  1. let me open that question up then: which school hass the better and more stimulating intellectual environment?
  2. I keep hearing that it is impossible to get a job unless you are attending a top 25 university. Right now I am having a difficult time making a decision because of the rankings of the schools I have been accepted to. My top two schools right now are UBC and UCalgary (they both fit my research interests). I have a substantially higher funding package at UCalgary and the department seems to be expanding (especially in the field I am interested in), whereas the department at UBC is continually cutting things - hence why my funding there is less. However, I cannot help but think I will never get a job unless I go to UBC for my Doctorate, since, while it is not top 25, it is top 50. Calgary is only in the top 200, so I am guessing it would be near impossible for me to ever get hired if I attend. Then again, the school does have an aggressive initiative to improve it's ranking over the next 5 years. I really like the idea of going somewhere different for my PhD than my Master's (I did my Master's at UBC) and the funding is better, but I am still struggling because of the rank. Does anyone have any advice for me?
  3. Thanks, guys. I am still having an extremely difficult time deciding. I really like the look of the program at Calgary, and I am talking with potential supervisors, but I am really worried about it being so low ranking. It will be a tough decision.
  4. Both of those schools are a great fit for my research - the department at UBC is much larger, although there are the same number of instructors in my field at both schools. I have looked at the class listings and the courses at Calgary appear to be more diverse. However, UBC is ranked no. 2 (or 3) in Canada whereas Calgary is ranked much lower. And I cannot seem to find anywhere rankings by department or field. I did email my current supervisors to ask for their input as well.
  5. Thank you guys! Right now I am leaning towards UBC and Calgary, they are the best fits for me. It is mostly a struggle because UBC seems to be more reputable but in the process of downsizing/cutting back, yet Calgary is less reputable but has very active expansion initiatives right now.
  6. I am trying to decide between 4 Canadian graduate schools: McGill, U of T, UBC, and Calgary. My best offer (by far) came from Calgary but it is the lowest in rank. Any advice?
  7. Hi all, I apologize if this has been covered before. How do schools respond to "incomplete" applications? I checked the online status of a couple of my applications and noticed that materials never made it to the admissions office. I perhaps incorrectly went under the assumption that the department would contact me if I was missing things before they started the admissions process; however, I know for a fact these schools have started admitting/rejecting people and on my application status online it just says "incomplete application". Will they still review it if there are materials missing, or just go on to all of the other candidates? Thanks!
