MPP decision: Heinz ($28K) vs. GPPI ($20K) vs. GWU (full ride)
Flyers1 replied to MTJ's topic in Government Affairs Forum
My advice is to take the full ride + assistantship from GW. I really think that people underemphasize the importance of coming out of grad school with as little debt as possible. GPPI and Heinz are both great programs, but I don't think that they will give you an extremely significant leg up in terms of jobs/career after school over what you will get from GW. There is a BIG difference between 35K in debt and 70K-90K in debt. If you really want to do research, as it sounds like you do, then having an assistantship should be viewed as a huge bonus. If I were in your shoes, there is very little chance I would turn down the GW offer. -
American SPA vs. GWU Trachtenberg for MPA
Flyers1 replied to IshmaelRaheem's topic in Government Affairs Forum
The impression that I have is that GW's reputation is better in DC but I am certainly planning on asking around while I am down there. I will be at the Saturday admitted students day for GW. If you will be there and want to talk send me a private message. For me, it is the combination of money, reputation, location that gave the edge to GW. -
American SPA vs. GWU Trachtenberg for MPA
Flyers1 replied to IshmaelRaheem's topic in Government Affairs Forum
I applied to both programs and was accepted at both, but got more funding from GW so that is likely the deciding factor for me. My advice is to go to the admitted student days and ask lots of good questions. I would imagine you are likely to get a similar experience from both schools, but if there is a specific subset field you are most interested in it would be good to get first hand accounts from current students and faculty on how your interests match with the program. I know that's not that helpful, but I really think that both of these schools will be great so you can't make a bad choice! -
Turned down GPPI because of the money factor so anyone who was waitlisted, I hope you are offered the spot. Going to GW admitted students day on Saturday and am leaning very heavily towards attending for my MPA. Can't wait!

Anyone on here going to the Saturday admitted students day on March 23?
-
Has anyone in the MPA program heard about funding yet?
-
Got the acceptance email today at 5:30 too for the Trachtenberg MPA program. Being considered for funding.
-
Has anyone else contacted GW to find out when they will start sending out decisions?
-
Got the email this morning telling me that I am being considered for scholarships and asking me to submit a 1 page maximum statement about why GPPI "is the place that will best help you fulfill your goals in the public policy field." Submission due by 2/26 at 12 PM.

I heard from American pretty fast too. I think it was less than 3 weeks after I applied in December.
-
I applied to GW also and have not heard back yet. I would imagine if that is what they told you then it must be true despite the fact that it does seem like they have sent out decisions earlier in the past.
-
I got the acceptance email this morning too. No funding info yet, but glad to be able to add it to the accepted column!

Got my GPPI acceptance email this morning

zparo, what makes you say that you think GW Trachtenberg will send out notifications this week?
-
My stats are as follows: Undergrad GPA 3.98, 3 yrs NPO experience, 1 year private sector. GRE 161 V 161 Q 5.5 AW. Phi beta kappa. University honors etc. American said that funding decisions would be mailed out mid-March.

My own preference goes: 1. GW 2. AU 3. GPPI This is mostly based on my desire to do an MPA, not MPP, but I am likely to go wherever I receive the most funding. Anyone else out there who applied to one, two or all three of these programs?
-
Do you have a preference for any of the 3 programs?

Hi everyone! This is my first post and my first time applying to grad school. I applied to three DC area schools for MPA/MPP programs. The schools are American SPA, GW Trachtenberg and Georgetown (GPPI). I have been accepted to American SPA so far and am waiting to hear about funding. Still waiting on decisions from the other two. Anyone hear anything from GW or GPPI yet? It looks like Georgetown has started its first round of acceptances. Thanks in advance!
