibly far apart on nights and weekends; constant, crippling construction on the weekends. Not to mention that the metro doesn't cover huge swaths of the city. If you live in the center of DC it's not so bad, but coming in from Virginia was miserable. But I just disliked DC in general; especially the people, the political myopia, the bland homogeneity of people's jobs and interests. I'm sure it had to do with my profession and college network, and I know it's gotten significantly cooler since then. But New York had seeped into my being and I couldn't go back to DC culture.

  2. My interview (which I forgot to upload to the results page) was very informal, and my POI indicated that professors have no input with the adcom beyond ranking the candidates in their field and submitting that list for consideration. The interviews aren't formally conducted by the adcom but are arranged at each professor's individual initiative. Or at least that's the impression I got. So your POI could have chosen not to conduct interviews for whatever reason. I wouldn't presume that if you haven't gotten an interview you're out of the running.

The fact that professors at Harvard apparently are only able to rank candidates prompts me to wonder how this works across schools. Does the admissions committee typically make decisions with minimal input from other professors? How many professors are on the committee? How does this affect a given professor's ability to advocate for any given candidate?

  3. My Penn status changed from incomplete to complete on 1/16 and I haven't gotten a call yet either. I'm starting to think efforts to find logic and order in all of this are, at the very least, not the most productive use of time (although I can't seem to stay away from here!)
