  1. Hi all!  I was selected for a Germany ETA but am an alternate for the USTA.  So, Germany here I come!  Congrats to others who received good news this week, and good luck to those still waiting!

  2. For the record, I was a finalist for ETA Germany, but was accepted by Fulbright Austria as an USTA, after my third time applying. Good luck!

Congrats!! Did you just find out today?

  3. I'm in the same boat. I was hoping there would be an email waiting for when I woke up this morning. I think it would be bizarre if we didn't hear this week, considering some decisions have gone out...

  4. Thanks, that information was really helpful!  And maybe because there's so much overlap between the two programs there are more alternates who also get grants (either to Germany or Austria)?

  5. I'm not sure.  I studied abroad in Germany last year and loved it.  Part of me wants to go back, but another part of me wants to try living somewhere new.  If I am lucky enough to be in the position to make the decision, I think a lot will depend on when I hear back from each program and their placements. But I also think either program would be great!  We'll see what happens!

  6. I know I'm being completely paranoid, but have you ever gone back to your USTA application to look through it again? If you log in, it just says "print application" and pulls it up as a .pdf, but then it looks incomplete. I don't see my essay or transcript or any of my uploads--not like you do with Fulbright. It makes me worry something happened and my full application wasn't submitted! I wish I could quit worrying about it...

Anyway, I'm also worried a rejection from the USTA portends rejection from the Fulbright ETA, since the USTA is supposed to be less competitive. I thought I was just hedging my bets...but now I'm bracing myself for the worst: double rejection.

I remember thinking the same thing when I tried to open my application right after submitting.  Fingers crossed that everything's in there!  Also, do you know how competitive the USTA is?

  7. I applied to both (and got both) back in 2010. It's a tough decision because Austria is so great at letting you know EXACTLY where you'll be living and at what schools you'll be teaching. Germany leaves you in the dark till May-ish by just telling you your assigned state when you get your congratulatory email. I did my Germany ETA and now reapplied for Austria USTA this year, after kicking myself for not extending. The job market is just terrible!! Good luck to you!

Thanks for the info!  Did you have both offers before you had to make a decision?  I didn't realize you have to wait so long to hear your placement in Germany... But it's encouraging to hear that you had such a great year!
