  1. Hi guys, I was just notified of my acceptance to Columbia University, French Cultural Studies in Global context. Does anyone know anything about this program? Is it worth going? I mean they did not mention anything on funding and I suppose the tuition stuff can not be very affordable. Advice needed.

  2. Hi everyone, just wanted to let all of you know that I have accepted NYU's offer for the MA, and I'm really excited about it! There was a very slim chance of getting off the wait list at Minnesota, so I put an end to that. To be honest, this year in France has really confirmed my passion for education, as I've been working twice or three times the hours of a normal teaching assistant, and I wouldn't mind starting my career in high school after this degree. That will be another discussion, but for now, I will take a deep breath and celebrate. I hope those with decisions will be able to do the same very shortly!

Congratulations, Patrick! I am really happy for you. I have not heard back from Boston and Penn State, but I kind of give up the two of them.

  3. Congratulations on your acceptance! As Indiana continues to tell me that they currently have no information on funding, UF's offer of assistantship (tuition waiver, health insurance and stipend) and Atkin fellowship ($5,000 just offered to me today) is starting to look like a winner! I'm excited by the prospect, since it's an hour away from my hometown where my family still lives. Perhaps I will see you in the Fall!

Lucky you on the fellowship stuff! They did not offer me such good things. Congrats. I plan to attend this fall there, so if you are sure that you will attend then we definitely will be classmates. We should keep in touch!

  4. Hi there Chase Wang, I did both of my undergrad and master in French, but my previous research concentrated on second language acquisition, and I have already took the intro course in this field. They did not mention the summer support. And I am still considering if I should take this offer. But thanks for keeping me posted.

  5. Yes. Ask them to see if you can set up a visit, so that you can have a talk with a professor(s) that interests you.

Are you in a situation where you have to make a decision right now? I would imagine that you have time at least till April 15.

Does the program at U Florida interest you more than Syracuse does so? What is your research interest?

Is the decision on funding pending? Regardless, I would also make a visit if it is possible.

I don't know anything about those two universities. Yet, visiting helps when what you read is not enough for you to make a big decision.

If you can't make visits, send emails to your potential advisors or those who seem to be doing something similar to what you would like to be doing in the future. They may or may not respond to your emails. But either way, I'd say you've got nothing to lose by doing so.

I need to make a decision within next week for Syracuse, and the funding for UF is still pending. I am kind of worried now. For Syracuse it's Linguistics department I got in while for UF it is French department I got in. But I like both of the programs and I was contacted by both of the POI. And I do like them both. And that makes the decision harder.

  6. Are you currently in US? I think you should make a visit and see for yourself since they will fund you.

Thank you for your quick response. Yes, I am currently in the US. So you mean I should just email them to check if I can go and see? Another thing that really bothers me is that I am also admitted to University of Florida for their French program but not sure if I will be funded there. So I am now really struggled between these two schools. I do not know which one is better.

  7. Hi guys! This is my first post here. I got accepted to Syracuse's linguistics MA program with TA ship and tuition waiver from French department. I just want to know if you guys know about the linguistics program in Syracuse. Is it a good one? I am an international students, so I am not very familiar with the US university rankings. So please give me some advice if you can. Thank you soooo much.

  8. haha, could be!!  :)

Got big news today - emailed the DGS at Duke about the wait list, she emailed me back right away saying I would have "very good news soon" (!!!), and I got an offer letter 2 hours later! I still can't believe I got admitted to Duke! But now, I need to make a decision, and I have always hated making decisions :( I'm thinking about visiting UT Austin and Duke to have a feel of the places and meet with the faculty, but I don't know if I can pull that off as I am in France and won't be able to go from March 22-April 7.... going next week might be tight, but going after the 7th seems a little late

    Congrats, cicada! So exciting.

For me, I am still waiting to hear back from UF, which I had interview with almost three weeks ago!!!Plus, I saw someone posted the acceptance from the same program as me, I start to think maybe they will not offer me an admission. Feel so sad at the moment.

