  1. Seems like that was the only posting for JHU since then as well. The forums and results seem quieter this year when compared to the chaos that waslast year, haha. Looks like a Wisconsin-Madison result is also out.
  2. Seems like last year, Johns Hopkins Biostatistics offered interviews emails around last week but there doesn't seem to be anything from them on the results search page this year. Anyone heard anything from them yet?
  3. Congratulations WeezyF (Baby?)! I also find the lower level of activity in the forums this year interesting especially since it seems like more and more people have been getting interested in stat/biostat lately.
  4. You've been a great source of positive energy throughout the thread. =D I will be unless something comes up. Should probably see what Minnesota is like during the Winter.
  5. Thanks! Seems like I might be out of the running for Harvard by the sound of things though.
  6. Thanks! Also, I didn't get that Harvard Biostat email and I'm a domestic student. Do you know if Harvard is only considering students they sent that email to?
  7. Just a reminder for everyone to keep their phones near them. Missed a phone call from an admissions person in University of Minnesota at first and then called back to learn that I got accepted there. Really awesome guy.
  8. Thank you! Definitely getting a bit more worried about things in general after that result. It seems like Harvard Biostatistics PhD offered someone an interview from the results search. Anyone here got that email?
  9. Same timing this year. Waitlisted by University of Washington Biostatistics PhD.
  10. Yeah, I got a Duke rejection just now also. That's a bit disheartening, to be flat rejected on what seems like the first round of considerations.
  11. Thank you! I submitted mine a bit earlier than the deadline: 11/21/14.
  12. Last year there were separate threads for profiles and general admissions waiting/chatting so here is this year's thread for the latter. Just heard back from University of Michigan Biostatistics department with an admission to their Masters and funding to be decided in March. How is everyone else doing?
  13. Sort of just asking a question here but I also did the SIBS program at Minnesota. Mine was in the summer of 2013. Anyways, I was going to ask if you think the SIBS program is classified as research experience? From my year at least, I don't think we actually did any research; it was more like lectures and a broad introduction to biostatistics and statistical packages, culminating in a project at the end.
  14. Would you also say that a poor grade in abstract algebra is unforgivable for top stat programs or just math? Someone correct me if I'm wrong here but it seems like statistics as a study isn't too related to abstract algebra so I was under the impression that it's just another math class in that regard.
  15. それはいいかんがえだとおもいます。 がんばってください!
  16. Hope I'm not hijacking but does anyone know what these interviews are like? Are there technical questions to make sure you know your math or is it just getting to know the person type of things?
  17. Ah, it sounds like the job market for PhD graduates is significantly better. Not going to lie, 50k is disappointing to hear for someone with a Masters degree. Thank you very much for sharing this information.
  18. This is somewhat related but does anyone know how the industry job market differs for those who hold a Masters and those who hold a PhD? Things like salary, location options, what ceilings are present and anything else relevant?
  19. Thank you very much! I guess that frees up a lot of room when I go course shopping for the next semesters. Do you recommend taking the Math GRE? I don't really have the time to study for it over my semesters but I could study up over the summer.
  20. Hi everyone, thanks for taking the time to read this thread. As the title states, I'm currently a junior so I have one more year to add to my profile before applying to graduate schools. Of course, I would like to do all I can to make myself as competitive as possible when the time comes though. Here's some background information. School: Top 15 Liberal Arts College Major: Math Minor: Physics, Economics GPA: 3.92 Overall, (4.0 in Major) Haven't taken much math classes so far so that might be a bit weak. Multivariate Calculus (High School) Differential Equations (High School) Linear Algebra (A) Probability Models (A) Into to Number Theory (A) Mathematical Statistics (A) Research experience: I spent a summer doing astronomy research at my college before freshman year. Letters of recommendation: Not quite sure yet. GRE: Not yet taken. Schools: Would like some recommendations on where to apply! I know my profile is mostly incomplete so far but an idea of where I'm competitive for would be nice. This past summer I took part in a Summer Institute of Biostatistics program and that really made me decide on doing this. I'm currently taking a Real Analysis and Advanced Linear Algebra class this semester. My school seems to only offer one more stat class and I could take that next year in the Fall. The math department here is small and I'm not sure if I could be of much use to what little statistics research that might be taking place throughout the year. If anyone has any tips on what classes to take from here on out, that would be great! I'm taking an intro bio course this semester but don't know if I should take more after this semester. Computer Science classes in my school are incredibly hard to get into as an upperclassman but I did learn some SAS and R over the past summer. I'm really hoping to land an REU this summer to get a sense of statistical research but my luck with getting accepted into those programs has been awful. If anyone knows of any relevant backup programs to apply to, that would be greatly appreciated.
  21. Oh thank you very much for this information! I wasn't aware of this at all. I looked into it a bit and it seems like they expect you to go into a PhD program right after so I'm not sure if this is for me, since I might not be a good situation to pursue a PhD. Will definitely keep in mind though. Oh I sure hope funding doesn't end soon but I guess this kind of thing will inevitably happen. Going to Columbia would be great since I would be at home but being locked into a PhD is what I'm trying to avoid. I just don't want to be in a PhD program and back out at some point, essentially wasting all their funding on me.
  22. Thank you so much for your insight! Those three sounds like great places to apply too, although maybe a bit difficult to get into since they seem so highly regarded. I guess Berkeley and Michigan funding their MS would make sense since they don't generally offer a straight to PhD from Undergrad from what I understand. If anyone else knows about places that fund their MS, I would be very interested in knowing. I see you're attending UW and congratulations for getting in there! Do you think they will discontinuing funding their MS by the time I apply (2014 in the Fall)? Looks like an MS in UCLA would be out of the question for me since I live in NYC.
  23. Hello! I am going into my junior year of undergraduate next year and figure that it's probably best to do some research on biostatistics graduate programs. I am more interested in doing a Masters degree than a PhD because I'm not sure if my family could financially handle 5 more years of graduate studies before I get a job to help support them. Honestly I would love to do a PhD program but I'm not sure if that's feasible in my circumstances. I understand that funding for graduate programs are almost entirely reserved for PhD students but I was wondering if there were any exceptions that significantly or fully fund their Masters students in biostatistics? I don't think I could attend a Masters program if it would cost over 10k a year. I would greatly appreciate any advice or information anyone has!
