  1. I was just curious because I also study social psychology, and it's rare to find somebody else who does!

Awesome! What specifically are you interested in? Are you planning on doing social psych research while on Fulbright?

  2. I hear you! I've already done studies abroad and I had the greatest experience, but it was still really difficult for me to be away from my loved ones.  As the months passed, I realized it was easier if I just kept things to 2 or 3 emails a week, but by the end of the year I was a mess :)

It also makes me a little nervous to actually live there (Jamaica) on my own.  I know absolutely no one and, from what I've heard, life in Kingston can be a bit challenging for people who don't know their way around... Being a young, foreign woman is just the icing on the cake :)

So, yeah, I'm definitely 100% excited about going, but also a tiny little bit anxious.

I am also nervous as well. I lived in my Fulbright country (Lesotho) for almost 3 months before starting graduate school, but all the logistics of finding housing and setting up my research study has me anxious. That combined with the fact that my graduate advisor is obsessing about my safety has me a bit on edge.

I am anxious too! I REALLY, REALLY want to get it, but I'm also scared. Mostly I'm nervous because I don't know what to do with my cat. He's my baby and I don't want to leave him but I worry the travel would be too stressful for him. I know he could live happily with my parents while I'm away but I'd really miss him :-/

I am leaving my fur babies as well...I know they will be in good hands, but that isn't going to make me miss them any less.

I am sure once we all get to our various locations and get settled, we will love it and not want to leave to come back home. :)

  3. Ummmm I am far to busy lol- but will happily join if someone does the honor of creating it. I'm in the middle of finalizing my proposal and advancing to candidacy. I know you know what that means from your name.

haha...I do know what that means! Best of luck!

I am also swamped in the middle of dissertation stuff, but I should have some time to do this :)

  4. Has anyone started a Facebook group for those going to Sub-Saharan African Countries?

BTW Congrats to all those who just heard back!

I don't think so? Care to do the honors? :)

Would love to have a way to connect with all the other Fulbrighters even if we are all going to be pretty far away from each other.

  5. I wasn't lurking but for the live of me could not figure out how to post here... When I logged in the thread would disappear. Weird!

You are very welcome to the news, I was just glad I was finally able to get on and share it. Good luck with Lesotho. Have you been there yet? It is amazing!

    LOL

Thank you and good luck with Kenya! I have been to Lesotho. I spent 3 months living there teaching HIV/AIDS education prior to starting graduate school. It sounds like you've been to Lesotho as well. Where abouts? It really is an amazing country!

  6. Hi everyone, I've applied for a full research grant to Kenya in support of my PhD. I am hopeful for my chances but of course one never knows! For those of you who have also applied to SSA (sub-Saharan Africa), I wrote to Jermaine Jones and received the following response two days ago (Monday April 8):

    "Hello ______,

I've heard that final selections for Sub-Saharan Africa may be ready by the middle of next week. I don't have any more specific information for you than this, but can say that I should be able to notify you and the other finalists within 24 hours of my receiving them.

(And fortunately, the situation in Kenya pre- and post-election has remained stable enough for the Fulbright program to continue running there uninterrupted.)

    I hope this helps."

So if you are waiting for SSA, please don't start worrying/freaking out/checking inboxes until at least next Wednesday! Has anyone else here applied to Kenya?

Long time lurker...was kind of superstitious about posting...but I am also waiting for Sub-Saharan Africa. Full grant to Lesotho. Looks like the waiting may soon be over. :)  Thanks for the info GlamLeo!

Congrats to those who have received good news and my condolences to those who received bad news. Sending positive vibes to those of us still waiting!
