  1. Hey nutmeg good luck on hearing back from them!

What was your interview like? Did they walk you through the department buildings and labs too?

bb9931 do you mean you are joining the Dartmouth MCB program this fall as well? Or is this another program at Darmouth? Welcome to the club, at any rate :)

Yes I am starting MCB in the Fall!!! My email is bb9931@wayne.edu if any of you MCB folk wanna get a hold of me :-P.

  2. Going to Dartmouth MCB!!! Lemme know people who decide to go there, would be nice to talk to the other incoming first years.

Applied: Harvard, BU, Tufts(Sackler Immuno), MIT, WashU, NYU, Columbia, Albert Einstein, Dartmouth, Umiami

    Interviews: Tufts, Umiami, Dartmouth, Einstein

    Attending: DARTMOUTH!!!

  3. Thought I'd update on who I have heard from just in case people want to know where people are interviewing.

Applied: Harvard, BU, Tufts, MIT, Columbia, NYU, Albert Einstein, Umass, Dartmouth, Umiami

Interviews: Tufts, Albert Einstein, Dartmouth, Umiami (first one this week)

    Accepted:???

Reject (BOOO): Harvard, Columbia, Umass, MIT

    No Reply: BU, NYU

  4. Alright I am really nervous. I am applying to graduate school for the first time and havent heard much back yet.

I am wondring if anyone has applied to any of the programs I have and has heard anything

    I have applied to

UMASS- Worcester, Cancer Bio- Rejected via email

University of Arizona, Cancer Biology- They emailed 2.1.10 saying that first interview invites had been sent out and if the 3-4 open seats were not filled that I may still be called upon for an interview. So not extremely hopefull but not a reject yet!!

University of Virginia, Biomedical Medical Sciences- Nothing Yet I heard some people were called on for an interview yes/no?

Albany Medical College, CCBCR- Nothing Yet............

West Virginia University, Biomedical Sciences- Nothing Yet.......

This is such a stressful waiting period!

Wow did anyone get an interview at Umass Worcester Cancer Bio? I was rejected there too...oh well hopefully the Dartmouth interview goes well and I go there :-P.

  5. To bb9931 and other applicants, did you contact professors/PIs at the institutions where you are applying? It is crucial that you communicate with people you might want to work with and let them know that you are excited about their research, give them a brief rundown of how amazing you are, and let them know that you applied or are planning to apply and that you would love to know if they will have an opening in their lab in the Fall (or whatever term you are applying for). This serves to make the professor feel that you are particularly interested in their research and not just applying to the program because of the cachet (or alternatively as a safe school, etc). Make the professors feel flattered and wanted. You LOVE their research and want to work with them and only them...you only applied to the program because of their research that you read about in their papers A and B. Its a dating game. And if some guy came and said how he admired X, Y, and Z accomplishments of mine and thought I was an awesome person and also demonstrated that he had desirable qualities himself (minds out of the gutter now!) and asked if I would go out with him, I very likely would say yes. Flattery works.

I appreciate the sarcasm...clearly blatant flattery is the way to get everything :-P. I did indeed contact various labs, however not all responded and many of the emails were very brief (don't want to annoy). I plan on reading some papers of my interviewers when I actually interview so that I can converse with them about their research etc... I'm hoping to either be at Dartmouth, BU, or Tufts Sackler I think they are probably my top 3 at this point (assuming that I get rejected from Harvard!)

  6. Does anyone know when programs generally let you know if you are accepted or not post interview? My first interview is one of my top choices (18th of Feb), so I was curious if programs typically let you know right away or if they wait awhile before offering acceptances. I'm sure this differs by school, but I'd like to know.

  7. I spoke with someone at NYU CNS today and they said they don't do interview and just send out decisions mid march.

Ah well I contacted Einstein and they interview into March, I spoke to a friend of mine last year and said most programs reply during February, with the fast programs replying in Jan. I have a few interviews so I'm not super paranoid, but it would be nice to hear back from the 5 or so programs that I haven't heard from.

  8. MarA, if I may inquire, when did you hear from Einstein and do you have any idea if they are still sending out invites? Thanks.

Yea I have not yet heard from Einstein or NYU. Einstein's deadline was sometime in January, that might be why they are taking awhile to respond.

  9. BB, I assume you're talking about BU proper and not the Med school? I'm pretty sure Tufts Sackler has 2 interview dates so they might be sending out invites through the first week of Feb.

I meant Boston University Immunology (thru division of grad medical sciences)

  10. Just got rejected from MIT microbiology (in case others applied and wanted to know if they are replying). Still have yet to hear from 6 and very nervous, I REALLY want a BU and or Tufts interview. My partner is moving to the east coast for residency and so far my only interview remotely close to boston is Dartmouth. Hopefully I hear from BU or Tufts soon, I'm thinking Tufts is going to be a rejection but I'm really hoping it isn't.

  11. The graduate school application process is, indeed, very arbitrary. Sure it depends on how strong your application is but luck also plays a huge role in it. It depends on the personality of the members of the admission committee as well as the time and the mood of them when they are reviewing your applications. Therefore, do not get upset if you get rejected - you are not rejected because of a weak application.

Thanks for the reassurance, to be honest Dartmouth is probably in my top 3 so I'd be thrilled to get in hopefully that interview goes well. I'll feel better if I can get at least 2 more east coast, my boyfriend is doing his residency out there and I would prefer to be in the east rather than at Miami (my only other interview).

  12. There are bound to be some negative situations like the ones people are outlining at all schools. Really the only way to know the whole story is to investigate for yourself the programs you are interested in, as you alone know what your level of scrutiny is. I think deciding not to apply to a program solely based on a few others' experiences is setting yourself up for a potentially huge loss.

