  1. Hello everyone,

So I'm currently looking for apartments (ideally a furnished studio) in the Hyde Park area. I'm wondering if I should secure an apt with graduate housing or if I should look elsewhere. My main concerns are safety and affordablility. I really want to live in close proximity to the university, but I don't want to spend more than $750 a month on rent.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

  2. For those of you who have gone through MAPSS or are currently in it:

How did you finance your education? I received a half tuition scholarship but with housing and living expenses factored in its still rather expensive in my opinion.

Did you feel as if MAPSS really prepared you to be a solid PhD candidate?

Were you able to apply for PhD programs during MAPSS for the following year or did you take a gap year?

How did you like your cohort- were they supportive, helpful, or competitive? Did you spend a lot of time with people who are in your field of study?

    Thank you for your time!

  3. Hello everyone,

I applied for UChicago's PhD in History for Fall 2013 and was rejected. However, I was admitted into the MAPSS program. I'm debating whether or not I should go for it. I applied to several other PhD programs and was ultimately rejected (so so sad :-( ). I'm still waiting to hear back from one last school. My ultimate goal is to earn a PhD in History (concentration in the African Diaspora) and become a historian/ professor. I feel that on the one hand, getting a MA from UChicago could enable me to be a more competitve candidate for when I reapply in the future. On the other hand, I'm concerned about the program itself (how feasible is it for me to earn a MA in one year)? in addition to the cost.

For those of you who have gone through MAPSS how was your experience?

I would love seriously LOVE any advice that you all have regarding this program. Its getting down to the wire and I have to start making decisions.

    Thank you!!

  4. Hello everyone,

I applied to Columbia's PhD in History for Fall 2013 and have yet to hear anything about my decision. I have been playing a constant game of phone/ e-mail tag with the admissions office. I feel like there is a huge disconnect between that particular office and the admissions committee. Does that make sense? I'm really frustrated at this point because I received an offer from another school and I can't make any decisions without hearing from Columbia. Has anyone else experienced this? Do you think I have been wait-listed? Heck, knowing my luck they probably rejected me and forgot to tell me :-(

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!

    Have a great day!
