  1. I have very similar stats as yours and I applied to 6 universities for the fall 2013 session. I don't mean to discourage you but I was rejected from 5 of them. Still waiting to hear from Lakehead. I didn't give the GRE or Toefl/Ielts because I only applied to those places where it wasn't compulsory to have gre. As I am a Canadian citizen most universities didn't require a toefl either.

  2. No, you don't need three years of relevant work experience for Waterloo, though it certainly helps. On the website, https://uwaterloo.ca/public-health-and-health-systems/future-graduate-students/professional-programs/master-public-health/master-public-health-applying, it only indicated one. However, I was accepted on probationary status this year (last year, I was wait listed, then rejected) because my grades weren't so good.

Basically, for probationary status, I have to end up with a 75% average on two courses - one in the fall and one in the winter. I had a 72% average but over three years of relevant work experience. It certainly helps if you do have the grades AND the work experience. What was also different this time around was that I submitted two work references instead of one work and one academic. My grades weren't great and I graduated in 2009. I took the risk and submitted two work references, since I know my academic reference will be too general. Waterloo was also the only school that I applied to.

Relevant is also highly subjective. From reading the posts on here, the majority of applicants have clinical practice or research experience. I don't have any of that. I worked in a community health centre for a year as an office manager, developing policies and working on budgets for new programs. It was more administrative in nature but had a high impact that affected the catchment area it served. I would say the selling point is my current work experience at a regulatory college. I coordinate assessments for a specific type of regulated health professionals, worked with Public Health Ontario to develop infection control policies, worked with Cancer Care Ontario to develop standards for clinics, etc. I've been in this position for a year and a half. I emphasized how much an MPH would help in my current position and how it will help get me where I want to go. I described that the MPH will give me a unique perspective, as most of my colleagues would be coming from different backgrounds.

So, even with not so great marks, still apply! Just find ways to make it work. You know what your strengths are, so do play it up.

Thanks alot. I'm still waiting to hear from Lakehead and U of T.

  3. Are you going to accept waterloo? I didn't get in there because i didnt have 3 years of experience after graduating from undergrad... did you?

    Goodluck

Was it necessary to have 3 years of experience for Waterloo? It wasn't mentioned anywhere on the website. I'm asking because I had only one year of work experience (clinical practice) and was rejected by Waterloo.

  4. Hey! I still need to hear from U of Sask. I got recommended by the department. I called CGSR last week and she said that she is behind in sending out official letters but should be able to send them out by this week.

My status of Usask still says 'complete ready for review', so I haven't heard from them at all.

  5. Hi I just called Lakehead and they said that they have just sent out their first round of admissions. However if you haven't got a "Declined" then you still have hope! They will be sending their second round of admissions later on this month! I'm waiting on Lakehead too !

Did they mention whether they have sent out the decisions by email or post? My online status hasn't changed, it still says "completed".

  6. Ok thanks alot. I hope and pray to get through as I have applied to UoS only. I completed my undergrad in 2012 only and I have just 1 year experience. So I am quite tensed. And moreover my application is same from past 2 weeks "decision made"

I have also completed my undergrad in 2012 with one year of clinical experience. I applied in Feb and the status of my application is still 'complete ready for review'. It's kinda scaring me now

  7. I applied to Usask in January, but my complete supporting documents was received March 20th. My online portal shows decision made, contact admissions office. I did email them, they said I'll know of d decision by april. Is that normal? Did your portal first show decision made, before dept recommended?

I applied in the first week of February, and all the supporting documents were received by Feb 26th. My application status still says 'complete ready for review'. I guess everyone on this forum who had applied to Usask have had their status changed. Is this a bad sign?
