Totally a personal choice. I know people who have attended both programs and while both are great, I feel Lakehead meets my needs better.
-
Was recently accepted to Waterloo. Likely going to turn it down to attend Lakehead instead. Just thought I would share to inform acceptances still being offered
-
Has anyone heard any recent news from Waterloo?
-
Sorry to hear, sometimes it seems a bit random. Sending well wishes for U of T

Don't get too caught up on peoples "stats". Seriously. Different schools look at different things and most like to have a variety of students with different academic and professional backgrounds. Lakehead (LU) tends to send out rolling admissions and you may hear any day so again, don't get discouraged. It's great that you received acceptance to another school as it is a very competitive field. I hope you hear soon, for peace of mind, and that everything works out for you

Solid GPA, undergrad from Guelph (biology) and Ryerson (public health), 10+ years working in the field of public health in various capacities including work with PHAC, PHO and the Ministry of Health and LTC. Lots more on my CV and LOI but that's the gist of it

Congrats! Happy for you that you got into your top choice and that the wait is over

Yes, but like most universities, they will accept unofficial transcripts and if you get offered acceptance you may have to provide official. I'm not sure what the situation is if you aren't completing your undergrad degree until August. I would also recommend contacting the graduate studies office as they would be able to to best advise you.

Lakehead will update your status in "myinfo" and then follow it up with an email shortly after.
-
Thank you! March 7th will be here before you know it

I'm not sure if Lakehead varies their notification for domestic vs international students. I do know that they don't have a specific time line when they send out notifications in general. If you look at this forum from last year, some didn't receive notification until May. I know it's difficult but try not to worry about it too much.

Yes, I know a few people who have taken the program and have positive things to say about it. It is one of Canada's first MPH programs, being established in 2002. The delivery style of the flex-time option as requiring no time on campus is unique and may have pros (don't have to travel) and cons (don't get to meet your classmates) depending on what you value. Public policy and programming, social determinants of health, health equities, health and social justice, Canadian public health etc. are focuses that I am interested for a public health degree and this program includes these. I think some of the reasons this may be a lesser known program is because Lakehead may be a lesser known school compared to others now offering the MPH simply because it is located in Thunder Bay. Lakehead is a fantastic school. I am a bit biased as half my family lives in Thunder Bay and the majority of them have attended Lakehead. As someone mentioned above, it really doesn't matter what school you go to in term of prestige, regarding Canadian Universities. I have read/heard people asking if Lakehead may be an easier program to get into than other MPHs and I would have to say no. It remains very competitive and I know of a few very qualified people who have not been accepted. When it comes to MPHs, I value programs which put an emphases on professional experience in the field and Lakehead seems to do this. Your decision should likely be based on what the different programs offer and which will serve you best. I truly believe what one gets out of a Masters program all depends on what one is willing to put into it. That means, if you find two programs that are very similar and you can't decide what one to pick, you likely can't go wrong. I also applied to another school but I am leaning towards Lakehead. I hope this helps! I know it's a hard decision

Congrats to you too! I am doing the flex-time program, you? I am really excited as I know it is a great program

I received acceptance from Lakehead today.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to sound so aggressive The point I was trying to make was there are so many different job options out there for someone with an MPH. Being an epidemiologist is a more specific career choice and if this type of study interests someone then they should go for it! No doubt an MPH with an Epi stream will enable you to apply to both Epi jobs as well as jobs that have an MPH as a qualification requirement. I work with epidemiologists who are constantly saying there are few jobs out there but this is in my area and who knows what the future holds. I agree with Burkis above w.r.t. experience. My husband had 10 years public health experience when he graduated from his MPH program and his degree supplemented his career perfectly. I am now in a similar situation and truly excited about the journey of obtaining an MPH to enhance my already existing career!

I would have to disagree with you as it is very generalized statement. One program is not necessarily better than the other and it depends where your interests lie. I have been working in public health for over 10 years and I know many people who with an MPH with no epi background (including my husband) who start out making more than the max of the Epi in the job posting you referenced. If you want to be an epidemiologist, then that's the reason to choose that specialization.

I agree with sn6666. Only the school will be able to provide the correct responses to your questions.

Lakehead does rolling admissions and will accept into the the summer months so I wouldn't worry about your status at this point. Also, if you haven't been rejected yet, that's a good thing. It seems like they accepted some people the end of February but I don't think that necessarily means your chances for admission are lower. It does make it difficult if you have been accepted to other institutions and response is required. Lakehead is the only University I applied to so that was not an issue for me
-
I did not apply to the Western MPH but I would be interested in the feedback about the program after the first cohort has graduated. The cost and the fact that I would have to quit my job to attend were the major deterrents for me. Also, I think the program is focused more on international health and I am more interested in population health of Canadians. It sounds like a unique and exciting MPH program so I wish you luck in making a decision

Has anyone received a rejection from Lakehead?
-
Acception to Lakehead may continue over the next few weeks. Good luck to those still waiting
-
I believe Lakehead does rolling admissions so you may hear into May. You might want to contact them to be certain. There seems to be a lot of notifications from other institutions so it would be great for you to know where you stand with Lakehead at this point. Fingers crossed for you!
-
Thank you for your reply. I did not have an unofficial transcript to upIoad as I had finished my other 2 degrees >10 years ago. I did know they did rolling admissions and I'm trying not to worry but its just one of those things as the days go by. Congrats on getting accepted!

Does anyone know Lakehead's MPH admission process? Although I had all of my completed application documents in before the Feb 1, 2013 deadline, they did not officially receive my transcripts because of an administration error until the end of February. I know someone who was "admitted" before they even officially had my transcripts and proof of graduation. No my status sits at "application under review". Getting antsy and just want to hear either way.
