  1. HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY! I called the program assistant at Rutgers and she checked my file (which had just been returned to her this morning), and I have been recommended for admission. Even if Penn, NYU, and Columbia don't want me, at least Rutgers does!

  2. Info on Columbia decisions:

We are actively making admissions decisions. Decision letters will be mailed to applicants starting April 1, 2006 and continuing through April 7, 2006. Below is a tentative schedule:

M.S. Program - decision letters will be mailed April 1, 2006.

    M.S. International Program - decision letters will be mailed April 5 & 6, 2006.

    M.A. Program - decision letters will be mailed April 6 & 7, 2006.

Ph.D. Program - decision letters will be mailed April 1, 2006.

    Good luck!

  3. Has anyone who is applying to Columbia seen this page?

    https://admissions.columbia.edu/

I have been trying to check my status from the applyyourself page, but of course they have no info on admissions there. You can request an applicant ID and check your status. Does this apply to the j-school as well? It's not publicized (to my knowledge) on the j-school site, so it might be for other programs.

  4. Yay! My rejection letter from NYU has finally arrived (Media Ecology Ph.D.). I knew that I would not get in, so it was a matter of waiting around for the inevitable to arrive. Time to now focus my positive thinking on getting into Rutgers :-)

  5. Has any1 heard from Rutgers .Im still waiting on Rutgers n at this point of time my endurance is really wearing thin...........

The secretary says that the committee STILL hasn't made decisions regarding my area of focus in SCILS. Rutgers is my only hope, so I am on pins and needles to find out their decision.

  6. Thanks everyone!

New School gave me $6,102 in a tuition scholarship. I checked FAFSA and it told me I won't get any grants because I am working on a graduate degree. This is odd to me. Shouldn't I get SOMETHING from them besides a loan? My EFC is $0. I don't know if I can take out enough loans to pay off the rest of the tuition AND live in NYC. I'm not feeling too optimistic right now... :?

That's the same situation that I was in; I had to take out the maximum amount of loans just to cover the tuition and work full time :-(

  7. misfit, I have offers from New school and rutgers. the later with full funding, .. but like the others, yet to get funding info from new school. What would you suggest?

any body else with some words???

I'll elaborate a bit on my other reply...if both programs are an equally suitable fir to your research and academic interests, I'd honestly go with the school that gives a better financial aid package! Unless you really have your heart set on living in NYC, but Rutgers is only a 45 minute train ride away so you can always visit regularly.

Sometimes you have to make the decision between a program that gives you more money but doesn't have as strong of an emphasis on your interests, versus less money but a program better tailored to you.

I think that partly depends on your area of interests...which school do you think is a better fit?

  9. I called Rutgers today to see if my application had been reviewed yet, since last week it was in process. The very nice secretary informed me that it was still under review, but that this is their spring break week and the faculty are pretty much MIA this week.

Damn you, spring break! Damn you to hell! *shakes fist*

  10. My mail has not been delivered in two days. I think my mail carrier is scared of me because as soon as I hear them leave the building, I run downstairs to look for letters.

The mail carrier also has a habit of stuffing my mail in the box in such a manner that magazines and thin letters, such as refund checks, get ripped. I don't really care if the cover of my Vegetarian Times gets torn, but my refund check for this semester was nearly ripped in half!

  11. To those of you who are graduate students in NYC, how do you make it work financially? Where do you live? Do you take out loans? Use up your inheritance? Survive on Ramen noodles? Or just spend all your waking hours in the library so as not to expend any extra income? Just wondering. . .

My only financial aid was a small scholarship that barely put a dent into my tuition (no stipend or fellowship), so I worked full-time to pay rent, etc. I started working part-time and had to take out extra loans to cover my expenses.

I think that there is a maximum amount of loan money that you can take out per year, which is not a problem in most areas of the country but can be limiting when living in NYC.

  12. I'm considering attending Rutgers and would like to know a little bit about New Brunswick if any one has any info. Where are the good areas to find an apartment? How's the mass transit? Should I bring my car (I might no matter what - I don't know if I can survive without it)? I'm from a fairly small (130,000), albeit university town - College Station, home of those insane Aggies if anyone wants any info about it from me - so it's probably impossible for it to be more dull than where I'm from. Any info and general impressions you could provide would be much appreciated.

I used to live near New Brunswick (Edison to be exact), and I too am applying to Rutgers and will hopefully be accepted and move back to that area. NB is basically a college town, so parking can be difficult and some of the neighborhoods aren't the greatest of areas. Highland Park is a small town directly next to NB; it is a really cute area but it can be more expensive. If you can bring a car, by all means do it. It is convenient since a lot of shopping areas are spread out over Middlesex county.

NB has some great restaurants and bars. I am crossing my fingers that I get accepted so that I can move back and enjoy all the great Indian restaurants once again!

  13. Vince-

It was a "lovely" (ha!) letter via the US Postal Service that arrived on Saturday. I am not an international application (I just live close to Philly, so the letter arrived very quickly).

  14. Oooooh yes.... (apologies for people who have heard me say this a million times on other forums!). I applied to Ph.D. programs at:

    U Penn-Annenberg

    Rejected

    Columbia

No word, likely won't hear back until after April 1st (so htey say)

    NYU

They said notifications won't be made until at least March 15th

    Rutgers

I have the most realistic chance of getting into this program. Hope to hear from them in mid March

  15. Someone posted on this site that they received an acceptance for the MA program. I called on Friday and they said that they have made no decisions yet for the Ph.D. and that letters will go out in mid to late March.
