  1. I have a question for you ... you said "latest GPA."  I went to two colleges, so I have two different GPAs.  Does this mean they MIGHT only consider my latest GPA? I'm happy either way, but I'm just wondering.

As for OP's question, I would also recommend having your recommenders address your lower scores in their letters.  My thesis advisor was talking to her colleague at a top 25 school and he said that they look for Quant scores in the 60th percentile range. If the applicant didn't have a score in that range, he said that would "have to be explained."  So, there's still hope, and if the scores are EXPLAINED by you and hopefully your recommenders, then you stand a higher chance of being considered!

Yes, most probably, they will consider your latest GPA. If the other one is better, they might take note. If the latter one is better, it is definitely for your benefit.

  2. I am not sure if they 'dismiss' per se, but unless you have a really strong background in other components of your application, it makes you a weaker candidate among others. The GREs and your latest GPA is their baseline elimination method for the first round of cutting the applicant number down..

I would strongly suggest going over the math and adopting some habits to increase your vocab score. the GRE really helped me prepare!

    Good luck with everything!!

  3. I'm a international student who is doing my mphil in uk in sociology. I also applied to duke brown Johns Hopkins Princeton ucla uci. My stats: V: 720, Q: 800, AW: 3.0. I took the GRE three years ago. I know AW is my weakness. My TOEFL is 113. My undergrad GPA is 3.77, my mphil grade is 62, here in uk 70 is a distinction and it's difficult to get 70 in sociology. No publications but loads of RA experience. My research interests are demography, health, family, aging and inequality. I didn't see many international students got admitted yet, maybe they are not on this website.

I am an international student on the website :) I went to undergrad in the US though. Good luck!! You seem like a very strong candidate. Stay positive  :)

  4. I received a waitlist on UCLA as well. I found the email in my junk box saying the same thing. I was already accepted to both OSU and UNC, but UCLA was a better fit for my research interests so I might still go to their visiting days.

My background: BA in soc, 2 years as a TA, 1 year as an RA and 1.5 years conducting my own research. 3 conferences, 2 papers to be submitted this year, 3.9 GPA, 161 verbal, 163 quant, 5.5 writing.

Good luck everyone and check your Junk Mail!

quick question : do you show up as 'waitlisted' on the UCLA check status page? here is that page.

    Thanks!

  5. Hello everyone,

It has been so much fun reading your posts, knowing I am not in this alone!! It is so great to be here =)

I started off as a high school dropout; I had to leave high school for medical reasons.  I received my GED just months after my peers graduated.  I fell in love with sociology when I took 101 as a biology major.  Understandably, one of my favorite areas of sociology is medical sociology.  My other interests include sociology of religion, gender, and reproduction.

I completed my undergraduate education this past December 2013 with a combined GPA of 3.94 from both colleges (3.88 at community college, 3.97 at the four-year college).  I completed an undergraduate honors thesis to earn departmental honors in sociology.

As for GRE scores, I received a 164 (93rd percentile) in Verbal, a 152 (49th percentile) in Quantitative, and a 4 (53rd percentile) in Analytical Writing.  I know the quantitative score is a bit low, but I can't be too hard on myself, though, (I'll leave that to the admissions boards) considering my practice tests started me out in the 20th percentile.

I am blessed that none of the schools required a page limit for the writing sample portion of the application.  I just submitted my thesis as my writing sample.  I am also lucky to have had some stellar letters of recommendation from my thesis committee who can vouch for my quantitative abilities that the GRE score does not reflect.

Here are the schools I've applied to:

    - Lehigh University, PA

    - University of Delaware

    - University of Maryland

You may be asking: "Medical Sociology?  Where's Brandeis in that list?!?"  Brandeis is my dream school!!  However, it is imperative I stay as close to home as possible at this time, for personal family reasons.

Looking forward to getting to know all of you  :)

PS - if any of you will be there, I will be attending the Sociologists for Women in Society (SWS) winter meeting in Nashville next week, and I will also be attending the Eastern Sociological Society (ESS) winter meeting in Baltimore from February 20-23.

Good luck! I am super interested in Medical Sociology as well!! I never looked at the schools you applied to, I wish I did - they seem great. You can see where I applied below.. Super anxious to get an email soon. I discovered medical sociology as an undergrad at Brandeis and spent my last two years taking med soc related classes the whole time. It made me so happy to know that Brandeis was such a big deal for med soc. Good luck!! :)

  6. So I am applying for the 2014 fall admission Sociology PhD positions.

My professors (undergrad advisers) told me that it does not make sense to email professors. However, other professors say the contrary.

What did you guys do? Did you email professors individually to show interest in addition to mentioning them in your statement of purpose?

    • If you did: what did you say? How did they (or did they) respond?
    • If you did not: Why? Is it a bad idea?

    Thanks all!
