I have already emailed a professor who I hope to do research with but will contacting graduate admissions help secure a possible TA or RA position?

I have applied to a few of the top schools (MIT, Berkeley, ect.) for a masters degree in mechanical engineering. Do schools do interviews for the masters programs? and if so is it a bad sign if other students are being offered interviews and have not not?
