  1. Hi there! Obviously no one can tell you for certain because we arent on addcoms, but I can tell you that in my experience specific I/O research experience doesn't matter. Faculty realize that not all schools have any I/O faculty (mine didn't) and therefore look for a commitment to the research process as opposed to I/O research itself. I think you should absolutely apply this year - your scores are great and you have more than enough experience to get you into a really great program. Just my thoughts.

  2. Hi everyone,

I have been accepted to NYU and Columbia's terminal M.A./S. programs and was wondering if anyone knows anything about these programs...i.e. rank? are students happy? how many students continue to get their Ph.D.? Job placement? etc.

Also, any info about CUNY's I/O psych M.S. would be wonderful.

I have researched these schools on the SIOP website, but aside from student rankings of these programs, there is no addtional info....soooooooo ANY advice is very very welcome!

    Thanks in advance!!

    Jillybean :P

    Hi Jillybean!

I can't really help much with NYU or CUNY, but I visited TC this week and will most likely be pursuing a Soc/Org PhD there this fall! The campus is goregous and the faculty and students were so warm and welcoming.

If you intend to pursue a PhD at some point, I guess I would suggest that you go with TC or CUNY (programs with doctoral programs). This way you can get more involved in research (there were several masters students who were interested in getting PhDs involved in research with faculty at TC) and have a bit of a leg up. I guess you also might think about cost of tuition at the different programs? I don't think anyone really knows about ranking, which kind of makes it easier because you get to just go with fit!

Also, keep in mind TC is Social/Org, not Industrial/Org, so the emphasis is different. In terms of job placement, you can look at the Graduate Survey Reports from the last few years on TC's career services website.

Hope this helped at all! Feel free to let me know if you have any questions about my visit. Good luck!

  3. My thoughts:

    - If you plan on going applied you are really limiting your area of expertise by going to an O dominant program. (I am not completely aware of the expertise you obtain at TC, but if you can come out of a program saying you have expertise in selection, training, job analysis, methods, etc. and you also specialize in leadership and motivation (examples), you have a much more tangible skill set to potential employers). I am not trying to knock O, but as far as direct impacts on organizations O is still very theoretical, whereas I has very real value added.

    - As far as teaching goes, I think everyone is nervous the first time they stand in front of individuals. I myself was thinking how can I be teaching people 2-3 years younger than me....You quickly find out despite the fact you know very little, you know much more than they do. I am an instructor of record for a class out of our area of expertise (social based class) and I am doing just fine. You realize everything you have learned can apply in other areas.

-The cohort thing could be a problem to consider...you will be spending a lot of time with them.

-If I were you and wanted to go applied I would go to George Mason. It carries a ton of prestige in the field and despite the fact you think TC carries with it the university prestige. I/O is a very small field and everyone in it knows GMU is a very good school. Also keep in fact you would most likely be in more debt at TC than at GMU.

    - Keep in mind this is just my opinion, I would strongly suggest you consult with others (perhaps professors in the field, etc.). I hope this helps.

Thanks so much for your advice!

I'm hesitant to say that I would have really different job outlooks coming out of either program, because ultimately I personally don't want to be doing job analyses (or other very I things)as a career. I want to find something more O to do - organizational change/development, conflict resolution, training, diversity, who knows. TC is a really balanced program and it seems like I could find something I really like there. I also assume that some industry jobs are looking for applicants that are from various kinds of organizational fields, not just I/O, so they might not know exactly what academics in the field think in terms of rankings. Do you think that's wrong to assume? I guess I don't really know! I'm coming from an undergrad school with no I /O faculty so I've really just been trying to figure this out on my own. Thanks again for your comments, I really appreciate the input!

  4. Hi guys! I hope the stress is starting to wind down for everyone.

I'm having a bit of a hard time choosing between TC Columbia and George Mason PhD programs, and would really love to hear any of your comments. At this point I think I'm leaning towards TC.

    TC:

    - Best fit for my research interests (I am very O); really felt like I belonged when I visited

    - Only pays for tuition (and not even all of tuition after a few years), with no stipend. You can TA but that only makes 2-3 grand per semester. I have some money saved/am waiting to hear about a few external scholarships/can get a little help from my parents so would only have to take out a small loan if that. Also would have more time in general without having an assistantship/basically being employed there aka more independence

    - NYC is really intimidating but also really exciting

    - Though possibly not as prestigious in the academic field, I intend to do applied work and Columbia carries obvious prestige for trying to get a job.

    - Liked the prospective students for my cohort

    George Mason

    - Good fit for interests

    - Tuition + stipend

    - Not as much a fan of Fairfax, but is close to DC

    - I was really stressed/overwhelmed when I visited, but that could also be because it was my first visit

    - Didn't really jive with the other prospective students for my cohort

    - Requires that you TA and teach your own section of a class your first semester which really really freaks me out

Sorry so long - but so cathartic to write that all out! I welcome any comments and hope everyone winds up where they want to be!

  5. Hello. I still waiting to hear from GA Tech. Worried! - did they email you?

    Thanks. And best luck!

