  1. Thanks so much for this advice lightswitch!!

    Congrats, lady rainicorn!!!

There are plenty of fellowships out there, if you take the time to dig deep and identify the ones that fit your profile. By profile I mean, your citizenship, your hometown, home state, socioeconomic background, ethnicity, ancestry, gender, sexual orientation, undergraduate institution, exact area of study, research interests, international experience/language skills, etc. A lot of funds are restricted in one way or another, so I have found it incredibly beneficial to target my search and have had great results over the years. (For example, one year, my scholarship applications fell through and I was short about $4000 for summer housing and sent out letters to 15+ U.S. organisations based on my citizenship/ancestry, and within a few weeks I was offered free summer housing in downtown Manhattan, so I could do my internship. Sure, I come from a very low-income background, so I have done my fair share of begging throughout college--but have come across very-very generous individuals and organizations.)

Good starting points are the lists of outside fellowships that most schools actually publish on their websites. I'm sure if you ask any of the financial aid offices you're in touch with, they'll be happy to help you and provide a list. Most large $10,000+ fellowships had deadlines in the fall, so you might want to keep that in mind for your second year of grad school. But I'm sure you'll be able to find a bunch of smaller awards to apply for now, if you aren't missing gigantic sums after your institutional grants.

I am not a U.S. citizen, so I wouldn't know about the money out there that's restricted to citizens (most of it), but here are a few $10,000+ ones: Cooke, AAUW (for women), Kinley, PEO (for women).

  2. Does anyone have information on scholarships or grants for MFA Visual Art candidates? I've received a pretty great financial offer from one of the schools but still have some money to come up with. Are most of you planning on taking out loans to cover the costs? I've been researching endlessly online and haven't found any scholarship opportunities to even apply to! I thought there'd be more options for graduate school funding but it seems like the majority of scholarships are for undergraduate work. WTF!

  3. I just got wait listed at Cornell the other day by email, but I haven't had a chance to check out the campus. If anyone has been there, could they tell me what they thought of the sculpture faculty/facilities? Thanks

Hey! I went to the Cornell campus, it's really beautiful - got a real Ivy League school feel (like from the movies) and big gorges with waterfalls tucked away. I'm almost positive I'll be going there next year. Just waiting on hearing from RISD first. They have the Rand Fabrication Hall with 3d printers, laser cutters, a great woodshop & I believe welding. It's huge & I think really geared towards the architecture students. There are one or two kilns in the shop but no real ceramics department. There's a foundry which is temporarily closed for renovations so I didn't see it.

I just emailed with Carl & he said they got funding to bring in 6 high profile artists over the next 6 semesters and are also working on hiring 2 new faculty. They're really friendly over there so you might want to email with specific questions about sculpture!

  4. She didnt actually say she "disliked" the other pieces. If I remember correctly, she said she really enjoyed one of the pieces because, unlike the rest, that one wasn't as literal. I guess in my mind I took it as she disliked the others.

I'm leaning towards Massart, but SMFA seemed to really emphasize the fact that they give a lot of opportunities to their grad alumni. One of the admission tour guides said he didnt apply to Massart because they basically spit out their students once you have graduated, not really creating a lasting relationship with them. Of course, his opinion is probably super biased.

Facilities have never been a big issue to me, I've primarily worked at home on my own, but I am interested in Massart's pouring and weaving facilities. Do you feel as if Massart's program is well rounded between technique and contemporary art theory/criticism?

Both schools seem wonderful, but it was a little hard to take SMFA seriously. Their entire interview day felt like a wine and dine experience, it was impossible to figure out how much of it was genuine. Thank you for such an informative post :)

    Hi there!

I'm a Mass Art grad, for undergrad, I loved my time there. I disagree with Mass Art spitting out their grads, especially since the grad program is so small. SMFA takes 50 students per year, with a total of 100 graduate students. Mass Art has a higher faculty to student ratio and the faculty stays there longer. You could find out who is tenured at each school too.

I interviewed at SMFA and both the faculty member and grad student hadn't seen my work before. They asked me questions that were evident from my essay and resume and I felt like it wasn't very personal. Made me hesitant about the school..

  5. Thanks for all the feed back on years taken off or not taken off before MFA. You all had some great reasons for your decision to now...i'm sure you know that already though. This is my second time for applications. I think it's great for those of you who have wait for this and for those who are up to the challenge -- fresh meat from bfa/ba degrees. In the end it all comes down to the portfolio and purpose. It's been nice to hear about people receiving good feed back, acceptances. I hope to be as lucky.