So I just received a rejection from cancer biology at Umass, after a very exciting 2 days of getting Dartmouth MCB and Umiami. I thought after Dartmouth I'd get a few more interviews, but now I'm kinda worried I sort of thought I'd get an interview at Umass. Is anyone else finding this process rather random? The other 7 schools to which I applied are Columbia, NYU, Einstein, MIT, BU, Tufts, and Harvard. I suppose I hope I manage to get at least 2-4 more interviews, I'm going to be very nervous if I only end up getting 2 and one of them is Dartmouth.

  13. I got my first 2 interviews, MCB at Dartmouth the 18th of Feb and UMiami (sometime after that). Still no word from the other 8 schools, but definitely feeling a little better after the Dartmouth interview, would hope that means I get at least 2 or 3 more interviews so I know I'm going somewhere next year (would hope that means I'll at least get Umass/NYU/Tufts/BU/ or Einstein). Congrats on everyone who heard back this week, looks like this week was a big week for a lot of people. Hopefully next week brings in some more, I'm ecstatic with Dartmouth but obviously I'd like more interviews so that I don't have to worry about not getting in anywhere!

  14. Just heard from Tufts Sackler Immunology via email. On a Saturday!

I too applied Sackler immuno and have not heard anything, or heard anything from anyone for that matter :-(. Hopefully I'm not waiting to get 10 rejections...that would be quite depressing. For the most part, is this relatively early in the interview cycle for most programs?

  15. I know UMASS has at least sent some of the interview e-mails out. With my apps, however, there's still no word from BU or Tufts Sackler.

Yea I'm kinda bummed that I haven't heard from anywhere, but I would imagine most have to interview thru february, and all the stellar people obviously get interviews first. I'm just hoping I make a few school's later interviews and manage to get in...I'm in Michigan at the moment and have always wanted to go to the east coast, I'll be so upset if I don't get into any of them :(.

  16. Yea congrats, Rocafellar is a huge acceptance (my PI went to Harvard for his PhD and I know they were his only rejection when he applied back in the day). Still haven't heard anything good or bad yet :-/.....waiting is a lot more stressful than I thought it would be, it makes you think of all the potential flaws in your application and worry that they will all reject you!

  17. I also applied to the cancer bio program at UMass medical and have not heard anything yet. I have 3 invites so far at Weill Cornell, Dartmouth, and Duke so I am not as panicky about it as I would be if I had no invites

Well aren't you special....I don't have any interviews. Just kidding congratulations, did you apply MCB at Dartmouth? I also applied to Dartmouth but have not heard anything yet although my 3rd letter of recommendation has been delinquent and is apparently submitting mine tomorrow. Congrats on Cornell and Duke, I did not apply to those but those certainly are impressive interviews.

  18. Hi everyone,

I have been watching this thread since it started, but am too shy to post my stats.

The past few days have been very tough 'cuz I have seen many of you getting invites/acceptances. Though my programs are not quite same as yours.

I am hoping ppl applying to the same/similar programs would be willing to share news as well as comments to my applications.

    Research interests:

Computational bio, esp in population genetics and human evolution.

International applicant; currently work as a research associate in a research institute in the States

    Degrees:

BS in CS(GPA: 3.6) and 1st MS in EE(GPA: 3.8) from my country

2nd MS in Computational Bio (GPA: 3.3) from a US-university

    Papers:

    One ISMB poster (2nd author)

One IEEE conf full-paper (1st author, but not in Bio)

One technical report of national science foundation in my country(1st author, awarded, and is related to Bio)

One MS thesis in EE (not going to publish due to a stupid reason, sigh....)

Two papers in Bio are expected to be submitted soon.... though I believe they will not be accepted before the application results are out.

So they would not be that helpful I guess.

    LOR:

well, this part of my application is tricky. only know one of them is excellent.

The other two are unknown. could be ranged from fairly good to neutral I think.

    Applying to:

    Harvard(OEB)

    Berkeley(IB)

    UChicago(Molecular Biosciences)

    Cornell(Tri-I Comp Bio Med)

    Upenn(GCB)

    UCLA(Bioinfo)

    UMich(Bioinfo)

    UCI(MCSB)

    UA(EEB)

    Any comments are welcome!

    Thanks.

I wouldn't worry yet, I haven't heard anything yet (good or bad) and I applied to 10 programs. I'm also a U.S. citizen...so if we are supposed to hear earlier than you I haven't heard anything :-P. Good luck, I'm sure most of us are more worried about things than we should be (Although my GRE wasn't great, so I might be worried for a good reason if it makes a big difference).

  19. So I haven't heard anything yet :( suppose I have no rejections so that's a good sign but I'm really nervous. I applied to a lot of reach schools, but there were a few on my list that I really thought I'd at least get interviews at. I applied 10. Graduating undergrad in 3 years, honors biology degree with thesis research (no publications at the moment). I have a 3.69/4.00 GPA, and my GRE was 510 V and 700 Q. I know this is not phenomenal, but I'm hoping its enough to at least get interviews. Here is what I applied.

    Umass Worcester GSBS (Cancer)

    Sackler Tufts Immuno

    Boston University Medical Sciences (Immuno)

Harvard (Biomedical sciences thru med school)

    MIT (Microbiology)

    NYU (Sackler Molecular Onc/Immuno)

    WashU (DBBS)

Umiami Miller School of Med (cancer)

    Dartmouth (MCB)

    Columbia (molecular pathogenesis)

Anyone got interviews at these specific programs yet? I'm really nervous that I haven't heard anything :(
