I'm interested in political intolerance and intergroup relations. If possible, I'd like to conduct a study similar to one I conducted in Moscow a year ago, when I looked at how nationalism and religiosity affect intergroup attitudes in people high in RWA and SDO. However, I'm writing one of my senior theses on political intolerance and would like to incorporate that into some sort of project in Tajikistan. But... It depends on feasibility, and it isn't the research that I proposed in my Fulbright application. So we'll see. Pretty sure I'd be the first person to collect that kind of data there, though... In what are you interested?

I was just curious because I also study social psychology, and it's rare to find somebody else who does!
-
Totally unrelated question - you're pursuing a PhD in social psychology?
-
Let's hope for some news today!

I'm waiting on Tajikistan... Every day I think my notification will come. And then it doesn't.
-
All quiet on the Fulbright front... Not that I actually expected Tajikistan to notify me any sooner than 31 May .

You might also consider maintaining contact with someone who'll be at your current institution next year and sending them a weekly or biweekly list of sources that he or she can then email to you. That way, you have a constant stream of new material without the added cost. At least, this is what I was planning to do.

I think it's sad that Uzbek lost vowel harmony, cause it's pretty cool . And that's interesting about the spoken versus written mutual intelligibility of Uzbek and Uyghur... It certainly makes sense that Uyghur would have more Chinese vocabulary! I would like to know more about Chinese history and politics. Did you like the Purdue book or do you have other reading recommendations? A few more items that I suggest are Svat Soucek's "History of Inner Asia" and, for a contemporary analysis, Alexander Cooley's "Great Game, Local Rules." I haven't read any of Hopkirk's books, but I will look for one if you think it's worth it.

Congratulations to everyone heading to Russia!

Hey! No, actually, it's my name. Perhaps I should have applied as a legacy... But I'm finishing up at The College of New Jersey, a long ways away from SC.

If you're interested in Russia's non-Turkic Muslim populations, look at the North Caucasus. It's a very interesting case study. Also, keep in mind that all Central Asians and Caucasians, not just the Turkic populations, experience discrimination. This leads me to believe that the sentiment is less "anti-Turkic" and more anti-Central Asian or anti-Caucasian, perhaps even anti-Islamic (although, for example, the Tatars' relationship with Russia makes me question this conclusion). I'm curious about the books/ articles you're reading. Would you mind naming a few? If you're interested in historical religious trends in Russia and Central Asia, I recommend Robert Crews' book "For Prophet and Tsar" and any of Adeeb Khalid's books. They are not perfect, but useful. Alexei Malashenko's writings touch upon more contemporary religious issues in both regions. If you read Russian, the Carnegie Moscow Center released a book series entitled "Religion in Eurasia" - it's pretty good. The language scene in Tajikistan is changing. More people speak Tajik, fewer people speak Russian. Sugh, where Khujand is located, retains more Turkic influence, and many people speak Uzbek. In fact, there is a significant Uzbek population in Tajikistan - hence American Councils' arrangement to send Uzbek language learners to Dushanbe (or Bishkek). I speak Russian and Persian, but if I will be in Tajikistan next year, I plan to study Uzbek.

Hello! Could you, perhaps, elaborate on what you mean by "analysis methods?" Are you asking about statistical analysis or data collection? I have experience with both and might be able to offer you some ideas.

Wow! That sounds fascinating! Yours is a very interesting topic, especially if you consider the current situation in Xinjiang. And if there is to be any Uzbek/ Tajik/ Kyrgyz Spring in the near future, the Xinjiang question will grow even more important. Do you speak Uzbek and/ or Uyghur? I remember a little Uzbek from my time in Uzbekistan and know that, as you mentioned, it is related to Uyghur more so than to some of the other Turkic languages. I hope that you end up publishing something on your research - I would love to read it! In Russia, I conducted research on how nationalism and religiosity affect Russians' perceptions of various groups, mainly Muslims. I negotiated with professors at the International University of Moscow (my host institution), Moscow State University, and the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute to distribute surveys to students at each place. It was an interesting experience... but I must say it taught me patience .

Hello! I applied to study the evolution of Tajik foreign policy since the fall of the Soviet Union, focusing on Tajik-Russian and Tajik-Iranian relations. However, I may add a focus on Afghanistan, especially considering the upcoming U.S. withdrawal. Moreover, I conducted social psychological research in Moscow on Russian-Muslim relations and would like to pull off a similar project in Tajikistan. This study, though, would incorporate more reliable measures and focus more on political intolerance, rather than social intolerance. What would you be interested in researching?

Hello, everyone! I have not seen any posts about Central Asia. Has anybody applied to conduct research or teach English there? I was recommended for a Fulbright Research Grant to Tajikistan and am waiting to hear a final decision.