All I know is that I'm "high" on the wait list... I'd imagine it can't be THAT long if they only want two people, right? Not really sure.

I got a call from a potential PI at GaTech several weeks ago, and their visiting weekend is this weekend.

MissRyan - Thanks! If I'm officially accepted I will have to think long and hard about TC. I'd also be completely clueless and overwhelmed (I'm from Texas/Georgia) so I will def be asking for your help!

Lastly, you guys probably already knew this but apparently GW's program moved from the Psych Dept. to the Business School - fyi if that matters to you.

  6. I've been waitlisted at DePaul...anyone have an acceptance?

I'm also wait listed at DePaul. I can't believe they're only accepting two students! I'm not sure I would really want to be in a cohort with only one other person... sounds lonely

Has anyone who interviewed with TC Columbia heard back yet? I really like the program orientation but don't know if I can handle NYC. =(

Also, a spot should be opening up at GaTech soon if anyone is waiting on them!

    Good luck to everyone!

  7. First off - hope this is a great week for everyone!

I'm under the impression that TC Columbia gives pretty minimal funding to students. Has anyone else heard of this/had experience with TC? Looks like they have formal phone interviews February 25th and 26th with faculty members and grad students.

  8. Good advice, I'll certainly do something along those lines. The next 2 weeks should clarify some things for sure so I have a good while before I need to let them know. Never heard the April 15th thing, so that's good to know as well.

I applied to GW and I haven't heard anything yet.

    Found it!!!

    http://www.cgsnet.org/Default.aspx?tabid=201

That's a link to the Council of Graduate Schools site explaining the April 15th deadline. If you open the PDF file it has a list of all of the participants of the resolution. =)

  9. Thanks for the info. I would take a week and half just waiting to hear from other schools (this should be an active week), then take it from there. Sticky situation, but at least you have a little time. Worse case scenario you could bite the bullet and contact the POI's at your first choice schools (assuming you have been in contact with them throughout the application process) and try to find out some info about your status.

I will send good vibes your way!

Congrats! I'm not speaking from personal experience - just from obsessively reading about experiences on here and elsewhere. It is my understanding that they technically have to let you wait until April 15th, but certainly want to pressure you to make a choice as soon as possible so they can continue down their list if need be. Especially because you don't think you're super interested, I'd wait a week at least. If you're still not sure, e-mail and ask them for an extension to be sure you're making the right decision, etc. I think people have done this successfully in the past.

Has anyone heard from TC Columbia, Depaul, or GW? Good luck to everyone this week!

  10. Thanks Fuddy! An hour? Whew...! I was told that mine was going to last thirty minutes. Your advice is great, thanks so much! BTW, what is the 2nd acceptance?? GMU and ?

I was also accepted to Houston, but the interview was with GA Tech. I'm sure they vary a lot in time, etc - just be prepared, have some notes in front of you, and breathe! The best part of mine was when I tried to make a joke (don't do it) and she definitely couldn't tell I was joking and it got really awkward, haha. Things are a little weird on the phone because you don't have visual cues to pick up on when the person is going to speak, how they are reacting to what you say, all that stuff.

Since I/O generally doesn't have a formal interview process, it is probably an informal q&a session like mine was, but that is just my guess! Good luck!

  11. Hooray something I can help with! And hooray for you and your interview!

I've only had one actual phone interview, but I'll tell you what I can. Mine lasted for over an hour (yikes) but I'm sure it varies. She basically told me about what she was working on (and asked me what I thought I'd be interested in of what she described). Be ready to give a little shpeel about your current research and about your future research interests. Definitely have some questions ready for them (atmosphere of the department, requirements, etc).

If they want to spend an hour of their day on the phone with you, they must like you! So relax (or try to, or seem like you are).

    Good luck!

  12. Congratulations, fuddy! GMU was one of my top choices for I/O, but decided to withdraw at the last minute. Who are you aiming to work for at GMU? They always have a strong presence at SIOP...fun group.

Thanks so much for the support yall, I really appreciate it. Dr. Kaplan from GMU was calling to offer me admission (even though I was so prepared for an interview haha)! They won't know about funding packages for a few weeks and they have an accepted students' day on February 26th.

I'm so surprised to hear something so early! Hoorah! =)

  13. If my friends are going to think I'm being "conceited" for sharing a milestone in my life with them in the most efficient way possible...well, you know where I'm going with this. I guess if you happen to know a lot of people applying to the exact same sub-field and schools as you it could be a little annoying, but we all have to deal with worse. My friends and I enjoy supporting each other about our new scary futures, and if we want to do it on a social networking site, so be it! Maybe it's a generational thing?

  14. I'm not sure if there's one specific time that's best if you want to contact professors. Beforehand works of course but I've been told that a note saying you've submitted your application, are interested, and look forward to hearing from them is a good idea. I've also been told that asking questions when you e-mail can seem like you assume they have the time to answer questions from applicants, etc. So yup, definitely a judgment call. I hate when there's no right answers!