  9. Fingers crossed for you, Fransces :)

I got 3 rejections in a row, this week  Stanford, Brown and now Cornell... looks like I'm headed to Austin, unless I get off the waitlist at Duke...

Thanks, cicada. Sorry to hear about the rejection. But Austin is still a cool place to be. I am still waiting to hear back from UF. Hope they will just accept me.

  10. Hey there. Sorry for the response delay, and sorry about your rejection. :( I just came out of my wallowing hole (lol) to respond. I dont know about you, but I was contacted by Theresa Antes from UF. Their interview styles may be somewhat different if you were contacted by someone else, but be prepared to speak five to ten minutes in French. It was incredibly informal. Like you, it was my first graduate interview as well, and I was really nervous. I didn't prepare too much so I stumbled over my French out of anxiety a little :) She introduced herself and then she asked if she could start in French. She asked me to talk about fhe classes that have prepared me to study French Linguistics at UF. She also asked about ways in which I maintain my French, since I took a year between BA and my applications. She didn't ask me too much in French. In English she asked if I had questions. I asked her about why they didn't accept students into a PhD track, and she said that some programs recently merged and it's still working itself out. She said there is no guarantee that you will be offered an opportunity to move on to PhD but it's possible. She didn't sound too confident in her sales pitch which is why I intend to decline if offered a position -- despite the fact that it's 30 minutes south of my hometown and all my family, whom I miss so terribly :) It was really informal and there was very little pressure. The phone call from start to finish was 21 minutes. You will be fine! Just prepare better than I did! Bon courage. (Sorry for any typos; im on my ipad)

Thanks for your detailed answers. I just finished my phone interview one hour ago. They sounded very happy. They said the result will come out pretty soon, but funding may be a bit slow. Just wish me best luck.

  11. Practice an answer in French to describe (concisely) your research interests and your reasons for applying to the program. I think I could have answered these questions concisely in English, but I was asked in French both times and BOTH TIMES ended up rambling on and on. (You would have thought that I had learned my lesson the first time!)

Be concise and precise in your answers. Make sure you give them the opportunity to ask all their questions so you have time to ask questions at the end... the only way this can be done is if you are brief and to the point. They can always ask you follow-up questions to clarify or expand on something you've said.

Re-read your SOP, CV, writing samples, etc. before the interview so you remember what you've already told them.

Read the handbook and the website. Ask questions about things that aren't clear or well-explained from the handbook and website. Make sure that you don't ask about anything that's already been explained in the handbook and the website! :)

  12. The interview at Northwestern was pretty easy really. It was very informal, breakfast with the faculty, visit of the campus, etc. We had to do a 15 min presentation of our interests + introduce ourselves, etc, then we had five interviews with potential supervisors, but it was more like a relaxed talk, they mainly asked me if I had questions for them.

Anyway, good luck with the interview!

That sounds nice. Guess I still have a lot to prepare.

  13. So sorry to read this, michelle and fransces :(

michelle - have you heard from IU about funding? i'm still waiting.

fransces - I didn't apply to UF but Austin interviewed me on Skype. I had a very nice 15-min chat with three professors who asked me simple questions in English and then in French (What are your interests? What classes in related departments/fields would you be interested in taking? What drew you to UT Austin? Pourquoi voulez-vous faire un PhD en français alors que vous êtes angliciste à la base? and the last one - what do you do in your free time?) and asked if I had any questions for them. Always prepare a few questions, you may already have some, but if you don't, make sure you have something to ask, it may sound weird and like you're not really interested in them if you don't need details or info on anything...  Best of luck, let us know how it went!

Thank you so much for the advice.

  14. I was rejected from Austin last night. I'm so heartbroken :(

Same here. Michelle, I just want to ask you about your interview with UF? Did they ask any hard questions? I am having the phone interview with them this Friday and I am super nervous.
