  1. I haven't heard anything regarding funding from them either. Neither has my friend who also got into MIT, so we're all in the same boat Funding does seem likely though, based off the generic info on their websites. Although some forums here about Stanford EE PhD make me worry... http://mse.stanford.edu/prospective/graduate_students/financial_aid.html http://dmse.mit.edu/academics/graduate/funding
  2. A lot of admitted students probably can't make visit weekends, especially schools that only offer one. Schools offer to come visit them on a separate date if the visit weekend doesn't work, so I'm guessing they would be glad to have later admits visit on a separate date. Only downside is they organize some events for that specific weekend, and travel is covered (which also might be the case for later visits). But at the end of the day, (probably) the most important aspect is meeting faculty, and you will get that during any visit.
  3. Berkeley's deadline for RSVPing to their Visit Weekend (3/7-3/10) for admitted students is this Sunday. So they might not be admitting more until after the visit weekend and people start making decisions. Based on the results search, it seems Berkeley spreads out when they admit people, sometimes it's pretty late. They mentioned having 500 applications and are limited to admitting 6%.
  4. No Northwestern mail for me either, but I did get the email! Anyone planning to visit 4/4-4/7?
  5. The semi-personal email I got mentioned to meet him during the visit weekend, so maybe professors actively seeking grad students sent them out? But I probably won't respond till the visit either, I always stress over emailing professors. My background is with magnetic thin films (undergrad) and magnetic biomaterials (the summer/fall since I've graduated). I'm hoping to stick with magnetic and/or oxide thin films. I'm probably going to request meeting Wang, McIntyre, Sinclair, and Harris (affiliated faculty). How about your interest/background? My friend mentioned he had a great time talking to McGehee when he visited Stanford last year, I wish I knew something about photovoltaics. And you're right, Friday night was mentioned in the original email, I can't read...
  6. Hey airdonut, do you know which Stanford faculty you're planning to meet with? I'm interested in Shan Wang and Paul McIntyre, not really sure after that. And did you know they were planning to keep us in a hotel both nights? I booked my tickets before I got the email from Fi yesterday, so I'm leaving 6am Saturday morning, woops...
  7. Yea I got two emails as well, first from Angelita Mireles and second from Dr. Antoine Allanore, whose research doesn't align with my interests either. I wasn't going to respond until you brought this up, so thanks. I'm still not sure what I would say, so please let me now how you plan on dealing with it My friend who also got in received an email from a professor she met with during the application period before the Angelita Mireles email last night, so her personal email was at least from a POI. And I almost forgot, Congrats!!
  8. Good for MIT to look past purely gpa. There's plenty of factors that can explain a non-4.0 gpa, shouldn't get in the way of a good research candidate
  9. Hmm, maybe Oura read your email too quickly and didn't see the part on funding? If not, that was a bit rude on Oura's part.
  10. I haven't, but the initial admission email they sent said: "Nearly 100% of Materials students are supported on Research Assistantships" And on the UCSB Materials website it states: "Students admitted to the Materials Department are appointed as Graduate Student Researchers (GSR) and are generally supported by funds from research grants and contracts obtained by Department faculty. Currently, the GSR appointments include an annual stipend of $28,000 plus payment of registration, tuition, and health insurance fees." http://www.materials.ucsb.edu/costs.php But yea, it would be nice if they directly informed us instead of speculating
  11. Yea Stanford's MSE admits is up to 6 it seems. Anybody visiting 2/14? And anyone get funding info from them?
  12. I have not contacted any professors either, although most of my friends have, albeit for different departments/schools. Not contacting professors hasn't hurt my application yet, but I'm only speaking from a limited personal experience. I guess it depends on the school/department. I read on the FAQ page for a few programs that they did not recommend directly contacting professors during the application period, but my undergraduate research adviser said it couldn't hurt. Sorry I guess I didn't answer definitively in one direction, but at least you're not alone in not contacting profs!
  13. I can't tell you how much time I've wasted on that results page searching different spellings of each school, lols. Late jan / early feb can't come soon enough...
  14. Hey I got into UCSB too, during the second round of admissions this past week. Congrats. Which faculty members are you thinking of scheduling your interviews with for Recruitment Weekend? I'm thinking of Chris Palmstrom and Susanne Stemmer as my top two, and maybe Ram Seshadri. I'm leaning very heavily towards UCSB as well, so I'll probably see you around Feb 28.
  15. UCSB sent an email yesterday asking to register for their recruitment weekend by Jan 21 with faculty preferences so they can setup interviews. But recruitment weekend isn't until Feb 28 - March 2, so after Jan 21, I think they could still inform some people in the next few weeks. I don't think it'll take that much time to organize interviews...
  16. Looks like UCSB also started sending out emails. Wish I got one, really hoping to work with Prof. Palmstrom or Prof. Seshadri... Hey foreverfree, are you the other UIUC Hamer fellow that posted on the results page? Congrats, I got the email a couple days back too, just posted today. I submitted my app right at the deadline (Jan. 1) if that helps anyone
