  1. How bad is "bad" when it comes to undergraduate GPAs and PhD applications? 2.99 and below? 2.75?

Aren't the AdComs only supposed to look at the last 60 hours?

From what I hear they do only look at the last 60 credits, I thought if I had a masters and 5 year work experience in the field would help. I feel like research experience trumps work experience any day. I did get into a MPP program at Georgia tech though. I deferred though because CMU wanted me to sit in on a class to see how i performed before making a commitment. So that is what I will be doing in the fall.

  2. Hey Mav,

I got into delaware they gave me a 16k stipend and tuition waiver. I applied to the phd program in energy and environmental policy. what program did you apply to? I have not visited yet, but I will try. I dont think I will go since the scholarship they gave me is only for 1 year (my contact said that is almost guaranteed that I will get at least that amount every year but i need something a little better than a  almost guarantee).

  3. Just heard from maryland, they rejected me. I though I had a real shot with them since I had 3 very long conversations with 3 professors I was interested in doing research with. I guess having lots of work experience does not make up for having any research experience.

So far I have only gotten into University of Delaware for Energy and Enviornmental Policy, does anyone know how high this program is ranked. I cant seem to find anything online.

My only hope now is Ga tech. I am keeping my fingers crossed since I spoke to the PI twice on the phone and visited to school to meeting with the head of the department.

I havent heard anything from CMU but based on what tmj said, i am counting that as a rejection.

    TMJ,

you have so many opinions from alot of top programs. it must be hard to decide between CMU, RAND, and Maryland. From what i hear about CMU they are kinda funny with funding. they only fund people for the first year and then try kinda expect you to find external funding. maryland seems cool since it is right in the dc area but you are right it is kinda expensive. pittsburgh is dirt cheap.

  4. I don't think you should worry yet. I have also not heard from CMU and I emailed admissions with another question about 3 weeks ago and they hadn't even started reviewing files yet. As I recall, tmj was a bit of a special case with his proposed topic (am I right tmj?) and heard back even before my email. Hopefully they start coming out this week though!

EPP?  They definitely started reviewing files, as there were something like 8 other students there visiting with me; we had the option of two visit dates in their email (the other date was 3/22).  I assume that travmatic applied to EPP and not Heinz as energy policy would fit better into EPP, and if not, that they would've forwarded the application to EPP.

My topic was somewhat special, in that the primary project of interest required a strong physics background (also, I am female), but there were many  students who had multiple options for research projects who visited with me.

Yea i def applied to EPP and not heinz. Typically they admitt only 20 people a year. If this is the case then it isnt looking good for me.

    giants,

did you apply for heinz or epp?

  5. I already visited CMU, so I'm guessing it's not good news if you haven't heard from them yet.  I haven't heard anything from Maryland yet despite having had the phone interview last week (which sounded like an atypical request for an interview).

I got an email from them.  No clue if you can tell from the website...  Congrats on the Evans acceptance though!

    hey tmj,

I am local so i visted CMU in october and i met with about 4 professors. When you visited was it for like an accepted students thing or was it to pair you with someone? I looked at the results page from previous years and i noticed that most acceptances came before march 20th so i am keeping my fingers crossed, but it doesnt sound good so far :(

  6. I am local to the pittsburgh area and i hear mixed things about CMUs funding issues.  Generally they only guarantee the first year of funding for a PhD student, then you are pretty much on your own. Your advisor has to find funding for you or you have to get it yourself. Some students say it isnt an issue some say its really hard at times. I really hope i get into CMU, that is my dream school. I got rejected last year, hopefully i get better luck this year.

  7. I am looking into a PhD policy program with a concentration in energy policy.

    I applied to the following:

    Duke - Enviornmental Policy

CMU - Engineering and Public Policy

University of Maryland - Energy Policy

    Georgia Tech - Energy Policy

    University of Delaware - ENEP

My undergrad GPA sucked, it was a 2.84, I have a background in computer engineering from RPI specifically and I have a masters in industrial engineering from UPitt, my GPA was a bit better, ending with a 3.54. I have 5 years of work experience in the energy field. I hope they will over look my poor UG GPA since it was about 6 years ago. My top choice is CMU, I went for a visit in october. Maryland, Ga Tech, and CMU seem interested in what i want to research, but some of the professors I spoke with arent on the first round admissions committee.  SInce I hear Duke alread sent out interviews I guess I will chalk that up as a loss so far.
