UCSB gives a 1000 stipend with a TAship, plus free tuition and healthcare. Other grants for travel, interdisciplinary research, etc. are available.

Thanks for the support!

Wow, awesome!! When was their deadline? Are they your top choice? Where else did you apply?
That's fabulous news, seriously congrats!!
Thanks cpw0021! Congrats on your interview for Chicago:) How exciting!
Madison's deadline was 1/5, with TAship interviews still to come. Funding will play a huge part in who my top choice ends up being. I just updated my signature with my list of schools. Fingers crossed for more good news for us all!

I just received an email of acceptance of UW-Madison! They're quick.

201oldmill - I received the same catalog from RISD and just had to laugh. How could they be so cruel?
jl10 - I'm still waiting on Bard for painting. We're supposed to find out via email this week, but this week is rapidly vanishing. Hopefully we'll find out soon!

Art & Debt
in Visual
Solid advice. Having those first years after grad school to focus on making work, and not worrying about getting a full-time job to pay off debt, sounds like the way to go. I don't have any debt from undergrad (I went to a state school with a full ride), so perhaps I don't have a healthy fear of it! The idea of 30k doubling is terrifying. The burden of debt would definitely limit one's ability to accept opportunities!

Art & Debt

thepictureisstill - Thank you for sharing Teresita Fernández's talk! Wow, she nails it. That was exactly what I needed to hear, too.
On topic, I'm torn about how much debt is worth accumulating for a top tier school. I think it would be easier to make better art without loans, but at the same time, I think part of the reason for getting an MFA is for the community and, well, connections. I personally would never take out $100k in loans, but I would take out $20-30 for the right program. At least that's what I'm thinking now. The other main reason I see for doing it is for the concentrated time in the studio, but you don't really need grad school for that.

Maelstrom, thank you for checking for us! Thepiectureisstill, thank you for the wise encouragement:)
Good luck everyone!

I believe Indiana and the New York Studio School are great for figurative painting.
There is a lot of information on this forum, so I suggest reading a few years back. If you're finishing up undergrad, go ahead and apply if you feel ready, but consider taking a few years to travel, show, and paint! It's scary to think about when you're just finishing college, but it's often a good idea to let your work and life develop a bit before jumping into a program. Figure out in which part of the art world you want to be.
Best of luck!

Yep, mine just changed too! I agree that this is probably not good.

heyyyy - I got an interview for painting at yale which is exciting
for those who got rejected, this was my second time applying
and I got rejected everywhere the first time I applied
so... it's pretty random what happens I guess.
Huge congrats, mlk! I just learned that I was rejected from Yale, but this is my first year applying and your story is encouraging. I hope your interview goes wonderfully!!

congrats to you both!!

I do not have experience on the viewing side of things, but did apply to Columbia. I just saved each image as close to 5mb as possible at 72 dpi. The pixel sizes vary, but mine all ended up in the 1000-1600/side range. I am sure they'll view each image full size, and won't stretch them.
I hope that helps, and good luck!

Fascinating talk!

Check out the New York Studio School. I don't know much about their MFA program, but people seem to love studying with Graham Nickson!

Hi Kyle! Love your work, and your statement adds so much to it. The Turban series is great. One little thing: make sure you change "waste" to "waist"!

Our work has a way of developing organically, and I love that I have no idea what mine will be about in five years! I'll make sculpture when I should, I am sure.
Yeah, I've scrolled through past years' forums as well. What a great resource. I'm sure we'll all be more chatty come December (and definitely Feb/March)!

Hi bandito! I'm still on the fence, honestly. I may apply to both or neither this round.
I love some work that comes out of both of Mount Royal and Hoffberger. I identify as a painter but would like to expand my practice to include sculpture. For this reason, I may be leaning towards Mount Royal!

I'm with Bandito.

idioteck,
Sweet! Thanks for stopping in. I always wish people from the other side would.
Great work! How do you feel that it has developed so far, since you arrived? Do you have a lot of interaction with professors?
I didn't realize I knew Enrique Martinez Celaya until I looked him up. One of his sculptures is in Miami, and I always stop for it. What a fascinating background.

I think a lot of people apply to 10-15! If you would be excited to go to any on your list, then I think it's a solid plan. It's a great list. I am only applying to so few because I'm not set on going in 2014, but will have about 10 if I reapply.
-
Also, good luck on your Fulbright application!

Kafralal,
I don't mind at all! RISD is my dream school, though Yale, Columbia, and MICA are right up there. RISD and MICA may fit my work the best, but I need to visit the schools to get a more accurate read. I love a a few painters who went to Columbia. This list will of course expand if I reapply, as there are quite a few more I am interested in and this is a ridiculously selective group.
Next summer I have residencies at the Rio Mesa Center, an interdisciplinary research center with the University of Utah, and Elsewhere Studios in Paonia, Colorado. I love that part of the world, and both places seem to suit me and my work. In the fall, I will most likely be at the Burren College of Art in Ireland, and I can't wait. The Burren is breathtaking and kind of magical. If all of my dreams come true and I am accepted to one of these schools, I'll hopefully be able to go the following summer. It's expensive, but so is grad school and my job is portable.
Now I just need to save as much money as I can while painting the best paintings I can, but that's what I'll be doing for as long as I can see.
I've been thinking about applying to grad school for a few years, and I'm glad I waited until now. This is the first year I feel ready.
I do recommend everyone having a contingency plan. It seems like a lot of people go through this for more than one round, and that's ok!
Just keep making art.

Yep! I got the same email, and have never applied to SVA.
