Still no good news on the grad school front, but at least it looks like I'll be going to Iceland this summer! -

Emailed my POI, he told me the (bad) news. Received an email a few days later, then got a letter in the mail with the same message. -

Talked with someone that said that admissions at whoi are still ongoing; an email I sent to the education coordinator in mc&g said the same thing. I think most of the faculty are at the ocean sciences meeting in Hawaii, too. -

No news is probably better than bad news at this point. If you want to know, I'd suggest sending your POI an email asking about your application status. Bunch of rejections from WHOI on the results search! Also, I called UW today and they said that the majority of the invites to open house have been sent out. -

I called the academic advisor/assistant dean at UW Oceanography on Thursday, and she said that she hadn't received the initial list of invites to UW's open house, but that the committee's deadline was 2/18. -

Just called UW's oceanography graduate admissions, the committees haven't sent out the first round of invites yet, but the deadline for that is 2/18. -

Rejected from Princeton (surprise!), invited to a campus visit by my POI at UDel. Still waiting on news from Oregon State, UW, and WHOI. -

Just got an email back from my POI at Scripps, and he says that he's only taking one student this year and I'm not one of the top applicants. Ah well, moving on! -

I applied to the Geosciences program, but also had two people from the COAP department listed in my application. My friend that got the full award package also applied to geosciences, and the one applying to physical oceanography got an email from her POI telling her that she'd made the first cut. -

I'm getting a bit worried -- two of my friends have already heard back from their POI at Scripps (one of them just got his full award package today), and I haven't heard anything. Should I send him an email, or just wait it out? -

Took a gap year to prepare for graduate school. I'm applying to chemical oceanography programs, and I'm specifically interested in ocean acidification. Not sure if I want to do laboratory/field or computational research, but I have experience with both. Undergrad Institution: Public ivy Major(s): Geology GPA in Major: Not sure Overall GPA: 3.5 (2.57 my first semester of college) Position in Class: Near top, I believe Type of Student: Domestic, male GRE Scores (revised/old version): Q: 164 V: 165 W: 4.5 (Wrote myself into a corner on the first essay & didn't have time to rewrite, fairly certain I got a 6 on the other essay) Research Experience: Three years working in a stable isotope paleoclimate lab at school, spent two summers interning at Woods Hole, and conducted a year long original research project for my capstone. No publications, but I have experience in method development and designing an original research project. Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Graduated with departmental honors. Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Tutored and participated in a number of science outreach events, mostly targetted towards younger, underpriviliged students. Any Miscellaneous Accomplishments that Might Help: Familar with laboratory, field, and computational work. Taught myself how to use MATLAB. Special Bonus Points: Interned under a big name in oceanography up at Woods Hole, getting a letter from him. Took two graduate level classes & did well in both, one of my LoR writers ranks me in the top 1% of students. Submitted an application to the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship program. Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Looking back, I did a pretty piss poor job of contacting some professors. Ah well. :/ Applying to Where: Scripps - Chemical Oceanography Princeton - Atmospheric & Oceanic Science WHOI/MIT - Chemical Oceanography Oregon State - Ocean Biogeochemistry Washington - Chemical Oceanography Delaware - Oceanography
