  1. I had a minor breakdown on Friday when I saw the UNC HPM acceptances on the results page. I'm pretty much assuming no news on Friday means rejection.
  2. I thought the same, but I did not receive an auto-email when my JHSPH status changed.
  3. Someone just posted that they were accepted to UNC HMP via phone... Anyone want to claim that? Did you call them, or did they call you?
  4. Just about had a heart attack.. I checked the results page for UNC, and there is an acceptance for Health Policy and Management... Masters.
  5. Same here. Haven't been accepted anywhere yet, but have had several interviews, and near the top of the waitlist for one of the best programs in my field. My undergrad gpa is abyssmal, and my master's program didn't do gpas. My verbal GRE is pretty good, math is good in terms of score but only OK for the percentile. But... I have nearly six years of full time research experience in the field at a well respected university, including multiple publications (one as first author), and more than a million dollars in grant funding awarded to my research group since I joined the grant writing group. I've worked with investigators in all over my university, and at other institutions nationwide, so I have really good recommendations. I really good personal statement goes a long way.
  6. During my Hopkins interview, she asked me if I applied to UNC (since I work there), and why choose Hopkins over UNC. I answered honestly - both programs are appealing for different reasons, then I refocused on the reasons I applied to Hopkins.
  7. hmm... I'm going to go with it's just the two of us
  8. You can definitely live in Carrboro and get to/from campus without driving daily. The buses are fare free, and the routes are generally laid out to serve apartment complexes. There are also several routes serving areas of town with more single family homes. I currently live on one of the far edges of Carrboro, and my commute is 20 minutes from my front door to my desk at the UNC med school. I've also been known to walk home from work when the weather is nice (it takes an hour to get from UNC to the far edge of Carrboro on foot, closer to 30 minutes if you're only going down town).
  9. I got more information from Hopkins. They had 37 applicants for the Health Services Research track, and were only able to accept 3. During my interview they mentioned that their AHRQ training grant was up for renewal, and they weren't sure if/when/how much would get funded. They use the training grant to fund most of their PhD applicants. The professor I interviewed with emailed to give me the waitlist details. She said I was very high on the list, and she was optomistic that they would be able to offer admission and funding from the training grant. She didn't outright say it, but I reading between the lines that they haven't secured the training grant renewal yet, but couldn't put off admissions decisions anymore, so they only admitted as many students as they can support with existing internal scholarships and fellowships. If/when they get the AHRQ funding, they will admit more (I hope). In other news, my interview with South Carolina went very well. Still no news from UNC.
  10. I just checked the Hopkins applyyourself page, and saw that my decision was available. Waitlisted. I'm not really sure how to feel. Hopkins was a stretch for me, so I was stunned/thrilled when I got the interview invite. I don't have any sense of how many people they accepted, or how many are on the waitlist. I feel like I need to wait at least until Monday to call, since they haven't even sent a notification to check the website yet... Does anyone has a sense of how likely it is to get accepted from the waitlist? I still haven't heard anything from UNC. They are my absolute first choice, and I was hoping to have something definitive from Hopkins before calling UNC to check on my application. I do have an interview with South Carolina next week. The program isn't as well known as UNC or Hopkins, but I specifically want to study rural health, and they have one of the few federally designated rural health research centers in the US, and the only one with a health disparities concentration.
  11. I hate SOPHAS with a burning passion. I only had only application through SOPHAS, but it's my safety school, so I had to do it. It took two hours to type in every.single.class I've taken, and it still takes them four weeks to calculate their own version of a gpa which totally disregarded the upper/lower division information I provided? WTF? At least their calculated gpa was 0.15 points higher than my real gpa. Their recommendation letter systems sucks too. Why isn't their a built in reminder email? One of my letter writters in particular is much more responsive to official auto-emails than he is to my nagging. SOPHAS also makes it really difficult to enter degree information if you have more than one degree from the same institution. I have two degrees and a certificate from one school. It wasn't clear if I should enter the school separately for each degree, or once for the full 12 year time period then add each degree earned. I emailed SOPHAS, and they said either was fine. I'm a survey design geek - you should NEVER set up a data collection system where "either way is fine." All that, and $120 for one school... applyyourself was a dream in comparison.
  12. Hi all, I've been lurking for a while, and figured I'd jump in now. I'm waiting to hear from UNC and Hopkins for Health Policy PhD. I had an interview with Hopkins last week (Health Services Research track), but haven't heard anything from UNC. I currently work for the med school at UNC, but get a lot of SPH news through the grad students in my office. I have more ties with the epid department than policy. Word around here is that UNC epid accepted too many PhD students during the last few cycles, and now are having a hard time pairing students with faculty. I think the problem is mostly in cancer epid. As for housing in CH/Carrboro, it really isn't too difficult. The bus system makes it very easy, and if you don't mind driving a few miles to a park and ride lot, you can branch out to the southern Durham area.
