  1. Random indeed, though at least between us the Romantics are a common denominator. Not my thing either, which would partly explain why I didn't do well!
  2. I'm 33, so you can imagine I took a pretty long break between my undergrad and grad years. I can't speak much for how one should study for the exam considering I did pretty poorly on it. Mind you, I haven't touched a Norton Anthology in probably a decade--and that's pretty much the test. It aims to be comprehensive, but honestly it's just a random, silly, expensive waste of time. Study your Shakespeare. There wasn't much Milton. Really, study any period you simply don't know well. I would start there first. There was a surprising amount of theory on the test I took, stuff about post-structuralism if I correctly recall. Good luck. I personally thought it was much harder than the GRE General.
  3. Yeah, that was me, actually. I got the news around 3pm via email on the 15th from Peter Reed. I was offered a 13.5K fellowship, plus tuition and fees, etc. The stipend is renewable for up to five years, I think. I haven't accepted but am leaning in this direction. I'm from Mobile, AL and I live in Birmingham, AL. So I like the idea of not moving too far away from family and friends. I've been fortunate enough to receive offers elsewhere (better ones financially), but it's my assumption that cost of living at Oxford would be far more reasonable than, say, Albany. I hope this news doesn't create any anxiety on anyone's part. We all work hard. We all hope to be given the opportunities we desire. I applied to six schools and got into three, so I feel really lucky.
  4. Thanks for the kind words, and I wish you the best of luck. Let me know if you get in. Not sure where I'm headed just yet, but it very well may be there.
  5. Finally heard from Ole Miss: it's a yes. Stipend is a little bit lower at 13.5K, but Mississippi isn't an expensive place to live. What a crazy week.
  6. I've actually tried already--twice. If I hear nothing in a week or so, I'll write again. But I've seen some acceptances at LC already. I feel like I can safely assume that I've been rejected. C'est la vie.
  7. I'm still waiting on Penn State like many of you. I never anticipated getting in anyway. Chicago Loyola looks like a no, but I've heard nothing and have no means of being certain. Ole Miss is a bit of a mystery: from what I can tell, no one has heard from them yet. Please correct me if I'm wrong!
  8. Thanks to everyone regarding Loyola Chicago and Ole Miss. Looks as if LC is a rejection for me, then, though you can never be entirely sure.
  9. Same question regarding Ole Miss: has anyone heard from the program? I emailed them on Thursday; no response yet.
  10. Has anyone heard anything from Loyola Chicago? (I'm sure this question has been asked elsewhere, but I'm a newbie. Sorry in advance.)
