  1. Congrats! I just finished my 1st year of the MPH program at Guelph, so if you have any questions I would be happy to help (courses, practicums available, general info). My email is mcumming@uoguelph.ca, as I don't check this that often.
  2. I am not on the admission committee, therefore I cannot give you an accurate answer on how they select people. I know that the letter of intent is very important, you need to have a B+ average in your last two years (sometimes they accept B ), and experience in public health is important. They are probably just taking a while because you have transcripts from a university outside of Canada. You really need to contact the graduate secretary or Dr. Papadopoulos for more information about your application status. Good luck!
  3. On my linkedIn account today a cool website was recommended. Its 150 free (or almost free) public health courses. http://mphprogramslist.com/awesome-free-online-public-health-courses/?goback=%2Egde_4005183_member_235407186 Just in case anyone wants to browse through before the fall!
  4. Also, Its been running for several years, its not the oldest MPH program in Canada. I think if you read the link I posted earlier that will help you get a better sense of the program.
  5. No problem! I love to help and I'm so excited for next year! You can check what times courses are offered at on WebAdvisor. Go to www.uoguelph.ca Click WebAdvisor under "Web Tools" its to the right of the screen Then Click "Students" under main menu Under registration click "search for sections" Then there is a drop down for term (Fall 2013) and a drop down for subjects. (POPM) It looks there is class every day but Friday... 6. Maybe I shouldn't have used the word accredited, I just finished writing my final exams and am a bit sleep deprived!! I should have stated that it is a true MPH program, as some other universities have converted their MSc into an MPH. When I found the MPH progam's proposal it said "The working group began with the 62 competencies proposed for accredited MPH programs by the Public Health Human Resources Task Group. The proposed program was designed based on these competencies and the core strengths of the faculty who will deliver the program." This can also help you find more information about what the program is like: http://www.uoguelph.ca/secretariat/senate/download/meetings/bgs/agendas/MPH.pdf
  7. I feel like Guelph is a pretty accepting community with alot of activism. I wouldn't say that Guelph is the most multicultural university, as my partner attended Waterloo for his undergrad and I felt like he was the minority there. However, its not a strange thing to see different ethnic backgrounds especially in science courses. There are tons of different ethnic associations around, and they usually have days in the university centre to promote awareness. Yes, like any university there are people who are racist, but I do not feel like it is the norm. Guelph has a great sense of community as its a medium size university. I would say that Guelph has a 7:3 ratio of girls to boys though!! Students in Guelph are very caring as people are always sending random people notes if they are sick, random acts of kindness, and generally help people out. I am graduating from Biomedical Sciences, and usually its a cut throat program in other universities as people want to be doctors, dentists, etc etc. However, I never felt like anyone was going to screw me over, the profs were very friendly and so were my classmates. Guelph is very environmentally driven, and there are always campaigns to reduce water bottle waste, sustainability, and various other eco things. I would definitely take a tour of the campus sometime and check it out yourself. If you decide to accept there are various websites for housing (I was a Off Campus Living Peer Helper) such as www.thecannon.ca, www.uoguelph.ca/OCL or www.kijji.ca My email is mcumming@uoguelph.ca if you want to chat further. Hope I helped! Melissa
  8. Congratulations! I'm a guelph grad, and I've talked to Dr. Papadopoulos several times about the program. He is a really nice man if you have further questions. Guelph's program is only a couple years old and they only have 20 spots, so its a nice small program that is accredited. The program is a combination of arts and science, and its connected to the Ontario Veterinary College which is great for foodborne illnesses, zoonosis, infectious disease, etc etc. Its a very general program in the first year, and you get to pick your electives in second year based on what your interested in. You can also complete the program earlier if you take 4 courses for a couple terms and 1 during practicum. He said that for practicum usually 75% are paid positions, and 25% are volunteer positions usually while sometimes the volunteer ones give you better experience. My partner is a Masters student in Epi at Guelph and he has taken a few courses that the MPH students are required to take. The profs have all been great for him! Its definitely not an MPH/ grad factory! I may be biased but Guelph is a beautiful university town, and a lovely place to live. Everyone is very friendly, and tries very hard to help you succeed. If you have any more questions, I would love to answer them.
  9. YAY!! Congratulations! Hopefully I'll see you in the fall!
  10. Thanks! I think they want the last two years (4 semesters) of schooling you have completed. I would definitely get in touch with the secretary for the program to clarify more details. Her name is Rebecca Knaggs and her email is rknaggs@uoguelph.ca
  11. Thank you! I got a letter in the mail that was dated April 8th.
  12. I was accepted to Guelph's MPH, and I am very happy as I only applied to Guelph! I have to respond by April 29th, so I'm assuming they will send out second rounds then. I'm a biomed major with a minor in psyc and I am graduating this semester. I just barely made the B+ average and but I have lots of volunteer experience (HIV/AIDS, get swabbed campaign, tobacco awareness, alcohol educator, peer helper, brain day, etc etc). I also have research experience in the population medicine department at Guelph and spent the past two years as a doctor's assistant part time. So, there is hope for people with not the greatest averages to get in! Good luck and hopefully see you in the fall!
  13. Hi! I don't think Guelph has made any decisions yet, as the confirmation of application email said "Those applicants receiving offers of admission should expect to be notified by mid to late April 2013". I only applied to Guelph so its nerve wracking waiting for them to decide. Good luck!
