What sort of things did they tell you? Not to be nosy, just along what lines and how specific?

OK advice time. I am applying to a Master's program I liked initially but had decided to hold off on for various (and stupid) reasons. My recs are there, my GRE's, my app. All I need is to submit my statement. As I've been rejected plenty of places, I figured I'd revamp things a bit. I'm interdisciplinary, and want to get a PhD on that track, but I think a Master's background in Anthro might strengthen my app to PhD later on. So what do I do in the essay? I've been told not to say you want a PhD if applying for a terminal Master's, since they will question your motives for not applying for the PhD program. I'm archaeology and want to be in academia, but how can I get around saying that? Or do you think honesty is the best policy. Is it worth saying I want a terminal Master's for now, because I intend to be interdisciplinary and deal with academic archaeology and policy later? My professors all had such different opinions, and now I think the broad range of responses and subsequent confusing it caused in the app process is reflected in my partial failure this year. Oh well, if this Masters doesn't work I'll always have next year and experience. Sorry if my grammar is off tongiht. I started the day with a major rejection, and had a nice 9-5+ day of filing and organizing my new office.

Annnnd. I didn't get into to UCLA. Oy. Oh well. There's always next year. I'm glad I know. Edited to reflect my rejection instead of annoyance at not hearing anything.

I knew what you meant. I am so annoyed. Nobody has heard from Archaeology on the board results page. I called once and the woman told me some decisions were sent out but not all. I know someone else called. I feel bad for the Grad Assistant. I'd call again, but I'm too frightened. It is an interdepartmental program, so maybe it takes longer because advisers are in various departments. It is my first choice (and not just because I'm out of most of my choices). Chances are I won't make it, but in the past it seems like at least a couple people posted on the results board. If they've let some, but not all accepted know, why aren;t there any! AHH. It's OK. This process has me in knots. Is there archaeology as a sub-dicsipline in anthro? I know they are separate depts but maybe the people who listed archy in the past at UCLA were, in fact, in the anthro with a sub-discipline in archy. Too much speculating.

Cornell has one person on the results page who heard mid February they were accepted. No rejections. UC Irvine has a couple of acceptances and a rejection in mid-February. Hope this helps. Good Luck!
-
A few people on the main results page heard in early February that they were accepted. I am still waiting for Archaeology, but nothing yet.
-
UCLA Archaeology or cultural? they are separate departments.
-
Rejected from Stony. UCLA interdepartmental is my last shot.
-
mine too. what's an anthropology student need to do to catch a break these days?

This is from the waiting it out folder, where I posted. But this gives archy news and a question: OK. Time to judge a communication. I spoke with the graduate secretary today (should I have called the chair?) at UCLA for archaeology. First I asked about transcripts, and she said it was her mistake and then blah blah. So then I asked when we should be hearing. She said some interviews were scheduled and if I was among the accepted I should hear this week by email and if not she is "sorry." She said the last part like in a sad voice. Is this bad? Do you think she knows? I am so scared now! This was my top choice along with Stony. Ack!

So nobody has heard from archaeology at UCLA yet? I'm not too hopeful, but they do accept on average 19% of their applicants, compared to 11% for Anthro. I hate waiting. Just one school let me in!
-
By postal service. Same old 'we had many qualified applicants, you were not among the accepted.'
-
Rejected by Cornell Archy. It's OK. I got promoted at work, so if nothing turns up I have a job.
-
Well I was rejected to Cornell today (no surprises!) and wait listed at Rochester for Visual Cultural Studies. At least it is my first non-rejection. Ont he plus side, I got a promotion at the Gallery where I work. Congrats Halifax, by the way. That is awesome.
-
So today three people were rejected via email by Rochester for Visual Cultural Studies PhD and one was accepted. Has anyone here heard back and want to share? I am sooooo desperate. Every time I open my email I can feel the rejection email from them is coming.
-
It appears Cornell Art and Archaeology called two people on the results page today. Just an update. The two departments are joined, so it may indicate they are moving along.
-
So basically, if we haven't heard we aren't in. I guess it isn't surprising. Rejection is rejection. We'll be OK.
-
So someone got into Cornell today on the results board. They got a call. I'm a little concerned, but my chances are low so it is a rejection I can take. Just to include my results here- I got rejected from UT Austin last week. They updated my status. So those who have heard nothing, sit tight. You probably made it to the next round.

Well, I'm archaeology. I am a little different than the major evolution and physical foscus in the department. I applied because I am really interdisciplinary, and their program does fit. I don't know. We'll see. The woman was annoying. One of my advisers handed in their rec late because he got tied up doing reearch in Germany in the feild, and when I spoke to her months ago (nto telling her my name) she was like "can he fax someting or email something? even a pargraph about you." I tried explaining that he had limited phone adn computer access because he was in a remote area there, and she was not getting it. nthropologists being in remote areas without daily computers? Who'd of thought? Finally she said the end of the week was fine. At least we wasn't in his normal field area - Papua New Guinea. He got it out by the end of that week. I suppose they must get many calls like that though. I'm a receptionist, and I know I get annoyed answering the same bland questions over and over again.
-
Wow youe so lucky. Stony Brook is my top choice, even though I applied to "harder" schools. I called and the woman seemed annoyed and I was like I was wondering when you're sending out decisions. She was like your name? I said my name and she was like their reviewing this week. A week. They should have it. I feel like why did she ask my name? Because I'm not in! I'll be so sad. It is OK. My undergrad adviser said academia is all about rejection and it will be fine. Thanks..I guess? I'm not worrying. What happens will happen.
-
Possibly. Are you in or out of state? That also might make a difference. I saw the status check page. They changed the part where it was like we've recived your app to we don't want you. It's ok. I'll be fine.
-
I broke down and called Stony Brook today. She said they are reviewing this week and people should hear by next week. Someone posted on the board that they heard two weeks ago, and that worries me, but they heard two weeks after the deadline. That would be quick. I don't know. So NERVOUS!

That's really a good point, and it is nice to hear from a stranger, but when I try to tell myself that it still hurts. Oh well. I wasn't counting on Texas because of their really low out of state acceptance. We'll see. It is sooo hard to wait for the rest!