    RISD - interview 3/7

    VCU --

    Notre Dame--

    Syracuse --

    Cranbrook --

    Tyler --

How was your interview at RISD? What department did you meet with? I'll be there on Monday for an interview with the painting department..

  6. It seems that someone got interview notification from risd?

cause I search the result of 'risd photography' and there are an interview notification posted by someone....

anyone here got that from risd (photography)?

    Hi Vaneiris,

I was one of the people with an interview from RISD but it's in painting. Haven't heard about photo yet but would imagine they'd contact you soon. Might be time to give a friendly call to admissions...

  7. Hi all! Just interviewed at Tyler. Really loved visiting, but don't want to get my hopes up too much. Thought it went well, but who knows.

    So...

Has anyone interviewed at Cornell? The description of the interview process is making me nervous: "The interview consists of about 20 minutes for you to present your work, and a 20-25 minute period to discuss your work with faculty and current MFA students. Our plan is for this process to be relaxed and a casual exchange..."

Anyone have any experience with this sort of interview format? Or interviewing specifically at Cornell? I'm so much more comfortable in a Q&A setting... this scares me!

Best of luck to you all, exciting to see the acceptances coming in :)

I just interviewed at Cornell yesterday. It was a really laid back process. I had prepared a 20 min lecture about my work. I think they were looking for something a little less formal but I made sure to stop and ask if there were questions along the way and they did ask some. It lasted about 45mins in total. I was asked several questions at the end then asked them several.

The questions were specific to my work, so just be prepared to talk about your concepts, processes, what drives you and where you see yourself going. They seem to want some openness or willingness to explore other concepts to a degree. I was asked about that because my work is pretty focused in it's concept.

Everyone was really nice! Let me know if you have any questions.

  8. Maxine -

I see you got an interview at SUNY Purchase. When did they notify you? I haven't heard anything from them!

They contacted me on February 15th via email. I responded and said I couldn't interview for a while bc I was on vacation. I'm still waiting for them to get back in touch to schedule the phone interview.

  9. Hi everyone!

I can't believe how close everything is coming - interviews, decisions, rejections, etc. It's been quite an obsessive roller coaster ride. I'm interested to find out if anyone knows how many people Cornell is interviewing. Also, I'm going to be speaking to a friend who went to RISD to get the inside scoop on the interview process there and will post what she told me. I've updated my list of schools to show what I've heard back so far - got 3 rejections and 6 interviews (I went a little overboard on applying to schools!)

Something that I've been preparing for interviews at my schools is looking at all the grad faculty work, keeping a list of what it looks like and then I project how it relates to my work. I'm going to use this info as an answer for when they ask why I am interested in their program.

This forum has been so helpful. Thank you to everyone who's been posting and contributing :)

  10. ok, with Rutgers, UCLA and UCI all interviewing/admitting this is officially my least favorite day of waiting! c'mon!!!

Hi hoping for the best! I am interviewing with cornell on tuesday and was hoping to get the inside scoop from you. Also, I'll be interviewing with RISD on Monday March 4th and 4:30 pm for painting. Anyone already been for those interviews yet?

    Hi there,

I'm a MA based artist too. Thought about applying to the UMASS programs but didn't end up. Wondering if you visited them and what you thought of them. I'm visiting Rutgers & Purchase on February 4th and can let you know about what they are like. I visited RISD and SMFA and loved what I saw there. RISD students were very excited and happy with the program, there was a great sense of community there. Everyone said they couldn't believe how nice each other was. They also seemed to be working very hard.

I went to SMFA right before Thanksgiving so it wasn't very crowded but everyone I spoke with seemed really pleased with the school. I love the elective based programming they have there, I'm hoping to expand into different media while at grad school so it would be perfect for me. The only downfall is that the studios are small - 9'X9'.

Mass Art is awesome! I went there for undergrad and would have applied to the grad program but feel like that's not encouraged. Also Vermont Studio Center is absolutely amazing, I was just there in August and had the time of my life :)

  12. Hi everyone!

It's so nice to have a space to talk about the admissions and acceptance process for schools. I've applied for the 2013 school year to programs that are interdisciplinary or in painting if I had to choose. I can't believe people are hearing back for interviews already. Like everyone else, I've been obsessing over school choices and checking my email so I decided to join the forum to get up to the minute news on what's happening.

I'll be checking in frequently :) Good luck to everyone!

    The list for me:

    RISD

    SMFA

    UCONN

    Rutgers

    SUNY Purchase

    Tyler

    Cornell

    Bard
